Musashi High Protein or Plant Protein or Shred & Burn Assorted Flavours 2kg $70.19 + Del ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Chemist Warehouse

130

Saw this yesterday and bought the 2 kgs high protein chocklate… it’s $46 off…
https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/91354/musashi-high-p…

And same with 900 grams protein flavours too, $26 off and the price is $39… it’s similar to the 50% off deal Cole’s had long back. But I don’t see any deals elsewhere…

I found this to be a ban for the buck… also the 100% whey is similar price or offs…

All products you can see below the off price

EDIT: I just saw HealthyLife website also offers same price but I found chemist warehouse accessible near home

And you can use code FURTHER10 if you buy 2 x 2kg, bringing the price down to for $116.40, which is less than $30/kg.

    • Ingredients include Guar Gum, Sucralose, skim milk powder. Cheap but nasty.

From my unscientific 10 minutes of research, the Whey variety has more protein content and is also better value(more serves per tub).

It's a bit dodgy their listing description touts the benefits of WPI protein but in the ingredients list of the item, they use a blend(of the inferior WPC along with WPI and don't mention the exact composition)

Also, combine this with the CBA Yello offer for an additional $15 saving

    • In truth there's no advantage to isolate over whey, so the real deception it continuing its hype by capitalising on its brand.

WPC is a sensible option. They even include some digestive enzymes to help the small minority who notice the difference between concentrate and isolate in their bowels.

      • +5

Not having a go at you or saying you're wrong, but one useful thing about WPI is it's very low lactose. I'm lactose intolerant but can have WPI.
Just commenting in case anyone else is in a similar situation.
        WPC gives me…… Issues….. WPI doesn't.

      • It's isolate vs concentrate, they are both whey.
WPI is always preferred unless something has changed (not that I have whey at all and prefer plant power).

Also look up casein, not very healthy.

        • Casein is fine.

          Concentrate is fine.

The cost difference is quite high for isolate, so it doesn't meet the standard for "worth it" for most people.

          • @Wolfenstein98k: But is it? Casein: a milk protein with diverse biologic consequences (pubmed)

It's up to the individual to decide but a blanket statement like that doesn't mean anything. Just like bovine dairy is fine. There is more to just bulking up.

Yeah you have to compare the protein grams/kg dollar value. Most gym junkies overdo it and you can only absorb so much protein anyway. I aim for 0.8 -1.2g per kg. Excess just puts strain on the liver/kidneys. There's also a 24h window after working out for muscle repair, as long as you don't get hungry. No real need to chug the powder down in at the water cooler in the gym but funny to watch.

It's easy to get all your protein requirement from real food, but I can see it's a motivational and convenience thing (still got some protein powder myself sitting there). Just funny people scoffing so much chicken, tuna and meat and still need protein powder.

            • @G-rig: "Not very healthy" is a blanket statement not supported by evidence. "Fine", meanwhile, is.

The "can only absorb so much" protein thing is somewhat a myth. Recent research ha supported that you should aim for something like 1g/lb of LEAN body mass, not just total.

On top of that, it's better spread out than in giant doses, but overall protein intake does matter for synthesis.

I'm a skinny dude so I use powder to help me without having to eat horrible bodybuilder meals like you listed haha, especially because I have to be inclusive of a toddler when I cook.

              • +1

@Wolfenstein98k: True, 'fine' is an opionion, but i'll give that - 'not very' isn't well defined either.

The point is excess protein calories will still go to fat or overall cal intake, or sit in your colon rotting.

Yes there is no doubt protein powder is convenient, still got some tubs in the cupboard of musashi plant when it was 54$ / 2kg from CW ages ago.

Agree, you do get tired of eating so much meat and food after a while so adding powder to fruit smoothies is great.
It's just the whole protein (Brotein) talk in general ha.

Yes calories in/out is the best place to start before worrying too much about macros. I think we both know what to do :)

    • Can usually work out the different whey composition by protein content

  • +13

Don't buy "High Protein", buy "100% Whey".

The latter is basically a pure protein powder, the former has dextrose (essentially pure sugar, glucose), whole milk powder, etc and just uses larger serving sizes to make up for the shortfall in protein.

13% less protein and twice the carbs.

Still waiting patiently for Amino Z's next special…

      Me too

    • +1

best flavours for amino z ?

    • USA WPI no bueno.

  • I’m looking for a hydrolysed wpi with digestive enzymes and not a whole heap of fillers and stuff haha

  • only 66% protein

  • Any thoughts on Sucralose as the sweetner against other brands using Stevia?

    • Probably no consequence. Current scientific consensus is that there's insufficient evidence of any harm.

One single dose can create lasting insulin response changes, more so than sugar, but substantially more so when in combination with sugar. The new Fanta and Sprite etc all using this combination. It's like sprinting towards pre-diabetes.

      • Sugar is better and natural, people love sugar free and chemicals though, mostly sedentary folk scared of activity.

        • I am yet to see a healthy person drinking diet/sugar free soda in my lifetime.

I’ll have a can of Kirks maybe once a month.

          • @ghee: The fatties like it, and those with sugar/carbs phobia.

Agree, just drink water, or soda water from a Sodastream or the real thing if you are an active person.

  • 50% off Musashi (and other protein powders) at Woolies starting tomorrow — cheaper than Chemist Warehouse, e.g., High Protein 900g $32.50 (vs $39 at CWH).

Not bad from your local Woolies at $1.63 per 30g protein (18.4g per dollar). The 2kg High Protein for $70.19 at CWH works out only slightly better at (18.8g per dollar)

    Regular prices from BN:
    WPC: 18.9g protein per dollar
    WPI: 17.6g protein per dollar

    • get 100% Whey from CW and add your own dextrose if you need sugar. Better value than High Protein…
Or wait for INC WPI discount

      • It says a lot about Musashi (others too?) that you have to take 50% off before matching Bulk Nutrients pricing!

        Things I like about BN:

        1. Tested at gov / uni labs for purity and content, results published online, e.g., WPI
        2. 100% Aussie-owned
        3. Whey from grass-fed cows in AU, NZ, USA — TIL grass-fed makes a real difference
        4. No need to wait for a sale, they're always ~50% off Musashi regular prices

Thing I don't like as much about BN:

        • no free shipping, even when ordering a largeish quantity ($9 flat rate)
        • no sales (guess no strong reason when they're already half the price of others)
      • WPI usually more concentrated, pretty easy to just add stuff as you say for more cals (bulking etc).

Just eat banana as well or something.

        • +2

yep. and WPI unflavored is even better. Always can add cocoa, Milo or something without paying for it "protein tax"

          • @VQLD: Where are y'all finding decent WPI these days? Seems there is some cartel pricing going on, or foreign buyers buying it all up. Fonterra NZ-WPI seems to be non existent and even Oz-WPI hard to come by (for a decent price). Saputo seem to be selling everything to one buyer…

Not about to start buying USA/Mexico WPI (be very wary there are a ton of online re-seller grifters who claim to be selling NZ-WPI but are actually shipping out USA/Mexico WPI. Have experienced this from Pure Product WPI eBay/Amazon. American WPI comes from unregulated dairy fed GMO corn/soy/glyphosate/chems/waste.

Also FYI there is a seller "Good Stuff Mate" on eBay that is marketing Organic Australian WPI but in fact he/she is sending out NHWP (absolute dairy dross $1/kg that is primarily lactose and salt and a little bit of protein). So heaps of fake/mislabeled stuff out there atm.
