Cancelling Prime with a Refund

Hi OZB,

I've been thinking about cancelling my Prime membership lately. The word is there is no refund, like any sub, you keep the benefit until it runs out, so the cancellation is just an off button for the auto-renewal. Then I came across this thread on reddit. Mine is until April and I haven't bought anything interesting lately, and none of my shipments arrived overnight anyway. Originally, I got it for the warehouse deals, then I liked the streaming, until I realise the app absolutely does not work on Windows — always black empty space with titles that you cannot click because the link is attached to the image that won't load… I think the pros of ending it are I won't be spreading my attention between random episodes of Frasier and doing actual work, and impulse buying crap that I have to post to fb marketplace to get rid of later on.

How's your Prime journey so far?

Amazon price marches major retailer,s pretty much the soonest any of them doing specials. Thus is very hard not to buy from Amazon. Sometimes it has the added subscribe and save discount and again 3% discounted gift card and free shipping. Returning anything is also super easy.

  • Prime delivery is borked these last couple of months for some of us anyway. I'm hoping they sort their shit out. I'm ordering toilet paper and getting notifications that Australia Post is bringing it, what the heck is even going on.

Bezos needs to start paying their people more so they can hire more of them, even if it means raising the price of Prime in Australia. Prime in the US is 139 USD, or 226.09 AUD per year. Yet we pay just 79 AUD a year, and we used to pay even less than that. After relying on next day delivery for years it sucks that suddenly Prime items are taking weeks to arrive.

Who on Earth buys toilet paper a month in advance, you order things when you notice you're running low and maybe only have a few days supply left. Suddenly I'm driving to the shop every other day like a cave man for all sorts of things I used to take for granted as showing up in two days max with Prime. And there's no communication from Amazon about what's going on, no email explaining the situation and updates on what to expect.

Anyway have you looked at Prime Video. That's worth $79 a year alone imo.

Why wouldn't you buy your toiletries in advance? We have cupboards..

We have all toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing detergent, washing powder, soap, shampoo and conditioner, floss, toothpaste, mouthwash, spray and wipe, windex, garbage bags (etc) set to come monthly/bi-monthly at rates that deliver slightly more than we use during the period. That way I only need to occasionally skip a delivery when we've been delivered too much and other than that never have to worry about any of those things - and always have a spare handy if there are any hiccups. Leaves plenty of headspace for worrying about everything else.

      • I like to get the specials, will change brand if one I like is even cheaper when I go to order more.

    • I’ve never waited longer than 2 days for the regular toilet paper and paper towel deals that come on here, must be your area.

In saying that, in no world would I pay $230 a year for prime, for the $79 value I believe that is about right.

Maybe if you live in the middle of nowhere you can pay a higher fee for the convenience of next day delivery, but that’s not something everyone should have to pay. Also if it takes weeks to get a delivery from auspost this is an issue with your area and I would suggest you be better prepared and have stock on hand.

Prime is definitely worth it at my house. Ebay plus has gone. Not even worth the last offer of $19.

    • Yep where has the $4 annual ebay deals gone

      • same place as the -$1 one?
        .

  • I had 5 deliveries so far this year. So 1 a week.
That includes on from Amazon UK with free shipping.
Plus watching The Devil's Hour currently. Never had any problem with the app.
    So it's working for me.

  • I don’t sub yearly but I thought if you cancelled early they refund you the rest of the year?

    they don’t do that anymore?

    • Not in my case. After some consideration, I cancelled it. Just an off button for auto-renewal.
