I mean they're actually much better than most other USB drives though? The write speeds whilst not -amazing- are still much higher than most other USBs (particularly at the price point). These are actually my 'go to' for USBs now as the value is really good and they last a long time due to the larger size and ability to dissipate heat. Shame the 64GB isn't on special as I find myself needing quantity rather than quality with these (great for OS boot disks etc).

      • The read speeds are also very quick for a flash drive

        • Agreed, I think they're pretty good

    • +2

Check out the CrystalDiskMark score for the 256GB version - sequential write speed 385MB/s and write speed of 115MB/s are decently fast for a flash drive. Bear in mind these are not NVME SSD.

    • its USB 3.1, how can it be slow?

      • +6

        I hope you were joking.

        • No?

          • @Homr: The interface between the device and host computer is only one part of the chain that contributes to the overall speed.

The storage controller and the read and write speeds of the non-volatile memory chips tend to be what sets the speed. Seldom will you see the top speed of USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps / ~625MBps) approached by a USB 'Thumb drive' / 'memory stick'.

            • @airtime: About the same as saying, you're driving on the Autobarn how can you be slow

      • +1

They get incredibly hot and slow down quickly on write.

        • +1

SanDisk does, I have one of these and while it's no SSD it's bloody decent for the price. Hence why I've ditched SanDisk for Samsung

        • +1

Still better than the sandisk usb's close to this price that heatup and have quick slowdowns.

I got a Sandisk Ultra only after 4 months, now it will crash then eject if copying anything which takes more than 3 mins now, the issue also happening when pulling files out from the stick, now I am stuck and how can I claim warranty when i still need my files in there. BTW I bought mine from Centrecom, can someone tell me should I take it back to Centrecom or contact Sandisk customer support? Which way is easier?

    • Better than most of what is at OW.

  • Don't forget that the Sandisk Ultra 64GB USB drive is still $11 at Amazon though the Red and Blue variants are back to $22. https://www.amazon.com.au/SanDisk-Personal-Computer-SDCZ48-0…

    • +1

Sandisk Ultra is more on the lower-end budget range, its sequential speed is not as fast and its random small file speed is very slow. The more expensive Sandisk Extreme Pro is more comparable to this Samsung Bar Plus.

  • 256GB is OOS

Bought this (128GB model) from Amazon US for $16 in October last year, has been working great so far.

  • Which is better SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C Flash Drive, 256 GB or this?

    • Sandisk Ultra range is the lower-end budget range, however one advantage of the Dual Drive is it has both USB-A and USB-C connections.

    • No

      • Do you have one or have used one?

        • +4

          2TB for $35.27

Come on mate, it hasn't been that long of a weekend

    • When it is too good to be true…

        • +3

No. It's more than 2x the price compared to catch one and it's on clearance also made by a cheaper brand and is sold by a real company.
          That one is real

Catch one looks fake in the picture, sold by some random seller, way too cheap.
          That one is fake.

        • +1

Not really. You can get decent 1TB SSD usb ~$120, so mot much of a stretch to imagine a non-SSD usb being around $90

      • -1

it is too true to be good

    • I reckon it would have to be a fake.

  • +1

Got the same model many years ago, from memory the usb stick will get pretty warm after some use, not sure if this is still the case

    • +1

I think people view this as a positive since the case is drawing the heat away from the internal electronics.

  • Don't these get stupid hot?

    • +2

I've been using one for like 7 years, so it may have different guts from this one. Mine is like 30-40 degrees when in use and much less in idle. But inside it's not Samsung at all, and it got bad sectors just while laying on the shelf.

      • Source on the insides not Samsung at all? I have a 64GB and a 128GB version of these. All I can tell is that they use some Silicon Motion controller, but I'm unsure of the NAND flash chips used.

A technical review of the older Samsung Bar (non-Plus model) shows that one used a Silicon Motion controller and Samsung NAND flash. I tried running the Flash Drive Information Extract program on my Bar Plus, but it didn't spit out any useful information.

        • +1

Yep, that's what I mean. I have Samsung Pro SSD and it's made on Samsung controllers as well, but the stick is on Silicon Motion.

  • Get the dual drive san disk. They are a game changer

    • Not if you like transfer speed

  • 128GB is also OOS now

  • Hardly Normal now has the 128GB @ $19
