According to this https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-G12-… it doesn't seem that bad. It can idle at 3.8 w and managed 17hours 49min on the idle test. Then again, its hard to say what normal usage looks like.
Was there an X1 carbon that was better spec'd for the price?
The gen 13 with the lunar lake processors have recently released, although much more expensive than this price. Should see much better battery life than the gen 12, although still only 57Wh battery. If you need a thinkpad, then this is a good price. Im willing to wait for a discount on a lunar lake laptop for battery life.
Thanks OP, got one. I travel a lot with a bicycle and this one seems sturdy enough and the OLED display would help outdoors.
Have the gen 3 and still going strong after 10 years (put in some new thermal paste and an 860 EVO). Worth every penny.
how can i tell if it is a touch screen?
Pretty sure it's not a touch screen. Great screen though.
Touch screen ones are labelled 2-in-1 (this is not one, unfortunately).
Hard to view the details viewing on a phone. Lenovo.
Ah that was quick, pop up told me it was out of stock and couldn't be added to cart anymore.
Great deal, if I hadn't just bought a Framework I'd be all over this.
can i ask how that is going and would you recommend over prebuild laptops thank you
I got the Framework 16 DIY edition, and I love it. I bought the RAM & SSD separately from Amazon as it's ridiculously over-priced from Framework. Bought a cheap - less than $10 Windows 11 Pro retail (don't buy OEM) license online & registered it in my Microsoft account (Microsoft support confirmed I can use it on unlimited devices & new OS versions in future. One at a time obviously). I'm not a gamer so didn't get the dGPU module
You don't need to be tech-oriented to build the DIY, virtually anyone could do it. They have great written instructions with a short video of each step. It took me about 20 minutes to build it going slow & methodical. Build quality is better than I expected & moveable modules line up well & are flush. Maybe I got lucky though.
The input deck is easy & fast to move modules around & reconfigure, which you can do without shutting down the laptop. So e.g I moved the keyboard from centered to left aligned, removed 2 LED Matrix modules & put in the numpad module, within 2 minutes while the laptop was on & running. They're all magnetic & snap in nicely. The expansion card modules are even quicker & easier to move or replace.
Been using it daily for about a week. It's a big laptop & relatively heavy but that was expected. My only complaint is the numpad doesn't use the keyboard backlighting. That's minor but might be annoying for someone using the numpad a lot in the dark.
It's expensive even if you BYO RAM, SSD & OS. You can definitely do better specs to cost ratio. Hopefully that will even out over time with upgrades, & personally I'm happy to pay a bit more to support a company big in the right to repair movement (also buying an iFixit toolkit). Gives me a good feeling that I built it too. I plan to use this laptop for a very long time by upgrading & repairing as needed. They have demonstrated form, been around for years now & the original Framework 13 has gone through 3 cycles of motherboard & CPU upgrades successfully. I'm looking forward to see what modules they come up with for the expansion bay shell. Already released a dual nvme module, now you can put up to 4 SSD's in this laptop (not including storage expansion card modules).
I'm happy with the purchase, definitely recommend over pre-built.
How much did you pay? How more heavy is it.?
@Raj09: It's modular so it depends on what configuration you choose. Just go to their site https://frame.work click on Laptops, choose 13 or 16, Select DIY version & click Configure. You can see the prices for all the configurations. Or instead of Configure click on Learn More to see all the details & specs.
Thanks for the review. I think my next will be a 13. I just really want a GPU in the smaller size.
@pcchristie: Great, I hope you like it. Yep the 13 is the better option for most peoples use case I think.
like you said your not much of a gamer but there isnt many options for GPU or external GPU connection for this laptop right thank you
@smeng: Yeah I know stuff all about GPUs. AFAIK this would not be a good option for people who want to be on the latest & greatest. More for people who want to be able to very easily keep upgrading GPUs without having to buy a new laptop, via the hot swap GPU module on the 16. Some gamers are pretty excited about that.
It's good to alert people to good deals however these will undoubtably just end up being sold by resellers on Gumtree, Facebook and eBay with the price jacked up. If the general public can't buy them because of these flogs then it's against the spirit of this site. Laptops, Alcohol, Vitamins, Shoes you name they have ruined it for ordinary people looking for a bargain.
Wut
I think they're saying it's better if you don't know about this deal, because letting people know know about this deal likely makes it get bought and resold at inflated prices elsewhere, so while you won't know the option to buy it cheaper exists, you'll still be less likely of buying this at a higher price elsewhere by not knowing you could have got it cheaper.
Nah i think he was implying that there are more resellers on ozbargain than actual consumers which is bullshit.
@dowhatuwant2: No that's not what I meant mate. But there are more resellers than you think on here. Just wait two weeks when they are shipped and received 90% will be for resale somewhere online. You may get one or two people buying for personal use (in this cost-of-living crisis who has much spare cash???) but like anything easy to turn over for quick easy cash most people who buy these are going to resell them down the track.
@GardenGnome: You are exactly right, since someone here keep posting lenovo outlet deals recently, I already noticed the pricing there not like before super cheap any more … Stocks there used to stay for few days before sold, now deal like this one, all gone in 30 secs, faster than stealing a car, just too many resellers here and took away chances for those who actually really buy and use laptops themselves …
Yeah, this is a nice concise summary of what I wanted to say!
The CPU naming is getting more and more complicated. What is a U7? Is that the equivalent to i7?
is macbook air m3 way better than this one?
Apple and oranges.
MacBook has the problem of being a Mac - which can be incredibly limiting for people who need a device for more than word and emails
Heads up, don't connect to internet when setting it up
Mine came with zip.co logo and would not allow a personal email, needed a work account
Have lodged a case for replacement
Same here. Received the zipco logo and didn’t know I had to not connect to the internet
This means it's enrolled for zip.co deployment - Lenovo will need to swap out the Motherboard to remove this enrolment.
Btw, a factory reset seems to have done the job. Lenovo didn’t suggest this option but I was playing around with the F1 screen after a force shutdown
Managed to use my personal Microsoft login
thanks! that worked
You’re welcome! I’ll still wait for the rep to call me back on Tuesday to see what’s the outcome. He did say I didn’t have to mail the laptop back to them which I suspect they could suggest the same solution to what I did
Just factory reset in the bios? that didn't do anything for me it still goes to the screen asking for a work or schools login.
F1 —> Security —> Reset System to Factory Defaults
That’s what I did to remove the zipco logo
@BargainsGrabber: Thank you @BargainsGrabber - this worked for me :)
Also FYI to anyone having issues with the webcam/IR cam; the driver on the support page (where you punch in the serial number) is no bueno. HOWEVER if you install the Vantage software/spyware it picks up the fixed driver for systems with Realtek Camera modules.
Battery life awful on these, only a 57Wh battery with weak Meteor Lake CPUs.
