Doormat Reccomendations for Fine Dirt

Bit of a weird one but I have recently moved into a new house which has an office that was built onto it.

This means that I need to open doors and head down steps to outside before going back into the office. Continually doing this while WFH (several times a day) brings dirt in from outside. There is a garden nearby and wind/rain push leaves/dirt down to the front of the office which is concreted. It isn't a lot but enough that the simple doormat I have isn't cutting it. I am hoping someone knows of a more effective doormat that will collect all the small dirt/debris before going in.

I was thinking of getting one of those velvety bathmats that are very soft and thin on-top, which might grab all the dirt for me possibly? Just when/if it gets wet I will need to hang it up.

Coir mat (catches dirt, drops through - needs to be outside), then a carpet mat inside then shoes off to house shoes/slippers

    • 2 years living with renovations 🤷‍♀️

Please tell me you don't wear outside shoes inside

  • I am going from inside to outside for 1/2 steps then back inside. It is over concrete is where I am getting the dirt. I don't want to put shoes on just for 1/2 steps then back off again. Would rather have bare feet and clean them on the doormat before heading into the office.

growing up very westernised, but in an asian household i was always like…why can everyone else wear shoes in the house smh

now as an adult, trying to raise my kids with an appreciation for both cultures - I GET IT.

I recently watched Hereditary for the first time. Teen is in bed and pulls blanket off to get out of bed…wearing shoes. That's the real horror, as an Asian.

I’m WASP but the first thing I do when I go inside a home is take off my shoes wherever we go. It has nothing to do with cleanliness I just prefer to not wear shoes. I have no issues with people wearing shoes inside my house if they want as long as they wipe their feet.

Have you considered buying a pair of $2 thongs?

    • Any doormat that can take all the dirt from your feet is also going to be taking off a layer of skin.

Think about it, when was the last time you were able to brush all the fine dust off something? I generally wash anything covered with fine dust to clean it, because it just sticks to everything. Even when sweeping if there's any moisture it'll no longer work. Feet and shoes are covered with little crevices to catch it all, you'd need to take at any shoes with a stiff brush to get it off (which again, don't want to put your feet through).

Getting into the crevices of your shoes would take a hell of a door mat, they're only designed to take the surface dirt off.

We use our Crocs for outdoor shoes. They are easy to slip on and off when traversing between inside and outside. They are plastic so they are weather resistant and easy to clean. You can get knock off ones cheap from ALDI.

If you have a Costco membership then have a trundle down to the Warehouse. They have a few mats there designed to trap dirt as you walk in. The beauty is if they don’t work you take them back.

    Best of luck.

  • You could try a cat litter mat - https://www.petcircle.com.au/product/m-pets-rectangular-cat-… - these trap just about everything.

Yeah get some sandals you can easily slip on and off when using those stairs. And if you aren't already, then stop wearing outside shoes inside. If dust inside from feet is already a big problem then you probably shouldn't be stomping around the house in outside shoes. These soft doormats might make more sense inside the doors, for you to step into and take the sandals off, if leaving the sandals outside would get them wet and muddy. Keep using the rough mat outside and the soft mat to step onto and put the sandals on.

  • Not cheap, but look at a Muck Mat. They look like artificial grass, but work really well. Anaconda have them.

  • I'll try and upload a picture later today, but once again for everyone saying to get outside shoes or take my shoes off. I am not putting shoes on for 1 or 2 steps then taking them off. I'm also barefoot and not wearing any shoes in either spot

    • Added pic of the area why I don't want to put shoes on and off
