  Can’t you just cancel the plan and pay any remaining balance on the phone hardware? I was under the impression that Optus plans are essentially month to month.

  I'm not sure when it comes to going on a plan through HN but with Optus their plans are now usually on a month to month basis. So you can cancel the plan and pay for the amount owing for the phone outright. You won't pay any extra, you'll just pay what is owed.

  Just don't pay it. The debt will go to a debt collector but if you just ignore them long enough and waited enough for it to disappear from your credit report then that's all…free phone!
