Apple Pay Travelling on Sydney Trains Tap on Tap off

Hi, been using my Apple Pay with my credit card for train travel for a long time.
Question, my wife and I share the same credit card in our Apple Pay wallets.

If I tap on, then she taps on, is it going to reverse the 1st like a cancellation.
I know it would do that if you used the physical card, not sure if the tokens in the wallet make the same card unique on both devices.

    Good question….

Also, what about supplementary credit card holders with different physical cards, but the same credit card number ???

This is something Victorians won't have to worry about for a very long time…. Thanks Jacinta

as far as I know, when we setup apple pay on our phone, it acts as a separate card linked to our bank account, which you can verify by checking the card number in the apple pay application. so I think no it won't reverse the tap on as you are using two separate cards with different card number.

    • Thanks for that info, I can see that the last 4 digits displayed are different on both devices.

If you check the "Card Number" in your apple wallet on each device, there will be both the real physical number, and a different number unique to each device.
But I don't know how that affects anything, or how to get the full number.

The more informative way would be to stick the real number into here: https://transportnsw.info/manage-contactless/

  • Just checking if phone/cc taps have all the benefits of opal card taps?

    • Yes it does (eg weekend limits)
      But only for adult fares

      • I just checked, it has off-peak benefit, but not 1 hour transfer benefit (for some people this can be effectively paying one-way for a return trip)?

        • Where did you see that?

This says you have all the same benefits:

          • @SmiTTy: Sorry, you are right.

I did an AI check previously, but my prompting must have been poor.

When I search again with this: "several trips using the same mode of transport, and if your transfer occurs within 60 minutes from your last tap off, you only pay on fare based on the distance if you travel using credit card or opal card" it's the same outcome.

      • But only for adult fares

        Why not concessions?

I use Android (Google wallet) and use it exactly how you mention and it works just fine (my tap doesn't negate my wife's tap). I can only assume this works the same with Apple pay.

BTW you can register your cc on the opal app to track tap ons and off's, so that's a good way to check it at the end of the day (not as you tap unfortunately due to the lag)

  • It registers as different devices. My wife was using her apple watch to tap on and her iPhone to tap off. Sydney trains were registering both devices as different and charged her the full minimum trip for each tap on and tap off.
