  Does anyone know if this is a follow on to the original RPG Maker and RM2K from the early 2000s?

    Yeah this is basically a follow up from RM2k. Although, this one is a direct improvement on RPG Maker VX which had severe limitations. The key difference to this one and older ones is scripting. This has RGSS3 support, which is Ruby 1.8.1+, so a lot of better features comparing to XP and VX. I think RM2K had no scripting support (can't recall if that's true though). But there are still lots of resources available for this engine and lots of great code available.

    My first recommendation is to download First Seed Material's resource pack to use the better looking two-tiled characters and graphics. You can download from here
