LycaMobile UK eSIM - Anyone Tried Activating While Still in Australia?

My daughter is travelling to the UK and I'm trying to put a UK eSIM into her phone so she has data.

I have done my OzBargain research and it seems Lyca Mobile prepaid plan offers the best value. This one, in case people are curious. Can anyone who's done this weigh in on how it went for them?

Lyca Mobile states that the eSIM must be activated in the UK, is there any reason we couldn't load it onto her phone prior to departure? I get that it won't provide a working service while in AU (and am wary that if it has roaming for AU I might regret this).

Interested in people's experience if there are any. Cheers.

Speaking from experience with other eSims, you should load it on to her phone prior to departure.
When it is installed, turn it off while you are in Aus, and when she arrives she will need to turn it on and make the eSim her default sim for data (assuming the eSim won't have any calls or texts).

I just got a GiffGaff physical sim, I know physical sims can be a hassle, but you get a free £5 credit if you go through the OzB referral system: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/giffgaff.com

I tried it a few days before I left and it got refunded.

Ended up having to buy another one and activated when I landed at Heathrow.

Remember to cancel before removing the eSIM as you are signing up for a plan. I deleted the sim and couldn't receive a text message to confirm I wanted to remove the plan - had to contact support via email.

Lyca were pretty good in the main cities but lost reception a few times on the road. Not sure what other carriers are like but can't go wrong for $15~ AUD
