Toyota Kluger or Kia Sorento

Update: Thanks a lot everyone, appreciate your time and response.

Put down a deposit on Kluger Hybrid today.

After much thought, both weighed on their strength but on my usage, its not going to heavy and more short trips, hence the decision.

I have been looking to buy 7 seater for a while and test drive both.

Toyota Kluger Hybrid
Kia Sorento Diesel

Sorento Diesel for ~71K, can get GT line but can get Kluger GX Hybrid for ~66K or GXL for ~76K.

Considering the value, Sorento beats it with all the features, but thinking about reliability makes me think a lot.

Sorento users highly talks about Diesel variant almost equal to Hybrid fuel economy even for urban driving.

Any inputs welcome on these two for deciding?

Appreciate your inputs. Thanks.

  • I have Sorento and I have driven Klugger extensively.

    I would lean towards Kia.

Much better feeling, solid car, better rear seats.

Get an EV. Wait a bit and get G9 or X9 from Xpeng.

  • I have had my Sorento since 2015 - no problems with it at all and really enjoyed driving it. No-one in kia has ever mentioned anything about having to drive highway regularly and I do not do that, so far 10 years its been fine. Never driven a kluger so can't give that balance but I'm sure it would also be great, plus a hybrid would save on fuel I assume?

Either way you will be happy I think.

  • Considering the value, Sorento beats it with all the features, but thinking about reliability makes me think a lot.

Anecdotally, we've had a Kia for nearly 8 years and only had minor issues (from memory, the worst was a sensor failure that was replaced under warranty). A mate of mine gets them as work cars and puts > 100k kms on them every year, and never had an issue. Plus you've got 7 years of warranty for peace of mind. I'd happily buy another Kia.

To the larger question: If there's no clear winner on paper to you, just go with the one that feels nice to drive.

  • Sorento has 7yr warranty and looks great inside and out.
Toyota is a big heavy lug and looks horrible imo.

Which one do you like to drive better and is more comfortable?

    • Agree, liked Sorento very much but then decided to go with Kluger Hybrid. Diesels maintenance might not be needed unlike before but couldn't give a thought on this if I needed that.

  • within these two model Sorento if you drive more than 15k kms per yr and would go on long drives frequently. otherwise petrol is recommended.

    • +1

True, mine is mostly short trips. Decided to go with Kluger.

  • tank 500

  • Why do people think a Toyota is more reliable than a Kia in this day and age?

Also do you really need 7 seats?

    • Need 7 but given Kia is doing good, couldn't get to a conclusion until now

    • because it is.. the gap has narrowed significantly and that's both credit to Kia and Toyota slacking off but the data still puts Toyota above Kia/Hyundais, obviously certain engines/models are better than others. overall you will get a much better value proposition out of Kia - but if reliability is your main metric, a Toyota hybrid really can't be beaten

    • Toyota win on resale value make more people buy Toyota.

  • ok niether toyota or kia mate.

I drive expensive cars, bmw, merc, Volvo etc but they are old school deisel and petrol. My new..next car will be a Zeekr 7x EV. chiense cars are coming and they are very high quality.

I'm not a EV fan boy but its the future and tech coming out of china is now world class. this and next will be huge for new ev cars. All the legacy old brands are going under and will not exist in 5 years. Toyota, Kia, maybe but VW group are dead, nissan, honda, mitsu, jag land rover and soo many more will be gone.

What ever you buy make sure its not old petrol or deisel. Test drive Hybrid byd large SUV that coming out this year - sister car to the shark ute

    • Thank you, needed the vehicle sooner so couldn't wait. I'm also looking forward for EB, may be another 5 seater once I sell the current one.

  • +1

As others have shared before, Kluger for long term if you want to keep it forever.
Personally, I can't stand the interiors Toyota puts up even with a 70K car. It is however, the BEST hybrid system, time tested and bullet proof.
I hated the CVT transmission as well.

PS: I own a Kia Sorento GT line Diesel since 2017. Zero DPF issues so far. Mostly short trips and every few weeks take it for longish drives, which you will do anyway if you have a family. Sit in each car, equivalent version and buy what your heart wants and your purse can afford. You wont be disappointed they are both excellent cars.

    • If you care about features and creature comforts or a polished cabin then Toyota is not for you. It does wear off very quickly though, I went from a fancy euro with all the bells and whistles to a drab base model Toyota and I was surprised how much I didn't miss it

  • Get the Sorrento Hybrid.

    • If considering the Sorento Hybrid, may as well consider Santa Fe Hybrid as well which uses the same 1.6L turbo hybrid engine configuration with the automatic (not dual clutch) transmission.

  • Kia Sorrento

South Korea has superior technology and makes the best stuff, like Samsung and Daewoo

    • Samsung making the best stuff?….

      • +1

        and Daewoo??

  • Kluger Hybrid especially if its cheaper.

Diesels around town are a grenade waiting to go off.
