You could always join the evergrowing trend of not buying insurance and then if something goes wrong, have a friend setup a GoFundMe for you….
In all seriousness though, without knowing all of your individual circumstances, there's no quick and easy answer.
Should the government make insurance mandatory, do you think? And just tax those some people who would have donated to the GunFundMes a little more to pay for mandatory insurance for low income people.
government make insurance mandatory
So how we going to enforce it? If some person don't have insurance, kick them out to the kerb? And ban them from Ozb?
Should the government make insurance mandatory, do you think?
No but if someone is the type of person who would rely on crowdfunding if something goes wrong, then probably best to crowdfund the money to pay for the insurance policy instead, as it's a lot cheaper than trying to pay for the aftermath.
Yes but… no sob (stupidity) story no crowdfunding.
No building insurance, no mortgage, that is, self-funding/bank of mom and pop, etc.
FTFY.
You could always join the ever growing trend of not buying insurance and then if something goes wrong lob a post on Ozbargain.
Too late for that, it's only available to new accounts.
My bad
and then if something goes wrong
You mean stick your hand out and cry to the gov for a bail out……
I built my house on a flood plain and it flooded, help me government!
I built my timber clad house on an isolated tree lined street adjoining a national park. Someone needs to pay for its rebuilding!
Don't be lazy. Too many variables unique to your location. It requires a little effort but I believe in you.
You're new at leading horses, aren't you?
I would have gone with your patented “FFS” response
Or are you saving that for when their house floods or burns down and they need help because of no insurance?
I avoid that response on national public holidays as a sign of respect.
Best value policy will be one that's bundled with contents
Get any policy for the settlement to complete. Then take your time to compare quotes.
Looking for Cheapest House Insurance in NSW
"Dodgy Bros Inc Insurance"…
Available through the Broker Dooey Cheetham and Howe.
I live on elevated land where my flood risk is essentially zero. I chose an insurer which specifically does not cover flood ( significantly cheaper). Your local council should supply flood risk maps for your area. Perhaps this might be an option for you. Government has dragged insurance companies ( kicking & screaming) to supply flood insurance for most people. This, plus the increased property values has led to the high insurance costs we see today. Good luck with your deliberation
Are you still covered for rainwater falloff and storm surge? Some insurers won't include that if you don't take out flood cover.
Which insurer does not cover flood?
It's optional with budget direct.
are you saying with BD if you don't take out flood, you're not covered for storm surge either?
nvm I checked, storm is covered. I've actually seen lots of insurances sperate storm from flood. If not in a flood zone you'll save a few $$$
NRMA had increased my combined house and contents due next month from $2250 up to $2650. I do have the usual multi policy discounts.
I checked Aust Post/QBE, GIO, Allianz and AIMI and they were all up in the $4700 to $5300 range.
I'll stop my complaining and stay where I am 🤷
I have been with NRMA for 25 years. The multipolicy and loyalty discounts are genuine; there have been fines and class actions for shenanigans, to ensure that this is the case. If you have heaps of business with them for a long time, they treat you well - you need to check/chat; not just expect rainbows and unicorns passively.
I cycle between Qantas and Virgin, both are white labeled Budget Direct policies but offer a decent whack of points each year and generally a 15% discount off your first policy (hence why I jump every 12 months). As they are fundamentally the same product it’s very easy do compare apples with apples
The bank you got the mortgage with might give you a discount on their home insurance.
I recently renewed my insurance and budget direct was cheapest. Might be different for you, different house, different area etc.
That said all quotes have been rising a lot.
Cheapest House Insurance
If a fire burns down your house, do you want to get paid for the replacement or are you just happy to have the cheapest?
If there was one insurer that was always cheaper all the other insurers would quickly go out of business, and/or a lot of questions would be being asked how they do it and stay in business. The insurance industry works by one insurer offering a bit better deal here, and another offering it there.
Try coles insurance. I was with NRMA but they increased then i found Coles is cheaper
What’s the amounts on the 3 quotes you’ve gotten so far?
