Doorbell PoE Ethernet Wiring Cavity Wall Question

Building a new house and want to put Ethernet to the doorbell, that small bit of wall next to the door and run an Ethernet cable through the gap in the double brick wall to the roof space.

In my old house 2019 build for some reason they plastered this gap on the top of the double brick wall in the roof space so you couldn’t do it. However I found out this is uncommon? My builder said they very likely won’t do it but didn’t guarantee it. The builder won’t put the Ethernet in themselves as it has to connect to like an intercom or something and they charge a ludicrous amount to do it anyway.

My question was do builders normally leave this cavity wall gap in the roof space open? Or do they seal it off? Is this a regulation? Any suggestions of alternative ways to install if they seal it off? I’m in Western Australia fyi

put in conduit, we did that when we built our house.
Even if we didn't use it, the cost of doing it post build is just not worth it.

Oh and if you do put conduit in, as part of handover make sure the conduit is clear - we had frames in the way, plaster in the pipe, even screws through two of them.

    • They said they wouldn’t even put conduit in for some reason

      • rule number one when dealing with builders - don't accept the first or second answer.
rule number two - they will overcharge for things they don't want to do.

Don't take no for an answer, you want conduit then they should put in conduit. Make it clear they are not running the cables or anything so there is no rules being broken.

This is because ACMA is a toothless tiger in the face of big corporates and media, but is a fearless persecutor towards the common people. Whirlpool prohibits discussions on Ethernet cabling because ACMA sent them a threatening letter.

Your builder is correct. Australian law requires permanent concealed Ethernet cabling (as opposed to temporary cabling that you leave strewn on the floor or taped to the wall) must be installed by a licensed cabler. Running an Ethernet cable through the gap in the double brick wall to the roof space is a type of permanent concealed installation that your builder is probably unlicensed to do.

    • That's really interesting and I had no idea. Bunnings has signs in the plumbing and electrical areas about trades must install. But nothing near the Ethernet/ cables

    Is this a regulation?

  • whose your builder?
clarendon does point2point ethernet for $155 each

in our new house all ethernets go to a single point in the house where ill have all the equipment

    • They do Ethernet ports to a point just not the doorbell one because it would have a hole on the outside I think. I have other Ethernet ports also to a point. Status residential.

      • Clarendon will leave a hanging and crimped cable for me to install the doorbell

        • Oh that’s pretty good, i wish my builder would do that

  • Any good actual doorbells though that work with HomeKit natively?

    I'm sick of Ring

    • The aqara g410 is coming out in the next few months, it fixes the main issues with the g400 doorbell which are the orientation and the night vision, it also adds a mmWave sensor for automations which is nice.
