Warning - It wont let me edit anymore, but this is only for the Midnight blue version. The black version is the same price but it appears to be the lower 8gb 2023 model

Flip phone from grey import not a good idea

  • +4

    $500 and we'll talk

  • +1

Not sure how the warranty holds up for these imports

    • +1

it probably doesnt but Amazon still needs to follow AU consumer law.

      • +2

Does that also apply to Amazon US?

        • +8

yep, they operate in and sell to Australian consumers so are subject to Australian Consumer Law, even though the product is coming from overseas, the purchase is still made via Amazon’s Australian platform, which means ACL protections still apply

        • +4

If an item was purchased from amazon.com.au, Australian consumer laws are applicable.

          • +2

@CocaKoala: Any overseas retailer selling to Australia - not just one selling in Australia - is bound by Australian consumer law, according to the ACCC. The problem is it's usually too much of a hassle for Fair Trading NSW etc to chase after an overseas entity. Academics say this and so does the ACCC itself:

"When an overseas business sells products directly to consumers in Australia, the business must follow the Australian Consumer Law, including the consumer guarantees.

In practice it can be difficult to get a repair, replacement or refund from an overseas business if there’s a problem with the product or service, and the help Australian consumer protection agencies can provide is limited."

This deal is via the locally based Amazon and in my experience, the customer service staff here are pretty lenient with returns on stuff bought through Amazon US etc.

It's a different story if you buy it from a third party overseas though - I had a DVD player that I bought from a third party overseas seller on the Amazon platform, and when it died that seller refused to refund me. Fair Trading NSW chased them for me, but they said that the seller never responded, and they can't do much when that happens with an overseas entity.

I'd be very cautious ordering an overseas phone. Carriers are now using a whitelist to block phones:

We understand that you’re correct that the method Telstra is using to identify impacted devices is via the TAC (Type Allocation Code – the first 8 digits of the IMEI). The ACMA considers that currently this solution is sufficient to enable Telstra to block phones in accordance with the new obligations set out in the Emergency Call Service Determination. We acknowledge that TAC-based blocking will target all phones that have the same manufacturer and model, regardless of whether individual phones have been programmed differently. We do not consider that the new obligations in the Determination require telcos to individually test specific phones for compatibility with emergency calling on 4G/5G before blocking devices, so long as the model of phone is known to be generally incompatible.

Anecdotal evidence suggests Telstra, Optus & Vodafone are using different lists. It is a mess.

whoever decided this has got to be the stupidest mf ever.

imagine arriving here as a tourist and your phone doesn't work for emergencies

They cant hear you over the $$$

All of this, including the 3G shutdown was done to mitigate SS7 attacks, not just to annoy you

      • I posted this not too long ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/875211

MIL arrived, using Vodafone and it still was not working, not just for emergency, but even for basic register to the network. We saw her phone was an old Samsung A20 anyway so we ended up buying her a new phone here which worked immediately.

The bigger problem is that even some phones sold locally (years ago) are also apparently getting blacklisted.

  • +4

Bought this phone about just over a month ago and it's already having problems with a green line appearing. It's been in a case the entire time.

Just a warning for those considering it as I will be returning it, loved the form factor but just don't think the technology is there yet.

    • +2

Do you think it's got something to do with bending the screen?

      • -4

I suspect one of these answers:
        * AMOLED display. In the past, there's news about faulty Samsung AMOLED display also used by other phone brands. But it looks like this phone doesn't use Samsung AMOLED display.

        *According to google AI overview:
A green line appearing on a flip phone screen is most commonly caused by a hardware issue, usually a damaged or loose connection within the display flex cable, which connects the screen to the phone's motherboard; this can manifest as a faulty solder joint or physical damage to the cable itself, leading to the green line appearing on the display.

Key points about the green line issue:
        Hardware related:
While software glitches can sometimes cause screen anomalies, a persistent green line is almost always a hardware problem.
        Display flex cable:
This cable is a critical component within the phone's display assembly and is often the culprit behind green lines.

        Causes of damage:
Physical impact (dropping the phone), excessive bending of the phone, or even just wear and tear over time can damage the flex cable.

What to do if you see a green line:
        Check for warranty:
If your phone is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for a repair or replacement.
        Professional repair:
If not under warranty, take your phone to a reputable repair shop to assess the damage and potentially replace the faulty flex cable.
        Avoid DIY repairs:
Attempting to fix a green line yourself can often worsen the issue if not done correctly.

        • Sent mine to Motorola under warranty, came back fixed a week later

        • Pretty normal use out of mine as I opened it when necessary but only ever with both hands. To me if it's failing from normal use within two months there is a blatant design flaw.

I'll give it a few more years and hope for better local support before moving back to a flip.

    • +1

Let us know if you run into any issues returning it - Amazon US purchases should be straightforward, hopefully.

    • easy fix

  • good find, want one, but don't need one :P

  • I was so tempted by this phone a few months ago, but was a bit put off by the camera performance in low light/indoors. I also couldn't find a Peak Design/QUad Lock type solution for mounting on a bike (push or motor). Also, a bit disappointed there's no Qi2 wireless charging support, which promises a Maglock style experience for Android users.

    • Quad lock does not support any foldable phones atm.

I think its due to the way the case sits in which there are no lips on the hinge side of the body which means the case can easily slide out. Even Samsung official cases for their foldables come with adhesives to prevent sliding out.

In my case with Fold 4, i just stick the universal lock on a cheap case so i just swap the back cover before i go on a ride and on the rear of the phone, there are camera bumps which prevent it from sliding out

  • Compatible with local 4g/5g bands.

    compatible with Optus/Vodafone/Telstra whitelist?

    All-day battery life … 4000mAh battery

    ???

    • +1

It will certainly last all day as long as it's not on.

  • +1

I don't think it's a good idea buying a flip phone from international

    • white / black list
    • warranty
    • see comments above it'll crack lol

do yourself a favour skip it

  • Compatible with local 4g/5g bands.

Doesn’t mean it has the correct ca combos and carrier profiles for au carriers, speeds may be degraded compared to a local phone

  • +1

Tested the TAC with a sample IMEI on the telstra website and they've said the device will work.

Pulled the trigger thanks OP. Fingers crossed.

    • How did you grab a sample IMEI for the Razr+ 2024

      • You don't need the whole thing. Just the TAC (first 8 digits) which are all the same.

Found an ebay listing showing the box of the same model.

        • Found out whether it works yet?

          • @Extremophile: Using it now and it works perfectly,

            • @Wafflel: hey i pulled the trigger too on this one, mine does not work with vodafone, but no problems with optus and seems like telstra too, so just sharing my expirience just in case

  • Pffft it's no Motorola Moto E14 with a 5000mAh battery… /s
