In terms of my flying experience…

Air Asia < Scoot < Singapore

However, in most cases one can look past the type of airplane and amenities. Where the difference really comes in is the layovers and waiting time etc.

  • +2

why is it so cheap? is there a catch?

    • +17

The catch is that each way is 27 hours instead of 10 hours.

You can't even sell the idea of a layover because its too short. Instead you get it cheaper in exchange for being tired and jetlagged.

      • is it possible to take break of a day or two to make it better?

        • In my expierience no. But you can always search around for different tickets that might be avaliable.

      • Nice well to upsell you lounge access for $100 USD

      • So let's say you save $500 on this deal vs. ANA or JAL. But you have to take an extra 2 days of annual leave! On top of being tired and jetlagged. Surely that's not worth it. This is from the perspective of a DINK though. Maybe those paying for a family of 4 may find it a better deal?

        • +1

Extra 2 days of Annual Leave, to eat Malaysian food in Malaysia :-)

      • +3

There's really only value for one way air fares here as the the layovers and price for a budget airline is too close to Chinese full service airlines for the cramped a330s with no meals or baggage included.

        • +1

Plenty of the Chinese full service airlines no longer charge a premium for one-way. China Southern and Xiamen are the two I use most often.

          • +1

@factor: Even without the Chinese airlines discounting, the value isn't there for long haul low cost airlines as people need to eat and drink and will likely also need some luggage too.

The fact is airline kitchens are very efficient operations and it probably at the cheapest end of the scale only costs like $5 per passenger, per meal, so to remove perks like meals on longer flights makes a much smaller percentage of the ticket price compared to shorter hops.

Globally i'd say at least 30% of flights internationally on short haul would be some form of LCC, but on long haul international, it would be barely 5% as there are more downsides and not enough cost benefits to running a slimline operation.

            • @Pcoder: Man that's the best five dollars ever spent, any man who is sick of picnicking in the sky is sick of life

    • I've been on the Asian routes on them. Very tight, much more so than Scoot. As soon as the person in front reclines back, you're literally caged in. Happy with the polite crews though.

      Really cheap prices nonetheless.

      • Take their "business" class. Same coins as QF Econ, but it's no frill and comfortable.

      • +1

Oh boy getting a refund out of scoot will turn your hair grey, caveat emptor gents

    • The reason why it is so cheap on these routes is because on board their planes (They fly A330s) they put in 9 seats per row in a 3-3-3 configuration.
Most other airlines that fly these planes only put 8 seats per row in a 2-4-2 configuration. This means they can fit more people onboard the plane. This comes at the cost of seat width, so if you are a larger person, you may find it to be an uncomfortable journey.

      • -3

Are you sure? I haven't been on a 2-4-2 configuration in a long time.

        • Qantas does 2-4-2 on their A330s to Tokyo, if you get a window/aisle seat it's not too cramped.

        • I just sat a 2-4-2 config on a Qantas flight to the US. It wasnt that comfy also to be honest.

          • @KaTst3R: Yeah it's probably because the seats are really old, they show their age in the screens which are tiny and unresponsive to touch.
Qantas are retrofitting their A330s with the 2-4-2 config to the same seats they will have on the project sunrise planes. Should be more comfortable for these 13 hour flights.

        • +2

Can verify it was a 3-3-3 layout
Went Syd-kul only in the last 2 months

        • +1

2-4-2 is used on the absolute large majority of A330's. Air Asia and Cebu are one of only a few to use 3-3-3 in A330

          • @Grannular: Not to mention, the seats on Cebu do not recline!

      • +1

Yeah the width is tiny at like 16 inches, but interestingly the pitch is 32 inches so plenty of leg room.

I haven't flown AA in 7 years but it looks like nothing has changed and KLIA2 is an awful airport to spend hours in.

        • KLIA2 is an awful airport

The food is good enough there, to eat through my transit hours.

        • 'KLIA2 is an awful airport to spend hours in'

it was like 1km walk from the gate so we wanted to get a lift on an electric vehicle - and with many hours to wait and nowhere to sit except the expanse of carpet and a wall to lean against, we were mostly concerned about keeping an eye on our baggage given the number of local men hanging around looking dodgy, so we took turns trying to get some shuteye laying on the carpet while the other kept watch

BUT - I loved the roti canteen restaurant which seems to cater for mostly airport workers - that was delicious - I'd want to go back there just for that !

          • @Hangryuman: I had an overnight stopover in KLIA2 over a decade ago. Hated it. No where to sit, rubbish everywhere, limited food options, stinking hot/humid. Ordered eggs on toast from a cafe and was given a slice of bread with a raw egg in a cup. Hoping things have improved.

      • (They fly A330s) they put in 9 seats per row in a 3-3-3 configuration.
Most other airlines that fly these planes only put 8 seats per row in a 2-4-2 configuration

        This is true.
Last year, I flew on Air Asia, from Guangzhou to Kuala Lumpur, and it was a 'squeeze' in the 3-3-3 configuration, and then same Air Asia airline (I think) for KL to Sydney, and it was more comfortable with the 2-4-2.

    • Some flights are 4 stops and 34 hours !

    My favourite low cost carrier

No longer mine! Used to be.
Flew with them so many times. Even to London $650 return in 2010. Loved the cheap Nasi Lemak they served.

Booked return flight to KL in 2020. AA went into liquidation with my money

Finally offered voucher towards flight portion of fare. Amounts to about $20 off cheapest sale price on international flights - only with AirAsia X😜

    • At least it's x rated

  • +4

"No longer mine! Used to be.
Booked return flight to KL in 2020. AA went into liquidation with my money."

Same here. AirAsia offered $A70 credit off the fare portion of an AirAsia X ticket. However, AirAsia X charges more than other budget airlines.

  • Is there any flight to Bangkok?

    • For Syd people, last chance for low cost direct Syd-BKK route this month. Unfortunately AirAsia is stopping this route.

  • The terminal you are stuck( terminal 2) in is very minimal
Couple of food places to eat and that’s all
There is a hotel in the terminal
Never found out the price but

  • +3

In my last Air Asia flight experience, they missed my connecting flight (apparently it was the last one of the day) and 1/3 of the passengers were all booked in a dirty 3 star motel in a remote area of KL for an overnight stay. Some passengers even opted to take a cab to stay in a proper hotel in the city. It was one of the most horrible experiences i had flying and never again.

    • Omg. Not the Nilai again? Been there done that. Instead of being taken to the no frills but fine Tune hotel minutes away, taxied to the worse Malaysian level motel ever to wait for the next flight (the next morning). Thanks air asia!

      • Wait…Nilai sounds familiar!!!!

Is that the hotel name? Feels like i got some recollection of this word.

      • +1

I had a look on Google map. It does look like it is the Seri Nilai Hotel and noticed that it is a 2 star motel rather than 3 stars. My biggest recollection is that there is a Tesco/Lotus hypermarket near by.

It was probably the worst hotel/motel/accomodation I have stayed in my life. Most of the passengers didnt even sleep in the room and opted to hang outside the hotel chatting/smoking/drinking/sharing food that they bought from Tesco. It was that bad.

  • I missed the Brisbane-Tokyo deal last month, so on the lookout for some options there!

I clicked through few months and found the $500 one way but hoping for prices similar to those above. Any tips on doing a wider search without needing to go day-by-day for the whole year?

  • +3

Just be aware that they like to cancel the flights 3 weeks before if the loading is low, then you have to fight to get the refund, and rebook with other airlines for even higher fare if you still want to go to that holiday, I just ignore them. (this is my real experience)

  • Can we please have Airasia Australia? Domestic flights!

  • -1

Only one flight in March and it's the 4th, lol.

And after reading the comments in here it sounds more like a scam airline anyway.

  • +3

Lol it's so hard to plan if U are flying with AirAsia. I had my flight rescheduled twice. If they can't fill the plane they will cancel and merge with the next one.

  • +3

The same AI picture again 😅 At the very least, take the garbage letters out, it just looks unprofessional.

  • AirAsia feels like being herded like cattle. Tiny seats and leg room. Wouldn’t take a flight longer than 2 hours on it!

  • How does adding bags/food work given these aren't booked with AA? Easy to add afterwards?

  • +2

Long layover… No thanks.. spend the extra 3 or 400 imho and get impeccable service with a Japanese airline.

  • +2

Is there anyway to extend the layover to like a day or two instead of 11 hours?

  • +1

Cheap..but long flights, some are 4 stops and 34 hours.

  • +2

Air Asia was…ok for a recent flight to Malaysia. Obviously nothing included, no check-in baggage but I knew that booking the flights. However upon online check-in their system literally gives you a random seat, and I mean random for each person in your party. I ended up sitting in an middle-aisle seat while my wife sat in the window-aisle seat a row in front. On the way back I was in the middle-middle and my wife same row, middle-window. And then if you want to switch your seats it's another $29pp. Food was ok priced but portions were small.

So all-in-all, I would probably fly with them again if the price was really good but you basically have to have no expectations and bring your own entertainment.

  • +3

Life is too short to travel anywhere over 4hrs with these LCC. Had terrible experiences with AirAsia, Scoot, Jetstar in the past and vowed to never fly with them again. Would happily pay $300-400 more for any full service Asian Carrier for my own mental health.

  • +1

    Does this include landing ?

  • Trip.com is selling OW SYD to KUL seats on AirAsia X for $A210.00 this afternoon.

I have never bought anything from Trip.com.

  • Air Asia doong any cheap flights to malaysia? Maybe from september?
