Is it me or does this fragrance smell strength has been watered down compared to a decade ago? I used to put this on and it would remain for half a day. Now it barely stays for an hour

    • +2

It’s true it’s been happening with many other ones too

    • +3

Perhaps you were getting Parfum's a decade ago, and now Tolilette's?
IMHO, toilette's are a waste, for this reason.

      • No. I always got toilette. That I’m sure. I knew the difference back then :p

Try a Joop! Homme EDT and you'll see that it's quite strong without being a perfume.

I recently bought a different fragrance for my SO which I remember from 10 or more years ago when it was discontinued.
I was super disappointed to find it smelt much weaker, lasts a lot less time and had a slightly different note than my memory.

Speaking to the lady at the chemist about it, she suggested the Eau De Toilette sprays are the 'gentler' fragrances, the parfum ones are the stronger ones - and as I'd purchased a Eau De Toilette fragrance perhaps I should seek out a Parfum version of the same fragrance.
I havent found a Parfum version of the fragrance for my SO yet but I'll be keeping my eyes out.

Regarding the Hugo Boss fragrance though, I personally wear this myself and I notice this fragrance has this version (EDT) and there is also a Parfum variant.
I think I'll take a trip into a store and spray a couple of cards and carry them around with me for a day and see if the parfum does last longer and smell better than the EDT variant over time.

      • Some parfum versions smell like a stronger EDT but for Boss Bottled, the parfum version smells totally different to the EDT.

        • Ahhh see I was afraid of this, thanks for the insight

        • Yes. Agree. It’s like a totally different smell

    • Is it me or does this fragrance smell strength has been watered down compared to a decade ago?

I have a bottle from about 2017 and it was still piss weak then too. I generally avoid EDTs like the plague because almost all of them have no longevity these days.

If you use fragrances a lot, you become desensitised to them over time.

My wife insists her perfume has less fragrance than before and that she can barely smell it, but it’s still just as strong, I can smell it from the other end of the house, and my eyes start watering if she comes anywhere near me within an hour of applying it.

Take a break from fragrances for a few months, and even the fragrance of your laundry detergent and shampoo will start seeming overpowering.

      • I thought of that too. I don’t think that it’s that. I don’t use them that often. I also don’t think I’ve lost my sense of smell as I’ve heard this from many people. The other test was longevity for me. 20 to 10 years ago when I put one of these on I could smell it until afternoon. Now I can’t smell the perfume after an hour. That’s a massive difference.
I’ve moved to oil based perfumes. But also, there are some stores that make you an almost identical perfume if you take a bottle to them. I’ve heard good things about them as they make the fragrance strong. I’m yet to test it but I’ll definitely come back and report

      • Yeah, I always read about people complaining how their fragrances don't last, but that's because after a short while our olfactory system adjusts and we just don't notice the scent anymore, a bit like spending too much time in a loo and you stop smelling it.

      • Take a break from fragrances for a few months, and even the fragrance of your laundry detergent and shampoo will start seeming overpowering.

Nah dude, it's just the great ensh!ttening of consumer products that has gone into overdrive since 2020 because every manufacturer is trying to cut corners and produce the same product with less raw materials.

Many of the flowers, spices, herbs, oils and aromatic ingredients that go into perfumes are quite expensive to source and can be in shorty supply, so perfume brands like every other manufacturer of consumer goods are trying to maximise profit at the expense of everything else these days hence why there has been a notable and well-reported trend of perfumes simply not smelling as strong or as good as they used to in decades past.

Also, due to various environmental/health & safety/sustainability legislation that has been passed in Western countries in the past 3 decades, perfumes have undergone significant scrutiny from a toxicity/allergen/dermatological/respiratory/environmental impact perspective and their manufacturers have to comply with restrictions/limitations on the amount of various raw ingredients that can be added to them, to reduce the potential for them to cause irritation/reactions in broadest possible demographic as well as to reduce their environmental impacts. Notably, a lot of formerly animal-based ingredients in perfumes have been banned or strictly regulated so they've been replaced with plant-based alternatives which simply aren't as potent in a fragrance.

      I've got this one, it's a classic.

These things are for beta, gamma, delta, and fake alpha men.
Real Alpha men do not need any of them.

  • Bought one from Chemist Warehouse last time, but the fragrance didn’t last long. I’m skeptical about this now—not sure if it was an older batch or if the fragrance has been diluted in general

  • Has anyone found any long lasting perfume? (price <300)

  • -4

These are great for women also. There is no such thing as a perfume for men vs women vs other. All the same. Some smell nice.

    • -1

        Anything else is a fake/fraud/Foney.
