a new release from QCY.
these were $69.99 when they got listed on Amazon AU less than a month ago until now.
now $59.99 comes down to $53.99 with 10% coupon ticked.

just know what you are getting, these are open "earcuff" style earbuds like Bose Ultra Open ($295 ATL). they don't actually block your ear canal so bass is on the light side but you can hear external sounds around you better.
(the end that goes in your ear actually leaves a gap, so it's not blocking outside sounds)

reasons to get these:

  • you want to let in more sound and have awareness of sounds around you
  • you want them to stay in your ears. they will stay in even when changing clothes, normal airpods style TWS won't.
  • they are more comfortable than normal airpods style TWS or in ear IEM style TWS.

reasons NOT to get these:

  • because they aren't blocking your ear at all, bass is on the light side (even after custom EQ in the app the bass might not be enough for you.).
  • because they let in outside sounds you need to turn the volume up a bit more, and when you do others can slightly hear your video/music.
  • no ANC (obviously).

Ok, short review for anyone interested.

The open ear design is great for 4 groups of people.

    1. People who don't like having anything in their ear.

    2. People who use iems and need to rest their ear canal

    3. People who like to share with different groups of people, including young kids.

    4. People who like to hear their surroundings.

I have had them for about a month and think they are great value. They aren't high end audio and I don't think can compete with IEM style tws, but for calls or to listen to podcasts or tvshows they work. Surprisingly people don't complain a lot about noise spillage but probably wouldn't use them in a super quite office.

Battery seems solid and seem to hold charge well. If you have any questions pass them over and I can try to answer.

one youtube review I watched basically said, for $295 the Bose Ultra Open's aren't worth it because there's not much of an actual difference in terms of function and sound.

ok might as well admit it.

it’s stupid I know but I didn’t want to reveal to ozb users I paid a higher price for these to get them early.

yes sound quality is “good enough” for me after using the custom EQ to raise the bass and completely lower everything else above that.

battery life is also great and as claimed I saw 50% left after 3 hours in my ears.

the touch sensors are at the back which prevents accidental presses. you can customise the combinations they do as well in the app which is great.

and the best part, they stay in your ears! have not had them drop once.

also one tip, they have a cute light purple colour in other markets. for some reason australia only gets black and white. 🤷‍♀️

maybe one odd thing I noticed, the volume can get really loud. I mean in quiet environments I barely use 20% to 30% volume. In a loud environment I was using 40% but I couldn’t feel comfortable using them any louder.

  • Glad to see open earbuds are getting more popular. These styles are what I use exclusively, can't stand iems in my ear canal.
I use the Huawei free clip and shockz bone conduction, pretty much have one of them on most of the day.
Now I'm waiting for Samsung and Sony to get in.
If you want Huawei knockoffs try sanag, the s7s is not bad, bass is too strong and the treble a bit muddy but for the price it's quite good. At least till more manufacturers jump in.

  • My qcy died in 3 months. Wouldn't recommend

    • tbh I have tried TWS from many budget brands and getting a pair with bad battery in the earphone was something that can happen on a budget.

the best thing to do if faulty is return them (which is why I post Amazon), and try your luck again.

it even happened to a lot of Sony TWS during covid because they had battery shortage and had to change to a cheaper battery supplier.

      • I have old sammy earbuds. They never died but the holes filled with crap and I can't get it out. Used for years

  • Excellent post and informative comments. Nice one OzB! 👏

My QCY T13 still impress after 2.5 years (and I have some nice high end IEMs and speakers.

    • yeah I have had occasional budget TWS fail on me, but returned with full refund without issue.

the ones that were good still working though. I have a pair of Taotronics from 3+ years ago, they still refuse to die (I will have to look up my order history I’m sure it’s been even longer).

the Taotronics battery lasts only under an hour though (down from 3 hours) so I use them when I know I will be taking them out quickly like in the morning. but it’s a waste to throw them out so I keep them as a back up pair. paid about $45 they were regularly $69.99 on Amazon so similar price to current QCY.

  • Hmm so many on amazon at $50-70 price range, dont know which to get
    Truefree
    Soundcore
    Tozo
    Spundpeat
    Soundcore

    • when you say $70 range Soundcore I assume you are looking at C30i.

don’t do it, it’s not clear in marketing but the C30i is not a flexible cuff (the connecting part of QCY is bendy silicone) instead it’s all rigid plastic, so it pinches your ear and is uncomfortable.

C40i fixes this and is flexible, but roughly double the price of QCY when full price and on sale.

soundcore seems to do this a lot recently they release a cheaper worse design model first , try to sell them as the new model. then release the actually decent model later so they can charge more for it.

out of the rest I have had good experience in the past with Truefree (great battery life, good sound, but no app support and bad BT range - 1 room away). Soundpeats is popular for awhile now, good feedback but usually slightly more expensive than QCY overall. recently QCY seems to be trying hard to compete in value segment, I recommend their recent models rather than everything they have on Amazon.

      • Thanks. Will try this qcy
I just wish the design doesnt have that bling reflective part. It makes it looks cheap

What do you think of this

Limited-time deal: Truefree Open Ear Bluetooth 5.3 Headphones, Wireless Earbuds with Earhooks, ENC Noise-Cancellation, Immersive Stereo Sound by 16.2mm Driver,4 Mics Clear Calls, 45H Playtime, APP Control(Black) https://amzn.asia/d/1WeD1pH

        • here is some comments on C30i vs C40i from reddit.

The c30i's were rigid and did not flex hardly at all. So, if you had big lobes they could ache after a period. The c40i's have a flexible center 'bridge' so they do not fit nearly as tight as the 30's. They include caps to make them fit tighter if needed though. Overall, they are a massive improvement in many ways over the c30i's, especially in sound quality.

I did acquire some of the 40i’s , impressive sound capability from them and they do stay put. Probably the closest thing to a decent sounding open ear headphone yet. One of the only ones I can put a winter cap on with and they sound even better.

Not sure they will stay with me as the ears do still ache after a few hours , but I’ve been using them with teams daily and like the audio experience.

if you want good bass maybe consider the C40i.

$150 right now though and recently soundcore always seems to be pricing their stuff way higher than it should be.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Nah i will try the one you posted first.. thanks!

            • @CyberMurning: the TrueFree you linked has different design. looks larger heavier, probably won’t be anywhere near as secure in your ear and also less comfortable. the only reason to choose Truefree would be for the long battery life.

charging case also looks a lot bigger, the QCY case is not that much different to your usual AirPods size case.
