Which Is Better Upgrade Whole PC or Just Parts?

Hi just wondering if is it worth selling off the whole PC? and buying a whole new one with new parts. Or upgrading to the newest just buying the parts needed to upgrade?

I still have a GIGABYTE X670 AORUS ELITE AX AM5 ATX Motherboard
and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, 6-Core/12 Threads UNLOCKED

I want to upgrade to the 5080 when that comes out. I can replace gpu's easily, cpu's I have never done and worried about doing it myself. I would get someone to do it for me and pay most likely.

that is more than enough to run console games

only change GPU unless you want to try hard at competitive games or real time strategy. factor in the potential risk and cost involved, dont change anything other than GPU

    • thanks heaps, do you know if the connectors are the same? i had a 4080

all graphics card use same slot, takes less than a minute to replace and youtube.
you might have to upgrade power supply if its not powerful enough to power a 5080, and chances are you can get away with a less powerful supply:

        Required System Power (W) (5) 850
Supplementary Power Connectors 3x PCIe 8-pin cables

things get complicated when you change CPU/Motherboard as those are usually locked to specific interface combos and memory generation

        • my power supply is good, 850 gold, just worried about the cables lol

@Rukiata: The only cables you need to unplug (inside of the computer case) when swapping to a different GPU is the PCIE 6-pin or 8-pin power cable that go into the graphics card, see picture. You don't need to remove anything else and everything else stays in place.

      I assume you mean CPU!

CPUs are a bit scary to change the first time, but honestly it's very hard to do wrong. 99% of the time when something goes wrong (i.e. a socket pin gets bent) it's because the user was simply being careless and dropped the CPU. This stat is moderately pulled out of my ass, but I do mean to highlight that it you follow a good build guide that is reputable for these sort of things (LTT/Gamers Nexus/Jayz2Cents not The Verge) it's hard to go terribly wrong.

In saying this, the 7600X should be fine for now!

You haven't said what resolution and refresh rate your monitor is - which is probably the most important piece of info!

  • Hijacking this - I have just upgraded to a 49" ultra wide curved 5k display monitor (5120 x 1440) and Ryzen 7 5800x. I am currently running an old MSI 1070 8G GPU and am looking to upgrade. Should I be looking at something from the 40xx series or would even a 30xx be sufficient? Mostly for gaming, a little bit for productivity (spreadsheets, word docs etc.).

Personally, playing at that resolution I'd go for the 40 series unless you are willing to buy a second hand 30 series card. Ideally something with 16gb of vram.

      • Sweet, my thoughts too. I am looking at second hand cards, but wary of the risks that come with it. I was potentially thinking getting something like a 4070 (super or ti) to last me a few years and then go a 50xx, but they're sooo expensive.

  • whats peoples thoughts of selling GPU's on ebay I see lots of horror stories and scams about ppl buying them and scamming buyers.
