  • These things should be banned

      Why?

      • According to Mr Albo

Well…that’s about reserving a spot not their use in general.

Seriously though why? Why can’t people use these to shade themselves under our hot Australian sun?

      • -7

"shade themselves under our hot Australian sun"

They don't work very well other than mid day with the sun right above.

        • +5

They actually do work quite well

        • +1

Would be nice to be able to attach a side wall to it, similar to gazebos.

I searched for one before and found a 3rd party seller but it's pretty pricey.

        • This is just an inherent flaw of temporary shade coverings.

      Even if it reduces cancer?

      • -8

they probably increase cancer as normally people disappear in the middle of the day or at least use lots of sunscreen, quite a few people wrongly think you don't need sunscreen under these.

But I suspect the reason they actually want them banned is because they're rather large and take up a lot of unnecessary room on a crowded beach. And the campaign by NewsCorp around them that people are turning up at the beach in the early morning, setting them up in premium spaces, going back home leaving them unattended to save them a spot for later in the day. But means no one else can uae that spot in the mean time.

personally I just move to a beach where that isn't a problem..like anywhere outside of Sydney.

        • I’m a fan of these cabanas but I completely disagree with setting them up and leaving to ‘save a slot’

  • Spotted 8 of this pattern in a cluster last week.

The CoolCabana People are easily startled, but they will soon be back. And in greater numbers

  • +2

    From their page:
How does this compare to a large beach umbrella?

A large CoolCabana provides more than double the shade. A large beach umbrella is typically 2m in diameter, which provides 3.1m2 of shade, close to half of the 5.8m2 of shade from a large CoolCabana.
    ——-

    That’s not how logic works!

    • They know their audience.

    • The latest umbrellas have tie downs, to stop the older style flying down the beach and impaling unsuspecting bathers.

    • Maybe it doesnt logically make sence, but geometrically it checks out

      • practically it doesn't, given that the sun moves, but unlike an umbrella, it isn't adjustable, so can't maintain the same amount of shade throughout the day

Anthony Albanese does not approve of this deal - as it doesnt directly benefit him and allows us plebs who cant afford 4.5m beach house to get a nice spot at the beach

    • Too bad Dutton's 300 million net worth overshadows albo

Dutton 300m networth wasnt built on milking and ripping off taxpayers his wife runs a childcare business

They’re getting so big, need to start paying rent

    • The rental crisis is as bad enough as it is

Just get a $20 beach tent from Kmart. More protection and better value.

      Nice kite

    • Such low hanging fruit to just suggest a kmart-anko branded knock off for a quarter of the price and an eighth of the quality, not even the same size dude comon…

Mine has lasted me 3 years and still going strong + don't have to worry about regularly repositioning in the shade as per umbrellas / cabanas. Can fit 3 people or 2 with plenty of space. YMMV.

        • I just don't think what you have posted is an equivalent alternative. Plus sample size of 1 doesn't count for much but glad it works for you mate.

        • Except if the sun is shining in directly to the front of your shelter…

I've got a similar I've from Macpac and after a while a few of the poles broke. Much prefer the Coolcabana now.

  • If you really want to impress your fellow beachgoers, buy a knockoff with a boombox for $178 + delivery. It even comes with a sidewall so you can block off those jealous stares…

    • Again it's only 1.8m on a side

    • +1

Used to own one. One of the legs bent when it was hit by a sudden, strong gust of wind. Couldnt fold it back in.

  • The real deal is the upside down pineapple pattern.

  • Wouldn't a gazebo for similar price be better quality and better resistance against the wind?

    • Yes for me. Went with Coleman Ultra Compact Gazebo, 2 side walls and a sand bag kit for beach use. Worked out slightly cheaper than CoolCabana 5.

  • I couldn't bring myself to pay for a CoolCabana so I grabbed this from Kings for $80 as it was only a couple of kilos heavier and comes with an attached wall.

Inb4 comments about kings quality - Structure seems sturdy enough, but the canvas is very light. Might last a year if I'm lucky, then I might look at something higher spec.

    Best beach shelter.

    not necessarily

Can & do these things blow away? Curious if they could hurt someone if a blustery cool change comes through or wind gets up.

    • +1

I've never seen a CoolCabana blow away. They do move and I have seen bent centre columns but have never seen one take flight. (Unlike umbrellas and tents which frequently take flight on windy days at the beach!)

  • Thinking of ordering Large one with the cheapest pattern.
    Is the Large too big??
