The "Pro" in this 7200 = specific MediaTek customisations requested by Nothing

The 2a Plus released 6 months later (why?) has the 7530 Pro which is a tweaked version of this 7200 Pro

So this 2a with an average MediaTek SoC and only 30% off from launch starts being a deal from $299 down

Incoming Pixel 9a = first decent 5G Exynos modem ever
Incoming iPhone SE Gen 4 = Apple's first proper inhouse modem
Qualcomm = will respond to Samsung and Apple with mid tier Snapdragon updates
MediaTek = budget tier customisation for Nothing, cheap SoC's for India market phones and China tablets

    • u bum

The fastest Android chipset currently is literally a MediaTek, get your head out of your ass

      • -6

Snapdragon processors typically offer higher raw performance, especially in demanding tasks like gaming, compared to most MediaTek chips.

That is a given. If you want budget model to mid range sure. It's cheaper mediatek.

  • Was this phone also blocked during all the 3g switch off crap?

  • The only reason I didn't buy this last time was no esim.

    • +1

Same here….been using esim for years….cbf going back to a physical sim.

Other than that the phone seems to be a banger given the price.

  • +3

I did the whole JBHIFI pixel thing, but if that deal hadn't popped up I would have definitely gone with a Nothing Phone - it's co-founded by the guys behind OnePlus and Teenage Engineering - they know their hardware/software and how people hate bloat.

    • +3

Teenage Engineering isn't a compliment anymore since the consumer scam "Rabbit" they released.

      • Aren't they mostly just a design company

  • +2

would this be a good replacement for my elderly mom, she has note 10 and battery is slowly getting bad… ? She is used to samsung, so bit worried I will have to tech her few new tricks which take loooonnngggg :)

    • +1

This is perfect for her, it's the best at this price point. Android software experiences across manufacturers are as similar as they've ever been, it won't take much to adjust.

Also, having a flat screen is an upgrade over the note 10 from a durability standpoint.

  • +2

I've got a pixel 7a which has appalling battery life. Would this be considered an upgrade?

    • Sounds like the battery would be an upgrade. Camera might be a downgrade though.

  • How would it go replacing my S21?

    • Old post, I'm replacing my S22+.
It's very similar which is what I was after.

  • Besides the Samsung bloatware, does anyone have any experience with the Samsung A35 which is also $399 ($150 off at JB).
A35 does have an esim though.

    • +5

I'm not a TechNerd so no idea about the CPU difference but for me the Nothing has the lights on the back which would be awesome for missed notifications, or if you like your phone on silent a lot. Also I've never understood why glass backs became a thing, it makes the phone heavier & easier to damage.

      GSM Arena comparison.

    • +2

The Australian A35 does not have eSIM, only a single nano SIM. A55 is the cheapest Samsung with eSIM.

      • +1

Thanks for that info. I was leaning towards the A35 before your comment.

    • +3

I tend to avoid the A series. Samsung likes to put weak processors in them, so they don't cannibalize their flagship S series sales.

    • +1

Rocking an A35 here. Good thing about samsung is that the bloat can actually be mostly deleted.

Unlike say many years ago it was a total turnoff.

    • A35 is really sluggish and lags a lot after a year

  • can you turn off the system updates on this? the few android phones I've tried lately always force to update, no matter how much you are trying to turn it off.

  • Very tempting from my S20FE which runs out security this year…. but Samsung so solid for android but expensive!!

    • +1

Honestly I would look at something else, maybe the one on display at JB was knacked but it felt significantly slower then my s20FE.

The menus felt laggy and honestly the screen just felt cheap. Other then battery life it felt worse overall then a 4 year old $700 (correction, I looked up the receipt from 2020) phone

The Nothing Phone 2 felt nice, but for $1000 it should have been!

      • Yeah ta, not gonna buy

    • +2

My S20FE ($629 in March 2021) that I've been using for 4 years was slowly dying - super laggy, poor battery life, and the USB-C port wouldn't charge reliably. Wanted to stay in Samsung ecosystem but couldn't find anything that was as good a deal, especially as I needed minimum 256GB internal storage due to no more microSD card slot in the S series.

Few weeks ago, made the switch to the Nothing phone 2a plus (JB Commercial for $596 delivered). Super fast and functional, but defs missing some Samsung specials, e.g. the Samsung gallery app, clock app, camera app have extra features I can't find in stock google/nothing apps.

That said, a recent update to Nothing OS 3.0 really improved the UI for me. Gonna try making suggestions in the Nothing forums to see if any of my remaining qualms will get fixed.

Also, I always change animation speed to be faster in the developer settings (set it to 0.5x duration), so animation lag is minimal. Sad to be retiring my S20FE as it was truly a great phone. Wonder if a factory reset could have solved the lag.

      • Thanks for the feedback 😃

      • I am still holding onto my S20 FE, really tempted to upgrade!

  • +4

Nothing phone stepped into the market the same way OnePlus did. Once the ball rolling they'll become premium

    • Not here in Australia at least. Sales are pretty mediocre.

    • And the sooner at risk of getting banned unless they walk the Lenovo's path.

    • There are already hints that the Phone (3) will be a "true flagship". Unfortunate, but it allows for the best profit margins.

  • +1

    People pay $399 for nothing?

    • +3

      It's money for nothing
      and the chicks for free

  • Still rocking a flagship 2019 Oppo Reno 5g. Would this be much of an improvement?

    • +1

same! Crazy how solid it still goes but would love a software update

    • Kinda big upgrade

  • +1

Good price but no eSIM, I'm out

  • -2

Wow much better than Chinese EV deal!

    • -1

      Wont know until it explodes.

  • What is the night time cameras like for photos and videos? Also is there a light glare or streak that forms when taking a photo like the Asus Zenfone 9?

  • Does it have NFC support?

  • +2

Just noticed Amazon have the 'CMF by Nothing Phone 1 8GB RAM 256GB ROM' Light Green only for $296 (rrp $449) if anyone is interested? https://www.amazon.com.au/CMF-Nothing-Dimensity-Hardware-Cus…

    • +1

cmf phone 1 doesn't have NFC. You can't use Google Wallet.

      • +1

And once again Amazon specs are wrong, it says it has NFC. If anyone buys it they should jump on live chat & complain once they receive it, will most likely get some money credited to your account.

The only Aus review on Amazon is just complaining about them saying it has NFC when it doesn't.

  • +1

I really wish they had a pricier but better Nothing phone. Something with a camera that can play along the flagships

    • Agree mate .. they need a flagship chipset and latest Sony camera sensor

    • Lol then almost no one would go for it over a Samsung. Vivo X200 Pro and Xiaomi 14T are examples. Very few go for them here.

  • I wonder if it'll drop any lower this year.

I'm couped up for a while so I don't need a phone for now, but my S10+ is coming to the end of its battery life.

  • Which Samsung S-Series would this be comparable to? S21, S22 etc? Or not at all?

  • If only i didnt get an A35 for $99 new id be totally over this.

    • Well you could sell that for more than you paid so I don't see what's holding you back.

  • +1

$389 with $10 perks. Very tempting. Just smashed the screen of my Moto g84. Only 6 months old. :(

    • +1

I'm in a similar situation, been managing with a smashed screen on my Pixel 6a and with the $10 discount this is looking good.

      • 256gb model might be better value for money, I just hate parting with the coin. What are you thinking? Can get JB HIFI gift cards for another 2.5% discount.

  • How does this phone compare to Oppo A74?

Mine is lagging and acting up so i am on fence to buy this phone or hold out until Oppo A74 can't work?

    • +1

      This is much better

  • +1

still using old iphone xs, but getting sick of apple.
nothing held back 3 probably because they want to see what the others are doing on AI.
actually wouldn't mind moving to nothing.
they look like how iphone started, cheaper, sleek, simplistic.

  • +1

Slightly off-topic, but is it possible to make a purchase using gift cards such as this one?

There's a prompt for gift cards on the checkout page, but not sure if that's only for JB gift cards (which I suppose I can always buy those via Cashrewards or Shopback).

  • +2

Is this the best value phone under $400? I truly know nothing about nothing phone

  • Went to local JB Hi-Fi to check this phone and was surprised by store consultant reaction. She strongly advised me against buying this model. She said that buyers complain and this phone return rate is higher compared to other. I told her that online feedback on this model is quite good but she was still very negative. I thought she wanted to sell me a higher end phone but she offered alternatives that were cheaper (motorola and something else that I don't remember)..

    • +3

I always look at comments on youtube reviews of phones to get the best advice from actual owners.

    • Did she actually give any examples of why exactly people returned them?

    • not sure I put much value on a local JB dude compared to experts like us studying YouTube reviews by experienced full-time reviewers.

  • Any JB gift card discounts / promos?

    • +2

Cash rewards is 3% off and Shopback is 2.5% from what I could find this morning.

  • What's the equivalent of Google Pixel model?

    • which google pixel? why?
obviously not comparable to pixel 9 pro XL.

  • +2

I bought this phone last week and one of the volume buttons is already stuck, so can't vouch for build quality :(

    • Let us know how you went returning it?

  • +2

Amazing price and seems like a bargain but I wanted to point out that there seems to be a green tint issue regarding this phone due to potential hardware issues. Seems to not be to uncommon browsing through online forums - Nothing haven't properly addressed this issue yet, but I would just keep that in mind

  • +1

Just switched to this from an iPhone 11. What a great device for a great price!

  • +2

Downgrading from S22+, doing everything right so far.
Amazing hardware for the coin and processor is plenty fast for general use.

I have not tried real gaming but don't do much of that on my mobile.

  • +1

Switched to the 2a (12gb 256gb version) from the Moto G84 and I am stoked with it. It feels like an Android version of an Iphone, built so solidly and very snappy and silky smooth, and the camera is SO much better than the G84. Very very happy with the purchase.

  • $439 with $30 perks voucher.

    Might be targeted.
