How do you check that foreign phones 100% work on Aussie networks these days?

    • +7

Maybe @scrimshaw knows? He posted a comment about this on a different model from this store before so I think it still applies.

      • Do not import any Xiaomi phones to Australia, at this stage. There's no guarantee it will work after the 3G shutdown, as telcos need to selectively whitelist devices for use with our networks. Buy from a local supplier for the best compatibility and ease of returns.

      As of 31 Oct 2024 -

As Australia’s 3G networks are being phased out, some Xiaomi Redmi and POCO users may experience connection issues on certain Australian mobile networks. This is not due to any compatibility issues with our devices for 4G or 5G networks. Instead, the disconnection results from new ACMA regulations effective October 28, 2024, requiring carriers to restrict devices that can’t support 000 emergency calls over 4G or 5G from accessing their networks.

As Xiaomi’s authorised distributor in Australia, we’ve ensured that all models we’ve brought into the country meet local regulatory and network requirements. Each of these products supports 000 emergency calls over 4G and 5G. We are working closely with Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone to update their whitelists to include all authorised Xiaomi models. Once this process is complete, customers will regain uninterrupted network access on local 4G and 5G networks.

If you purchased your Xiaomi device from one of our authorised retailers—including JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, Amazon Australia (not including third-party sellers), Mobileciti, or directly from our website Xiaomitech.com.au—since December 2023, you can be assured your device meets these regulatory standards. Full connectivity will be restored as soon as the carriers complete their whitelist updates. In the meantime, you may try to contact your carrier to request unblocking of your device. If you prefer not to wait, or if your carrier is unable to assist, please reach out to your retailer for exchange or return options.

Do you really live in Sydney Op? Seems odd to be posting this after everything that's happened.

Yeah $500 is way too much for me to risk on a roll of the dice personally.

        • +3

Agreed. Not gonna take this gamble!

Wow… Really? I do not trust any of these phone at the moment. I love the RedMi series of phones, but what guarantee dop we have that these are still going to be working after the first week or so of ownership.

Im going to neg this based on it is too risky for a $500 phone to know if it is going to get slammed into the useless basket the moment I turn it on. Just not enough information from thegovernment and telcos about what IS and what ISN'T going to be allowed into the country.

Happy to remove my neg if the store will accept full responsibility for blocked phones that the intent was to be used in Australia or if the governemt/telcos have gotten their shit in order and are no longer blocking phone because Gerry Harvey cracked the sads.

(Note: this is for Australain use only. If you plan on using this phone in other countries that would support this phone, I dont have an issue with the phone itself)

Imo it’s irresponsible to especially post an associated deal and not verify / offer assurance of compatibility. Negging to highlight potential issues as mentioned above.

  • +2

Negging as per above. Why would anyone buy when the rep can't give any guarantees that these phones will work. Insane proposition for a deal.
