MINISFORUM UM760 Slim Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS Processor Mini Computer(6C/12T, Up to 5.0GHz), 16GB DDR5 RAM & 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, Support 8K@60Hz HDMI 2.1/USB4 Output, WIFI6E/BT5.3/Auto Power On

About $150 off normal retail. One of the better deals around for a mid-range mini pc in my opinion. No oculink but has a spare m.2 port if an eGPU is your intention. All units I've heard of (including mine) have come with a single 16GB stick of Crucial DDR5-5600, check on arrival as you'll want to add another 16GB stick for dual channel (cheap upgrade, around $65).

Limited time deal, unsure of end date but has been on sale recently for this price. Can check sales history here:

$479.99 :-) in the CostaLivinCrisis that 99c makes all the difference

          ffs bro lol

  • +1

$480 hmmm that Ryzen 5 7640hs is a power hungry beast at 54w

    • Theres plenty of cheaper and less "power hungry" options around N95/N97/N100/N150 etc if that suits your energy concerns and use case better.

      • oh gawd no, look at the benchmarks, even against the similarly priced AMD Ryzen 7 5825U, this thing is a beast. But I was surprised at the power used.

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5594vs4788/AMD-Ryzen-5-…

        • +2

Agreed, the Intel N CPUs are way underpowered compared to Ryzen. Great for some applications but not comparable.

5825u is probably the way to go if you want less wattage. 20% less performance but 70% less power usage, similar price.

    • +1

You can set power output to 45w or less. I didn't notice any difference at 45w as opposed to 54w.

      • Single digit performance impact on only all core loads probably.

    • It'd use less when idling though?

      • +2

They mean 54W TDP in the context of heat output, not power consumption in watts. TDP values haven’t aligned with power consumption for a long time.

My main concern with using these mini PCs is how they deal with thermals because those small fans tend to be annoyingly screechy at load.

    • +2

TDP is not a measurement of power consumption, rather the maximum heat the cpu can generate measured in watts. This entire PC idles at 12W and maxes out at 73W:

They very quickly ramp up to higher power levels when needed then just as quickly ramp down. In normal use the whole PC will probably use around 30W on average.

Good unit, extremely fast and you can light game on it as well. Definitely get a second ram stick to make use of dual channel mode. Very quiet as well. Only issue I had was applying the latest windows feature update, 24h2. It will fail if you have the latest amd adrenaline installed.

    • -1

Probably the spyware interacting with the forced microsoft recall install ;)

      • +1

Nah it's a known issue. You can install an older version of adrenaline and it's fine.

    • Seems to support up to 96GB of RAM.

  • @Oddie do you know what brand ssd came with your unit?

    • +1

Honestly I couldnt tell you from memory, if someone else cant answer I'll find out tomorrow when I'm home.

    • +2

      Kingston 1tb m.2 2230

  • How loud/hot do these mini PCs get when just playing a single 4K video file?

    • +1

Noise has never been an issue for me under any load.

    • +3

Very quiet, you won't hear it.
      Honestly it's quite impressive.

      • +1

Agreed. If you've ever heard one of the GMKtec's you definitely appreciate the difference.

        • Is this from direct experience playing a 4K file or a conclusion drawn laterally from other experiences? I just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on a jet engine sounding mini PC! It was either something like this, or a fanless N100.

  • Been looking at minisforum, beelink, gmtek for a possible homelab machine to fiddle with proxmox and dockerise some/all of email server, mastodon, single-camera nvr, vpn server, pihole, bluesky, nextcloud. Don't need NAS, media transcoding. Let's say I've got $400-500 to include unit and any worthwhile upgrades. Anyone familiar enough with these miniPCs to recommend one? Noise/power not issues as it'll be in a comms rack in the garage. Or refurb desktop maybe?

This or the Minisforum UM870 for light gaming? I note the UM870 has an integrated gpu, whereas the UM870 does not.

  • OP mentions using the M.2 port for an eGPU, and while that's of course valid it is worth mentioning that the USB4 port will work with USB4/Thunderbolt 3/4 eGPU setups.

The trade off in terms of bandwidth performance b/w Oculink and USB4 is fairly reasonable unless you're going to pair this with a >RTX 4080 GPU.

    • You can absolutely use the USB4 port for a eGPU but in my mind if youre going to the route of eGPU with this mini pc you're better off using the m.2 port. Not as convenient or tidy but m.2 (and Oculink) directly support the PCI-E protocol so there's no additional latency like Thunderbolt.

      • +1

If someone is dedicated to using an eGPU setup the MS-A1 currently for $399 might be preferable as it has an Oculink port, though that is BYO CPU/RAM/SSD.

        • It is a compelling choice, just ups the budget a bit. Been thinking about it myself though.

  • This has been this nearly price for a while thanks to a coupon. Still a great deal, and is very tempting to upgrade from a N100 system. My only reservation apart from idle power usage would be AMD VCN vs Intel's quicksync.

    • If you're running a Plex server/transcoding then yeah

  • Is there OS included in this one or is it BYO?

    • Win 11 Pro included

      • -2

Is it difficult to reinstall the OS in case of malware, without losing your windows licence? Do you need to login with your Microsoft account before reinstalling?

  • +1

    great, thanks for the info

  • Is this good for gaming?
I am looking for one with AMD Radeon 780M.

    • It's not my use case but punch 'Minisforum UM760' into YouTube and you'll see some examples.

Found this review, including some gaming specs: https://etaprimezone.com/minisforum-um760-slim-unboxing-test…

Fallout 4: The system averaged about 72 frames per second at 1080p on medium settings, demonstrating that even older games can run smoothly.
Hogwarts Legacy: The system achieved about 78 frames per second, despite the fact that the settings had to be reduced to 900p with FSR (set to Performance). The game is playable at 1080p, however the average frame rate drops to 58.
Forza Horizon 5: The system achieved a consistent 80 frames per second at 1080p on medium settings. Even though the systems with the 780M can push closer to 98 FPS, this is still a fantastic performance for the 760M.
Horizon Forbidden West: One of the trickier games to run, this one has to be lowered to 900p with frame generation turned on and FSR set to Performance. The game was nevertheless playable despite the sporadic drops, with an average frame rate of 64 frames per second.
Cyberpunk 2077: The system achieved an amazing 65 frames per second even at 900p low with FSR set to Auto, demonstrating that even demanding games can run smoothly with the correct settings.

  • What GPU is the APU graphics equivalent to?
Is it as good as the RX 6600?

    • +2

      Not even close bro.

    • like barely a GTX 1050

  • Been this price for a while now.

  • Looking for recommendations to run a Linux dev environment.

  • Can anyone assist whether this has enough capacity to daisy chain two monitors 4k@60hz via usb4/usbc. Or would it make each monitor 4k@30hz

    • Can't you just go USB4 and DP?

  • was sorely tempted, but then checked against my 4800U laptop - only a 30 or so % increase in benchmarks!

will hold off for the time being! seriously considering jumping to a desktop tho

    • +1

Depends on what you need it for whether the expense of a desktop PC is worth it or not. For me, it's not. It's certainly not a gaming kit, although it does handle most games at lower settings and emulation quite well. A generous mate gifted me a 3080 ti so I'm keen to see how well that pairs as an eGPU.

  • Can you have a single USB-C cable to this for power/video/data? Or is it just video.

    • Yes for power, but expect a considerable performance loss. Never tried for all 3.. basically, just don't. Use the included power supply to avoid disappointment.
