Does This Quote for New CCTV Supply and Install Seems Reasonable?

I am complete noob to the CCTV world but at least gathered that Dahua is a decent brand to go with and got couple of quotes to go at our new build.

Can someone who is more pro than me reassure that I am not getting ripped off and getting a half decent system as a general deterrent and of course capturing useful footage that can be used if anything does happen.

*Supply and Installation of 4 x Dahua 5MP Turret WizColor Security
Camera, 30 m, SMD Plus, PoE, Warm Light (DH-IPC-HDW2549EMP-S-PRO-ANZ) for $3500*

I am based in Perth for any installer recommendations if you got. Tia

Edited to add: Looking for a hard wired system only as I could get some rebate from the Council.

2nd Edit : Wow, just received another quote for exact same model and set up for $1850.

  • Dahua is a decent brand to go with

Yes, it is a good brand, but the OzBargain Favourite is Reolink.

I don't follow Dahua prices by $3,500 installed for 4 cameras with NVR? You can get a 8 Camera Reolink System (with NVR + cabling and 4TB HDD) for roughly $1,300 (give or take) and for me to do an install, I would quote roughl like $800-$900 if it was a local job for all 8 cameras with my offsider to come and help, its most of a days work.

Looking for a hard wired system only as I could get some rebate from the Council.

    Sure, Reolink is always hardwided.

I would say that is rip off overall. I couldn't justify spending $3,500 on 4 Cameras installed.

    • Cheers, that did feel little over priced tbh. I did get an other quote with slightly worse sensor(1/2.7 instead of 1/1.8 as above) but with 8MP for about $2000. Looks like I need to get few more for competitive pricing.

    • Any tips on running the cable to the eaves, access is quite tight. Easiest is probably removing tiles and and cutting temporary access through sarking and repatching it.

    I reckon a rip-off.
4 of the cameras retail for about $900. NVR unit is not specified ut reckon $400 would cover that.
Labour to run the POE cables would depend whether single or double storey,, but cannot see that running into a couple of thousand for just 4 cameras..
Hard wired is the way to go and get a few more quotes.

It is a rip off in two big ways.

If you are a noob and you have completely no interest in learning the basics of setting up CCTV at your home, then you should have been offered a complete solution (e.g. with NVR and HDD). It would have been a rip off anyway but at least it would save you time in the future.

However, judging by the description it is just to supply and install 4 cameras. So it is a completely shitty deal.

Instead, if you are building a house just pay $100-$150 for an Ethernet connection everywhere you want to install a camera. Once your house is finished, pay around ~$200 per camera and then decide how to install them. For a single story house, you can do that yourself with no issues. For two-storey you will need a ladder so it is up to you (you might pay someone to install).

    • Unfortunately, its too late to have the provisions done as our build is already done. Also, this has to be installed by an licensed installer to be eligible for the 50% rebate from local council. I will get few more quotes to check the best pricing available. Thanks for your input.

looks pricey - unless your home is multi storey or has some complexity in the hard wiring?

    I'd re-quote

Massive rip-off. WizColor is their low light camera product and 5MP is what you'd use 5 or so years ago. 6MP should be the absolute minimum and if budget permits can't go wrong with 8MP. Also don't agree to single type of camera for every location around the house. For example for the backyard and side walkways of a typical house a 180 degree dual lens camera would work better. Installers buy a single model camera in bulk and save quite a bit and try to mount these everywhere including sometimes indoors.

Also don't fall for the "My cameras are also made by Dahua even though they have a different brand name" crowd. This claim is correct as they are white label Dahua cameras(just like Harvey Norman has their own mattress brands so you can't compare prices elsewhere) but they all belong to Dahua budget range with low quality lenses, inferior AI and not so great low light performance, etc. This is a trick that installers use to sell you a $65 camera for $120 Dahua prices to maximize their profit.

I'm no CCTV installer but you can call me as someone who has inside knowledge in the industry. PM me if you have questions and need any recommendations or a price guide.

    Few questions:

Is the house single storey or double? What is the roof made of? Tiles or Colorbond?
Did you get Ethernet cables laid by the builder or does the price include cabling as well?

    • Reason for this particular model of cameras (5MP with 1/1.8 sensor) was solely for its sensor. Again that's what I gathered reading quick online posts - better to have a good sensor and decent MP than having high MP and bad sensor.

Every other 6 or 8MP has a only 1/2.7 sensor.

To answer your questions: Single story, no pre laid cables, pricing includes cabling and its colorbond roof with good access.

      • Your logic is sound. The Wizense cameras have a sensor that works better in low light conditions + has the additional LED that would turn on when it's dark and/or during motion detections. FYI. Considering there is a surcharge for colorbond roofing the second quote is ok even though it is still at the higher end of being acceptable. FYI The installer buy price for this camera is around $140+GST

Have a look at the Duhua camera kits available here - https://www.securitywholesalers.com.au/product-category/dahu…

Although this website doesn't have the exact model cameras you've been quoted, it'll still give you a good idea as to how your quote compares…..it appears way too high.

Cablers should only be charging around $150/hr. Maybe a bit more these days as they always claim they need a second person.

Definitely shop around for another installer. Look at cabling companies that do security as a side. Cameras pretty much self configure and software is probably straight forward. Its the cabling and ladder work noone wants to mess with lol.

    • +1

Yeah, already got couple other installers with pricing around $1800-2000 which seems much more reasonable compared to the original $3500.

      • Including equipment? If so, that is a lot more reasonable.

        • +1

Yeah, includes equipment too. Summary of quote below

Dahua 8 channel NVR To be arranged
          2TB Hard Drive NVR 1
          Dahua 5MP WizColor
          DH-IPC-HDW2549EMP-S-PRO-ANZ
          WizSense Camera

Labour and Cabling System Requirements 1
TOTAL COST INCLUDING INSTALLATION INC GST $1,750
          Extras:
          • Upgrade to 4TB hard drive = +$100
          • Add an extra Dahua 5MP WizColor DH-IPC-HDW2549EMP-S-PRO-ANZ Camera = $250 each
          • 22-inch monitor = $200
          • Uninterrupted power supply = $150*

          • +1

            @jaiballayya: That looks better.

            Uninterrupted power supply = $150*

Don't get the extras, you can buy them yourself and get better value for money. Also, $150 for a UPS? Must also be a small UPS. I run a Reolink 16 Channel NVR and Cameras on a 960W UPS which is $300 (or there abouts) and it last 250mins. $150 UPS is probably only going to be 300W ish and might not last that long.

Expect $150-$200 per drop (so, 4 drops - $800) - Edit: Had a few too many beers, there's only going to be a single drop for the NVR and all cameras will likely come through something like a 4 gang plate or some duct as you won't need to blast through studs for each one, it'll be on the cheaper side.
$600-$800 for a 4-camera system - especially if Dahua or Hikvision which are the cheaper brands that companies tend to use for "high end" consumer grade or "low end" commercial.
Upper ends of Commercial and I guess folks with millions go for Axis or Hanwha cameras.
House can depend on single/double story and tiled/tin roof.
I have looked for jobs doing the same thing in Perth and they pay around 20-50K/year less, so I assume labour is much cheaper there.

I don't do a huge amount of domestic work (maybe 2-4 jobs a year and mostly in and around Toorak or the Peninsula so take my words with a grain of salt.

Also, ensure it's cat6, I know 5e is fine for up to 10gbps at short distances and can handle high enough for it to not really be an issue, but installers should be sticking with current standards, who knows, the cabling might get re-used in the future and 6/6a is also much more durable. Cable is cheap af these days anyway

TL;DR: Been doing cabling and security for 5+ years following regs etc and wouldn't pay more than $1300.

Cameras quoted can be found for under $150 ex each and NVR under $200 ex

  • After viewing numerous CCTV downloads on a local Neighbourhood Watch Group, and noting that the persons shown had masks or hoodies obliterating their images, I wonder about the "worth" of CCTV Systems 🤷.

Cameras are intended to act as a visual deterrent, but in the above situation, that claim seems dubious.

So I wonder if cameras should be more discretely positioned, or perhaps be substituted by much cheaper movement activated security lights?

It depends too on what sort of cameras / system people have. There's plenty of el cheapo systems installed out there that are a waste of time and money due to the very poor image quality, particularly at night.

Then you have people that only install 1 or 2 cameras that can be easily bypassed when entering a property or the camera can be approached without even being seen and easily covered / removed if you wanted to.

I have 13 cameras covering the entire perimeter and they'll alert me when someone is on our property. 3 of the cameras capture car registrations (day / night) as well for both directions on our street before they even get here.

LED motion / flood lights also cover the entry points.
