Airtasker vs ServiceSeeking vs Hipages

All well established platforms, somewhat evolved and transformed over the years, are the following still holds true in 2024/2025?

  • Airtasker - small tasks, errand runners, repetitive activities does not require high level of skills. Sort of paying for time rather than skills.

  • ServiceSeeking - some trade skills required, certain businesses look for leads there. More like handyman, some professionals.

  • Hipages - higher mix of actual tradies, tends to be higher price, proportional to skills required.

  • Oneflare - Airtasker Pro designed to compete with Hipages.

Have only used ServiceSeeking with mixed experience, wondering if Hipages will be much same. Or any other new players worth looking into?

Evaluating as service seeker.

  • As a service provider or a client seeking services ?

    • As service seeker.

All I can say is verify the service provider’s credentials and qualifications. I usually just book trades directly now after being stung twice with airtasker.

  • I've used service central a few times, I dunno how it compares with your list.

  • I've used hipages numerous times

It's nice that they only match you with 3 service providers and you can manually opt to match with more if the first 3 aren't suitable or you're not getting any matches. That way you're not getting spammed with calls/messages.

What I found is the services providers generally want to contact you asap and get out to your place to quote you because I think you're more likely to proceed when someone's at your door ready to do the job at a price indication (at least it was for me)

Are they any better or cheaper? Probably not but I guess it takes the work out of having to google and research yourself

I've used hi pages for plummers, electricians, tilers, roofers, carpenters….

That was exactly what happened, I spent an hour taking photos, mocking up drawings and measurements, specifying preferred material and length of decking boards, even calculated number of boards required without using off cuts. We are after estimates with and without a picture frame, and potentially go wider with breaker board and picture frame.

Received a wave of calls in a span of 20 minutes, all wanting to come immediately, asking the same questions that I have answered in the listing, like they have never read it. There are 20+ responses I have since lost track who's who and what was exchanged over the phone. Then it just got cold, no one visited or sent any quotes, one week on I still don't have a ball park figure.

Now going back to click on the reviews, out of the 20+ responses, only one builds deck for a living, all the rest are general carpentry, there are a couple of handyman, a painter, and a landscaper. WTH a big waste of time.

So hard to find good tradies, not necessarily the cheapest, but one take pride in what they do. But this type of tradies don't look for work, work goes to them.

      • Hmm I've never had a flood of calls. It has always been limited to 3. Never more than 3 without my permission. But certainly agree with them wanting to come see you in person (to win your business)

        • Sorry for the confusion, that was with SS, not HP. Hence looking to see if HP is better.

I just don't like their tactic wanting to come immediately and then push to lock it in. The information provided is more than adequate to accurately calculate material cost, they just need to estimate time and labour cost remotely. It's going to be more than $10k, possibly more than $20k, so it's not going to be a first in best dress situation.

Also, a lot of the responses are just to say call to discuss. So it's impossible to quickly shortlist without talking to most of them to repeat the same information over and over again.

  • I've used Airtasker and HiPages. HiPages was good enough for getting 3 quotes from actual tradies. Still have to be careful and go with someone you get a good vibe from rather than just the cheapest. But good for sifting through something where there are a lot of options (I used it for a fence repair for example)

I'd only use Airtasker for fairly low stakes jobs. Moving furniture upstairs, gardening, small jobs etc.

  • I’ve used HiPages for various home services and found their pricing to be reasonable.

With AirTasker, I’ve had a broader range of experiences, but their service fees often seem quite high, which can inflate quotes.

In my opinion, it’s better to do the legwork yourself and deal directly with tradies, professionals, or service providers. This way, you avoid the additional service fees that platforms like these usually include in quotes.

If a business is well-run, they’ll typically have a decent website and basic marketing in place, such as some basic SEO. Many providers on HiPages or AirTasker often don’t have much of an online presence—sometimes just a minimal Facebook page with limited information.
