Simple entry sewing machine recommendations

Hi all,

I'm needing some advice on what sewing machine to buy as an entry machine with basic stitch patterns and maybe some features that you think will save me some headaches.

I always find myself needing to stitch something and my partner doesn't know how (though she does make macrame, if that can even be compared?)

Our budget is under $300 (so I'm sure it's not going to win awards) - really looking for advice on features that if one was to go and buy a machine without thinking, would then wish they had them.

Thank you in advance!

  • Whoops….too late…

I bought this one 50% off. $199. Its mechanical and a reveiwer said they've been sewing for years and it reminds them of the old style machinces.

Its 11:35am and I'm convinced! Haha

Comment if you think I made a good or bad decision?

  • It depends what you want to use it to do. I have a sewing machine but I still do a lot of smaller jobs by hand sewing; e.g. taking up pants, reattaching buttons, repairing small tears, etc.

During lockdown I used my sewing machine to create thermal curtains using two Queen size bedsheets and a king size Doona. I also patch jeans using the sewing machine.

The thing to do now is learn how to thread it up, how the various tension settings work and get a bunch of rags/scrap material to practice the various stitch options and how best to apply them. Look at a bunch of videos to give you tips and tricks.

The machine should be fine but it is just a dust catcher if you don’t know how to use it properly and have no real idea what you will use it for.

  • Absolutely the types of things ypu mention, curtins, the odd ripped clothes, etc. Just wimple stuff.

Ok, ill check out some videos on youtube! Thank you

    • If it is wimple stuff you will have to get in the habit of using it.
