    Ah the hypocrisy.

As opposed to him who takes advantage of the elderly, uneducated and people who need interest free loans to by things at full retail.
Looking at you $300 monster cables.

Last time i checked the government gave him a huge labour subsidy

Harvey Norman chair Gerry Harvey has proposed a government inquiry

Sure Dodgy Gerry, but only if we as the Australian people can propose a government inquiry into the illegal practices of what he did with the COVID relief funds that were meant to go to the employees during the lockdowns but instead went into his pocket, and lets throw in an ATO audit while we're at it to ensure he's not misappropriating anything else…

But Ultra-Cheap Retailers Shein, Temu etc. don't fudge their accounting to claim JobKeeper and then refuse to pay it back.

  • +2

Kinda weird because they are not exactly competitors of his.

Also, "pariahs"? They are outcasts?? Or he wants them to be?

  • +8

The guy is a dead set vv@nker

  • +6

Temu don't pay taxes? Well they charge me get thanks to Gerry!

  • +8

    Temu - don't pay taxes.

Gerry - Use tax money to investigate why they don't pay tax.

Why don't you fund the enquiry Gezza? Or better yet, just give back the Covid bucks you didn't need.

Where professional bargain hunters taunt him for eternity.

  • He is correct about them but he can also do the same if he likes.

He prefers to open stores so he just needs to get over it

    • +2

He is wrong … Temu pay taxes here too.

The article in the link provided proves nothing. There’s no mention of Temu paying income tax in Australia and highly doubt they do

To be fair though, Gerry needs to pay income tax in Australia to get the franking credits he and his shareholders value so much

        • +1

Income tax … maybe not as the headquarter is located overseas anyway.

At least they employ people here to work in their warehouse. So, they have to pay wages, electricity, water, etc. Most likely they have to pay warehouse lease unless if they own the warehouse. So, the warehouse owner gets the money and have to pay tax.

They have vehicles to move the goods, unless if they rent the vehicles which is unlikely (cars & trucks). So, need to pay tax for the vehicles until sold. They need to pay for fuels too (taxed).

Does Xenophobia seem a comfortable fit with the rich these days?

Someone seems to have let the dogs out (and spread the rumour that them nasty foreigners eat them all up)

It is thanks to HN and Bernie Brookes (of Myers) lobbying of the Federal Government that we lost the GST exemption on imports under $1,000. All on the basis of unfair competition.
Mind you, when I went to a HN store and asked them to price match on an item I could buy overseas they refused, on the basis the imported item did not pay GST, and they did. I offered to pay the GST and they still refused!
Anyway, HN is just a self righteous and greedy billionaire.

  • +13

Maybe if he pays back the millions us tax payers gave him over COVID, we can consider it

  • LOL yeah let's investigate two companies operating out of Singapore and China. They will be happy to comply. He's like some poured lumpy mashed potato in a hotdog skin but made it extra stupid and old.

  • Personally prefer that we pay GST on imported goods rather than back then.

Yeah that sounds strange but if the value of the item can be obfuscated via the various discounts or the online retailers lack of understanding of GST it then passes through customs with little scrutiny because the package has the commercial invoice attached and they see taxes are all paid and complied with. Claiming your GST credits is very easy since you have a tax invoice under your store accounts, also means you can claim TRS and no one will be the wiser.

Compared to back then everything was scrutinised and often customs revalue things based on their approach (they have performance incentives to collect tax)

"The pot calling the kettle black"

Next week Gerry will be complaining about the cost of Electricity and how it is damaging his capacity to sell Electrical goods.

Anything I'd be buying from Shein or Temu I wouldn't be buying from HN anyway.

Mind you, anything I'd be buying from HN I wouldn't be buying from HN either.

I'd rather see an enquiry to where all those COVID dollars he got went …

Retail mogul tells consumers to buy stuff from him, and not from other retail moguls.

The Chinese think that it is perfectly ok for prison inmates to do a lot of the mundane work which supports the ( zero labour cost) model behind a lot of the ultra cheap goods. Good luck in changing this model. Jobkeeper was always destined to have problems due to the speed of implementation- remember the "pink bats" fiasco.

  • +2

So ulta cheap retailers that are proper, good caucasions for - OK
Ultra cheap retailers that are not proper, good caucasions - pariahs.
And I guess we then get add levies to keep this shappy competition away - making sure we continue to pay exorbitant markups to good, proper caucasions.

Isnt it a case of the pariah calling the pariah pariah…🤔

For context - recently in China retail priced the EXACT same goods as in Gerrys store at 25% of the cost in Australia. They are all theives….

We need an enquiry into why foreign companies don't employ people in Australia?

  • When your busniess model is failing, beg for the Government to do your dirty work.
HN were one of the first to break their departments into individual "entities" to get around shopping hours laws for "small business". Funny how now he want's others to play "legit".

  • As a HVN shareholder I just wish Gerry would retire and take his missus with him, They are embarrassing.

edit: who remembers when Gerry didn't understand the internet?

  • he is one of those blokes who needs to hire a Public Relations specialist or just stay out of the lime light

what he is 'trying to say' is it is hard for Australian retail to compete because companies like Temu arent subject to the same rules and laws local retail is subject too - he has been moaning about this for as long as i can remember [he isnt totally wrong but that is what a free market is so suck it up]

Thus, he comes off and often does come off as a bloke who is greedy and anti-consumer - which i have no doubt he is the entire Harvey Norman retail division was designed around ripping off people who dont know how to use google.

I dont blame people for 'not liking' GH im not a fan of the bloke but i do respect what he has/had built the Harvey Norman brand - im pretty sure he isnt 'too involved' anymore other then collecting dividends being a major shareholder.

he is your typical 'battle harden' business man who has 'totally' lost touch with ordinary people due to his success and wealth

    • What? So he wants all the benefits of living in a peaceful country, overseeing his race horses from his luxury mansions, but none of the responsibilities of good corporate governance?

Yep, he should f—k off to Florida or Epstein Island.

calling them pariahs that don’t pay taxes or employ local people.

"Currently, TEMU doesn't have an office in Australia, but it has a warehouse in Sydney."

News from 2023. Temu has a warehouse in Sydney, that means they employ people here and pay taxes here too …

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-29/temu-may-save-china-s…

  • I mean honestly how many local businesses don't employ local talent? Half of the customer service industry is offshore. Go after these guys then you go after any no no Australian online store. Give it up Jerry. You stooged us with the 10% get on imports, now bugger off.

  • Ohhhhhhh man thank you. Just given me an idea for my next tiktok. "Bring back COVID. Please. Bring it back. We miss it. It was so good for business."
