Just wondering is Meals for Mutts a reasonable dog food. Have been using Black Hawks for years but finding it very expensive, have been looking for an alternative.

Petcircle has $20 new user discount which brings it down to $139.99 -> $119.9

On the home page there is a pop-up to sign up

  • Thank you op. Decent price for the Blackhawk.

  • It blows my mind how expensive this incinerated rubbish is.
At $124 = $6.2 per kg for something that has the nutritional value of cardboard.
You can get a whole chicken from ALDI for $5.99 per kg.

    • Ive been using blackhawk for years, and I have no real complaints. That said I'm sure your criticism has some merit, even if it is flawed.

Your chicken has a lot of moisture (water weight) in it, where this food has had its moisture removed. Chicken by itself is not a balanced diet.

      • Of course you pair it other items like sardines, veggies and offal.
Point I was making is that 90% of the nutrients have been removed via the incineration process, yet it is equal or more expensive than genuinely healthy and nutritious meal. If it was half the price it would make sense to buy it, kinda, but as someone that values health and wellbeing for my family friend, I can't justify these prices. Just ripping yourself off, and robbing your furry friends of a genuinely great meal for a comparable dollar

      • And in regards to moisture content, it is highly desirable as it help prevent UTI's and of course hydrates. I boil the Chickens and then make a broth out of it.

        • Do you have a recommended workflow and recipe for doing homemade meals (genuinely curious)?

Like 70% dog mince and then 30% offal. How much does that end up costing per meal?

  • Yes those portions are pretty much what I do
To keep costs down I purchased a large freezer and keep it as full as possible to save on energy, then bulk buy whatever protein and offal I can find on special.

For the prepared meals I get whatever protein such as boiled chicken, mince it all up bones and all with offal, a carrot, half zucchini, (sometimes pumpkin and broccoli if I'm cooking it for myself which is almost every other day) about teaspoon worth of garlic clove, handful of spinach, teaspoon turmeric, pinch of pepper and salt, table spoon coconut oil, 1 sardine, 1 egg, including egg shell (I save all the egg shells and ground them, great source of calcium) eyeball about 50ml of chicken broth and every 2nd/3rd day a dollop of natural greek yoghurt.

For the lazy days and time poor days, I feed him Leading Raw frozen food from Costco. It's currently $16.99 a box. 1 box = equals 3 summer days, or 4 winter days worth of food for my Extra large German Shepherd.

    • Honesty I stopped keeping track of cost a long time ago as I realised I have taken on the responsibility to look after this living being so I chosen to focus more on his wellbeing, and just buy the cheapest item that meet the minimum standards I've set
but from memory I think landed somewhere around 80-90 per week.
