What Are Some Cheap Gym Membership Options?

My anytime fitness company membership just expired and I received notice that they are upping the rates from $15.16 to $23.95. I called them but the max discount they are willing to offer is 20% which doesn't bring it down by much. I'm thinking of going back to Crunch fitness as that was the gym I used to go before AF.

Does anyone know if there are any gym memberships deals at the moment or any gyms that have cheap memberships?

Is that a week? So $1152 pa?

Have you investigated gyms at places like universities, community centres, Council operated, physio, rehab gyms etc? Some of these, because of their focus, more easily fall into the claims categories with Extras (depending on your cover etc)

  • location?

See plenty of ads here in qld for planet fitness. $10 a week or somthing like that.

    • $5 a week for basic membership.

      • Omg so cheap

Consider going to lower socio economic area to sign up, but get membership that lets you visit other branches. At least that worked for me and jetts and good life back in the day. I set up a home gym after lockdowns round 1 COVID and haven’t looked back. I do not miss the literal freaking zoo during peak hour times.

That generally doesn't work nowadays as a lot of those chain gyms will transfer your "home gym" to that location if you go there more than the gym you initially signed up.
Seen that in the clauses for Plus Fitness/Anytime etc.

      i.e from plus fitness:

8.2 You also acknowledge that if you use a club that is not your Home Club on an ongoing and frequent basis your membership agreement may be transferred to the club you use most frequently and the Membership Fees payable at that club will apply.

      • Dang , in that case I change my vote to ‘set up home gym, pending space requirements.’

  • Derrimut have the following sale at the moment but they have sales all the time

    • Single Sign-Up: $239 for 12 months (no joining fee)

    • Sign Up with a Friend:
$199 each for 12 months (no joining fee)

But they can get really overcrowded during peak hours.

    • they seem to have some strong financial backers - but will they still be there in years to come ???

  • Revo are $10/month, although they don’t have much in Syd if that’s where you are

Fitness passport if your place of employment offers it. $1710 p/wk in Syd and I cn use at a heap of gyms and pools throughout NSW. I beleive they have also just started offering in other states and you can add the different states in wk blocks if youre travelling

    • $1710 per week??

      • +1

If you have to ask it means you can’t afford it, just like me

      • +1

        missing decimal point, $17.10

Not only do the staff load the weights onto the bar, they also lift them for you as well. The sauna comes with a personal masseuse and the treadmill does the running for you.

Just be like this dude and consider committing fraud

    • In this gym, someone’s always behind you, even when you don’t need a spotter.

    • Free food too

    $15.16 to $23.95 a month isn't too bad even with a 20% increase.

    • quotes as to these prices ????

even back in early 2000's … $23.95/month was almost unheard of (that was roughly the price I paid for council gym membership).
but then … we are now 20+ years on from that - nah … I can't believe that for 2025 +++ prob a private gym ???

      weekly cost now maybe ???

    • +1

This will be weekly my AF did the same thing recently and they only quote weekly price to make it seem cheaper

council run/owned gyms == worth considering.
back in the day - I did alot of training at 2x council gyms (+ some private gyms) … end of day == roughly the same you get out of them.
+++ much the same equipment …

main difference == having to work up convo - to get a "spotter" - a workout buddy..
whereas private gyms - the more expensive type - there "should be" staff walking around offering to spot you - if needed.

Also - my local WAFL footy team - for many years has opened their gym up to general public (at reduced cost).
Both of which == far far cheaper than "private run" gyms.

I have been going to my council aquatic centre gym for about 8 years. Last year at the end of February they did a 30% off membership sale a month before my renewal so I rejoined and just continued on when the previous year expired, it cost $682.45 for unlimited peak pool, gym, and fitness classes access for 12 months. The gym weight machine equipment was all new in mid 2017, the cardio equipment is regularly updated, but some of the weight lifting equipment is starting to show wear and tear and probably should be replaced over the next few years. It’s hard to beat that price though.

    • Council gyms are super good. Lots of extras (spa room / sauna etc) I found

  • What do you want to do at the gym? Is a home gym and in particular bodyweight exercises going to work for you. You dont need much space, if you have a garage of any size then that is enough and with bodyweight you hardly have any equipment so can pack it away and move the car back in.

If you do have spare space and are doing resistance then a squat rack, bench and something that allows for pull ups (plus barbells and weights of course) will cover you for pretty much everything for 1 to 2 years of gym membership costs (or less if you hunt 2nd hand)

However that obviously depends on what you will use the gym for, whether you have space, when you will use it and whether you will have the motivation to use a home gym.
