  • How are Oris’ for a first watch? Are they comparable to Seikos?

    • +1

      Oris > Seiko

      • High end Seiko are not cheap and definitely comparable or close to luxury Swiss quality.

Marinemaster spring drive watches for example.

        • Who is buying a Seiko SALxxx as their first watch?

    • +1

Oris is great, but definitely 'luxury' tier so you might be inclined to baby them a bit. Their big crown pointer date and dive watches are signature models.
The Japanese brands like Seiko/Citizen might be better for a first watch.
I'd recommend checking out Teddy Baldassarre's Youtube to descend into the world of mechanical watches.

      • That's why I bought a second hand Oris Aquis, at 45% value of the RRP for this exact reason. I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy the watch since I would baby it a lot if it were brand new.

Plus, it took the hit already on the depreciation aspect, so it's good value now.

    • Hi, thanks for the question!

Everyone has their own preferences but we believe many Oris customers like the brand because the timepieces are high quality and are great value for the price point.

You can find out more information about the brand here: https://www.oris.ch/en-US?srsltid=AfmBOoq5T75X6-LGrRmWR_YpWe…

A Seiko would be a better first watch, quality is still pretty good and will let you know if you get into wearing a traditional watch or not. You can still get higher end Seikos like the 62MAS & Willard.

An oris could be good as an only watch but worth trying them on. I like divers sixty-five, the Aquis is pretty chunky and bling bracelet. I've had one but there are better Swiss options around.

Oris's RRP has doubled in 10 years and they screw you over with no third party parts & servicing (and requires sending away to Melbourne for 12 weeks). Resale is average as well but just sell it before 6y I guess. My Aquis was RRP $1800 at the time, now at least $3600 (I paid $1400 in 2010). Have a look at some other brands (but it's personal preference to some extent).

Sounds like you could research all the brands in general or just get an apple watch and don't take the red pill 😄.

      • I think you just described the Swiss watch industry in general. Everyone's looked at Rolex and the holy trinity with extreme envy and also wants that "double inflation" and "in-house service" money now.

Although Seiko hasn't been immune to out of band price increases either…

        • +1

Yeah that's a fair observation - some brands like Rolly warrant it (obviously still bloody expensive), a lot of others like Oris, Tag etc are increasing the price fiercely anyway. I know Seiko and Citizen RRP are still laughable but can always get heavy discounts without much effort :).

      • I bought an aquis 41/selita last year for sub 2k brand new from the ozb favourite, starbuy. An aquis 400 with in house movement/ten year servicing interval and warranty was recently in the mid to high 2s on either black Friday or boxing day specials. Certainly, deals can be found.

        • Yeah Starbuy have good deals, jomashop too.
Not that fussed about the new calibre 400, mine was running 17s fast per day so sent it back to joma. The 5 day power reserve is a bit misleading, forget the number of time to fully wind the crown but it was up there (like 200+ lol). I did like the smaller dimensions (got it on rubber, almost a bit too dainty at the clasp).
5.4k RRP is a bit much the sw200 is fine and proven. Actually they were $4900 not long ago so already $500 more.

You may be waiting a while. Look at the RRP, it's not even COSC certified is it? I'm not into skeletons but was interested and looked up the movement. I wouldn't buy it because of long power reserve (which would take a heap of winds), the touted accuracy could be hit and miss (I got a calibre 400 which was awful and returned it).

Wouldn't you get a kermit or the ProPilot-X Coulson LE for a lot less :P?

Seiko Presage SRPE19J $550 from you but $375 from Starbuy. Lol.

Some well meaning advice - this is Ozbargain, not Ozsupportyourlocalbusiness, no matter how unfortunate that is. You have a physical store in a Westfield, which means you have higher overheads, that is understandable. The same Westfield also provides you with very significant foot-traffic that online retailers don't have, and you are thus able to sell your products at uncompetitive but very profitable prices to in store customers who don't do their research.

In short - the audience you will find here is EXTREMELY price-conscious.

You should edit your post title and description, and include specific examples of watches where your prices ARE competitive (there are a few), and put the 40%/30% off sale in the description as an addendum. Otherwise all you are going to do is disappoint yourself, and disappoint us (your potential customers).

        • +1

          Hi,

Thank you for the advice! We do appreciate any feedback we get, especially as this is our first post on Ozbargain so we understand that there is room to improve from our end on how to advertise deals online. We will try our best to amend our post to fit your recommendation as soon as possible and we appreciate everyone's patience and anticipation in the meantime.

Like you mentioned, operating in Westfield comes with high overhead costs, but we always strive to offer the best possible discounts within these constraints.

We're always happy to discuss anything further via email too! :)

    • Yes one just has to google the watch you're interested in to find the best price. X% off isn't always meaningful. I thought the deal title has to list a particular item..

No point paying more than you have to. Perhaps they should price match if they want the sale and make new customers.

  • Not a bad price for Grand Seiko GMT Spring Drive. Chrono24 has new for around 7k from Japan so GST is around there.

Hey Rep - pricing isn't really competitive on quite a few items, Starbuy routinely has better pricing on Oris watches, with Aquis and BGPDs sub $2.2k, Diver 65's sub $2k for the 3h models. Watsons/Linda's/etc routinely has Seiko at 35% - 45% off.

A couple of examples right now:

    Oris Coulson 40077848786 - $4199 at Hardy Bros - https://www.hardybrothers.com.au/products/1wbc023-carbon-men… or sub $4k at Starbuy - https://starbuy.com.au/oris-coulson-mens-watch-01-400-7784-8…

    Oris Propilot X 11577597153 - you've got at $9.3k is $8.5k at Hardy Bros or Wallace Bishop - https://www.wallacebishop.com.au/products/2ebd010-oris-propi…

    Seiko SSK035K - $660 vs $554 - https://lindajewellers.com/product/seiko-5-sports-automatic-…

    Seiko SPB329J - $1520 vs $999 - https://watsonsjewellers.com.au/products/seiko-presage-sharp…

Hi, thank you for bringing it up!

We had another similar comment about our pricing and we wanted to clarify that we are aware that some of our prices are not as competitive as other retailers. However, this slight difference in the price is because we are a small business retailer with a physical store in Westfield Miranda and we aren't able to offer the exact same prices as a retailer that only trades online.

However, we are happy to discuss any further discounts via email and answer any questions there. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].

    • But hey — free shipping!

        Small wins!

It's great that you guys are starting out on Ozbargain. The comments section can be a bit brutal at times, but as long as you have a genuine deal when compared to other sites, you'll be ok. We all understand the costs involved in operating a physical shop and then having to compete with online only retailers. The issue is that not many people are willing to pay (much) extra for personalised service, as great as that can be. All the best with your business!

      Hi!

Thank you very much for the encouragement.

Definitely didn't expect the small backlash haha but baby steps - we'll take in everyone's feedback for future posts. As I mentioned in a different comment, now we know that we have room to improve on how we advertise on Ozbargain. We really appreciate your kind words and hope to post something better next time!

  • +1

Any actual deals? Best off listing a cracker deal in the title as an example. Up to 30% doesn't mean that much. Most Seikos I looked at are ~25% off.

40% off oris is at least what you'd want with the inflated RRPs. Likewise always aim for 40-50% off Seiko and citizen.

People should do a google search for the watch to see if it's a good price. I can appreciate bricks and mortar stores carry higher overheads but people are extremely tight and savvy on here!

    • +2

      Hi!

We really appreciate your feedback and have noted that we'll need to change how we list deals in the future. Definitely will be a bit of a pickle trying to compete with online-only retailers but we'll try to post our best discounts here! :)

      • No worries, it's always fun to look and may be something of interest. It could be good to pick a few popular Seiko models (for example) that you have heaps of stock of and make it hard for people not to hit 'buy' 🤣👍.
