  • Was told you're required to wear these now as an adult in still water unless you're anchored - that also doesn't include spotlock for those with an electric on the front. They basically want everyone wearing one at all times now in QLD waters.

That isn't correct unless you're on your own in a vessel < 4.8m.

New lifejacket rules starting from 1 December 2024

      Wearing a lifejacket is compulsory:

      • when alone or accompanied only by children under 12 years in an open boat less than 4.8m in length and underway.
      • during the crossing of a designated coastal bar in an open boat, as well as in any open area of a boat of any length, and on certain craft.
      • while boating between sunset and sunrise in an open boat less than 4.8m in length and underway.
*children aged over one year and under 12 years must wear a lifejacket when on an open boat or in the open area of a boat of any length while it's underway.

Yep you're right. For second I thought everyone had a shitty tinnie like mine…

You have until May 2025 to live life to the fullest. I think it's just warnings about the changes until then. You could always squeeze a mate in to pass you a cold can and drown a worm.

  • That recall is interesting thanks… I have a Marlin MK150 purchased from Anaconda, same as pictured in the recall, it's in the date range for the recall also (manufactured - 11/2021 - purchased 08/2022), but it doesn't contain that model inflator…

(not a fan of inflatables, I only carry one as a spare due to their small size)

Every rock fisherman should be wearing one too.

Black PFD sounds like a silly idea IMO. If you're using it for its end game you probably want to be as conspicuous as possible.

      The inflatable bladder isn't black

      • Correct. They are normally yellow.

When the NSW requirement for kayakers (sit in, those other things aren't kayaks) to always where a PFD I whinged and moaned like the big toddler I am and bought one of these. There is option to blow the thing up, with your own breath. I just wear a regular PFD these days, I haven't died of heat stress yet.

Govt must have forgotten vessels over 4.8m. can sink too, hey?

    • +2

The larger vessels are still required to carry them per passenger. The 4.8m length is based on stats for boats being capsized/swamped in enclosed waters.
