Absolutely criminal. This stuff is junk.

      • I've used a set for a while and I wouldn't say they're junk.

not the best, but definitely not as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

        • Would you say they’re worth the claimed $850 RRP? Or even the “sale” price of $300?

        • Its more that they are overpriced and marketing driven.

300 is alot of money. I would not be paying that. Ive bought numerous sets of Global Ikasu (for presents) for under 300 in the past.

          • @PCHammond: Nah my question was directed to alitadark who seems to think they don’t deserve the criticism they are copping

Who needs seven knives? Get 1-2 Victorinox knives and move on.

  • +7

For $300, I prefer 1 really good knife over 7 bad knives but might just be me.

  • Only 64% off???

    • +1

if you see 90% off, please post a deal

Don't waste time & money on dogshit Baccarat landfill…spend $30 more and you can have the Global Ikasu 7 piece set. Similarly priced at online kitchen stores. The free cookware set isn't worth it.

    • +1

$299 if you have ebay plus.

      • +1

Don’t waste your money on this knife block set either. Just buy the knives you need.

        • +4

Don't waste money on knives, just sharpen a stick!

    • +1

Agreed. If you must buy a knife block (which you shouldn’t) this is infinitely better than Baccarat

i got free knives from coles. ask @jv

    • Same, i got the whole set…

I prefer my WÜSTHOF set though…

  • I always wonder how much should you spend on one chef knife.

    • $20 max

    • +2

      Free from Coles.

      Kiwi knives about $5 each

      • +3

Yep to Kiwi. I have a Global and Kiwi chefs knife and almost exclusively always gravitate to the Kiwi one

      • Yes!

But mine cost about $10 from Minh Phat (Abbotsford, Vic). I've bought several for children (adult version) & friends - always the type that looks halfway between a French chef knife and a lightweight Chinese cleaver.

Very sharp. Hard on cutting boards! At a price that you can discard if it becomes too dull (or gets bent) - proper sharpening costs more than the knife!

Like @Lucille Bluth, my normal alternate knife when I need a little more heft is a Global G2 - just works.

  • You are better of buying a global set when on sale for similar price, Baccarat and their fake RRP 90% off bs junk

Got knives from chinse shop, it cost me $10 per pc and it still doing well after 20 years ++

  • +1

    Junk knives, laughably fake RRP

  • I recall getting these for $149 in 2017, seem fine as long as you keep them sharp they do the trick not sure what the grief is about?

I recall rrp was $199. Not sure what the value of the "free" cookware set is?

It's mainly the lengths they go to in trying to deceive and manipulate. The description sounds like it was written by a real estate agent. In my opinion it crosses the line into deception and I really wish the ACCC take these con artists to task on the claimed savings. They probably listed it at full price for a few weeks, perhaps even conned a few people into paying full price, so they can claim these ridiculous discounts.

Baccarat® Damashiro™ knives have been crafted from the finest Japanese Steel 420J2 and ice-hardened ensuring superior blade strength and durability. The Damashiro™ range features distinctive Damascus inspired blades inspired by traditional Japanese craftsman and Samurai sword makers. Characteristic of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water.

The Damashiro™ Japanese Steel has been mined in the same Japanese region of Chuo-Ku Chiba since the middle of the last century. Each knife in the Damashiro™ range has been engineered and tested to meet Rockwell 53 specification guaranteeing the blades hardness, and optimum performance.

      • 420J2 is a low grade knife steel by all accounts (from people more knowledgeable in steel than me)
      • 53 HRC is soft for a knife steel compared to what is offered by reputable knife brands
      • These are made in China, but they make a big deal about the iron being dug out of the ground in Japan (because you can't mine steel)
      • Made up Japanese name… don't think Damashiro even means anything in Japanese
      • Constant reminders that it is "Japanese Steel" which I find really distasteful
      • Ridiculous RRP, condolences to anyone who paid it thinking they were getting a $800 knife set
      • What do you think its a fair price for these considering these points?

        • +2

Many years ago I bought a 7 piece Baccarat set for $64 (1.1446 steel, 55 HRC). It served its purpose. While it doesn't hold an edge that well, it can put up with some abuse. Still got it, but I prefer to use my VG10 knives.

And of course, the current price is 75% off the absurd $600 RRP.

    • Just checked my email - bought the same set in 2018 for $199, then found a coupon the day after bringing them down to $169.

  • No, no, no, no, no…

  • This band and price is not a bargain
