Worst spot to put your phone

    • +5

I find it easier just to sticky tape my phone on the window above the steering wheel, that way I never miss a notification…

    • +2

The cup holder in the photo is a bad spot for it, too low, but cars have cup holders in different positions and many will be fine.

Our Tarago would probably be ok, they’re pretty high up and part of the centre dash. Our previous Xtrail had cup holders on top of the dash itself so using those would be really good, really.

Of course you lose the use of a cup holder in the process but.

I saw this yesterday. I bought one a few months ago and it works really well. No need to block the ventilation hole anymore.

    • +1

Good idea, ill buy one too. Blocking the ventilation gets in the way of the wind.

    • +3

Ventilation hole is the best spot while wireless charging though.

Yep keeps the phone cool when the AC is on. Great for those who need to have GPS working for long periods in direct sunlight while driving.

  • It has "so shake"

    • the 'classy me' got one.

  • Thanks OP, got a couple!

  • +3

Will this look like the phone is on your lap, if captured by those mobile phone cameras

    • +3

Where the hell are your cupholders?

      • In my car the cup holders are right by my left thigh.
Even the appearance of a phone 'resting' on your thigh = immediate fine!

        • +1

Like most vehicles, but unless you rest your left leg over the centre console in some weird position, I think you should be golden, but if not, you can always contest the fine.

    sigh

    obligatory -

    lisan al gaib!

    • Oh great - thanks for the reminder

I've been meaning to re-read Dune
First read in analog in the mid 60s and re-read several times since
I get something new out of each re-read, as well as nostalgic memories.

    This feels illegal

  • +5

been looking at phone mounts recently and theyre surprisingly expensive for simple plastic components

  • +1

I don’t imagine NSW police highway patrol would be okay with these. Definitely suggest a different spot, plus this is such an awkward placement anyways.

  • +1

How do you not get done by mobile detection cameras with these?

  • Thanks, will give it a whirl!

  • +3

very dangrous to look down i almost had an accident with these

  • Hopefully this reaches high enough and turns to landscape so that I can watch with one eye whilst keeping the other eye on the road!

  • This works well on those old fashioned recliner sets with the cup holders.

    Cup holder cell phone holders:

Cup holder cell phone mounts exemplify that hands-free alternatives may not completely alleviate the distraction posed by cell phones during driving. These mounts, positioned lower than other phone holders, may necessitate drivers to divert their attention from the road when checking directions. Despite their hands-free design, cup holder mounts underscore the ongoing challenge of mitigating distractions while driving. Their lower placement can inadvertently lead to moments of reduced focus on the road.

Just what I need for my treadmill cup holder. Thanks.

This would be so good to use to reply to texts while YouTubing, using my Event Cinema discount tickets on opening day of the next blockbuster movie.

There game been a few questions about legality so I did a search.

    NSW
    Drivers with a full licence
There are only 2 ways you can use a mobile phone while driving:

Hands-free – you can only use your phone hands-free (without touching it) to:
    make or receive voice calls
play audio, for example, music and podcasts.
In a phone holder – you can only use and touch your phone to:
    make or receive voice calls
play audio, for example, music and podcasts
use as a driver’s aid, for example, maps and navigation apps or dispatch systems.
Phone holders must be commercially manufactured and fixed to your vehicle and must not obscure your vision.

You must not use a mobile phone while driving for any other function. This includes:

    texting
    video calls
    emailing
    social media
    using the internet
    photography.
When driving, you must not hold a mobile phone in your hand. It must not rest on your leg, be between your shoulder and ear or any other part of your body.

    Vic

Rules for mounted devices (mobile phones and tablets) and inbuilt navigation and entertainment systems

For mobile phones and tablets, the mounting must be commercially designed and manufactured for that purpose, and the device must be secured in the mounting.

As a general rule, drivers can use their mounted or inbuilt systems for functions such as music and navigation, provided they are not entering text, scrolling or viewing images or video. However, drivers can use voice controls for music and navigation.

When driving (except when parked), you must not:

Enter information, text, numbers or symbols
Scroll on the device (such as scrolling through texts messages, social media, music etc.)
    Use the device for:
Reading or writing text messages, emails, message threads or viewing websites
Watching movies, TV, video games or other moving images
    Viewing social media and photos
    Video calls.
If a passenger, you must not use the device if it is likely to distract the driver.
You can however, touch the device briefly to:

initiate, accept or reject an audio call
    play or stream audio material
    adjust volume levels
use a function on the device designed to assist you to operate the vehicle
    use a navigation function
use a function on the device designed to monitor a driver’s behaviour or condition, or
carry out a professional driving task

  • But in Vic it has to be in a certain spot or you'll get fined, on the window can anyone confirm?

  • Mine is loose on the cup holder. I am returning it.
