My daughter is looking for an iPhone 14. I did a search online and this seems like the best price I could see for now. Roast me if it's not - same price at JB Hi-Fi - may be able to use discounted gift cards etc. I get 5x Flybuys points from Officeworks with OnePass, which is about $24 worth of points back.
iPhone 14 128GB $967 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ OnePass/ C&C/ In-Store) @ Officeworks

maybe just rich dad
She works, paying for it herself. Last three she bought were 2nd hand, upgrading from a 10.
Keep buying second hand. Especially with so much of these in the marketplace. You could even get iPhone 15 Pro at similar price.
This doesn’t really seem like much of a deal
Dude it's a whole $80 off the Apple Store price! Such a shame there is a limit of 5 per customer so you can't broden the amazing price this is!
You should be paying that for a iPhone 15
I totally agree! But Apple being Apple…
Lol still charging $1000 for a base model 2022 phone?
Apple sucks price wise. I got sick of cracking screens so I now only buy $250 Motorolas yet it does everything I need it to.
A 15 could be price beat against Costco (1139.98) for $1082.98. Then use gift cards bought at 10% off to make it $974.68.
I don’t think any one price matches Costco do they? She hasn’t pulled the pin on the 14 yet
Officeworks do
Sometimes they want to see your Costco card though. Depends on where you go and staff memeber
Kids having Iphones these days?? Crazy times
To be fair, they said daughter. They didn't specify or imply age. Could be a kid in like year 8 or 9. Could be a grade 2er. We don't know.
The price is (profanity) insane regardless of age tbh for a phone in it's third year of availability. Frankly a grand in general is about ten times as much as I'd like to pay for a phone. I miss 2009.
what did y get for $100 in 2009?
Fair few phones, 100 was more or less the limit you'd pay for a bog standard phone (not a smartphone Blackberry type). Nokia 2600 Classic was my fave around then. Got plenty of phones for $5/$10 too, got a Samsung flip phone from Coles for $5 in early 2012 when I needed something quick. But I mean moreso I miss 15 years ago when you'd get laughed at for spending an arm and a leg on a phone.
In the same way I could have spent more then, I could spend less now. For $5 it got me calls, texts, Facebook, and Mobile Foxtel. And a (shitty) camera. It did everything I wanted in a phone then. Did you know that 9 times out of 10 a $100 phone will do most things things most people want these days too? Wanna doom scroll TikTok and your socials? Done. Wanna play a match three game while taking a dump? Done.
500 is the limit. Pay anymore than that for a phone and you're just silly if it's not a tax expense, or for something to do with your profession (content creation, photography, etc.), or a fancy ass gift. And 500 is still more than you should. My Moto G54 is still going hard as shit, 300 full RRP, 150 on sale, fantastic phone. RIP in pepperoni.
Did you know that 9 times out of 10 a $100 phone will do most things things most people want these days too?
So what’s with pining for 2009?

@TheDukeOfNukem: i can only recall folks getting sideyed for using a mobile on th tram in th 90s
laughed at for a phone..?
are y in gradeschool?
@0jay: Did y even go to school?
@TheDukeOfNukem: oh dear
@TheDukeOfNukem: I think it's silly to take your own personal thoughts and apply them to everyone else. Just because you don't care if you've to a good quality screen and camera, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. Moto G54 has an LCD screen and video recording maxing out at 1080p/30fps. Deal breakers for me personally.
Just like buying a mattress, you spend so much time with this product that I think its worth it to get a quality device rather than cheap out.
@ScruffTheJanitor: I think it's silly to take your own personal thoughts and apply them to everyone else. Just because you need a 4K megaOLED panel that will make your battery last all of 20 minutes and a 60/100/whatever FPS camera that will get bonked down in compression when you send stuff over Facebook to anyone anyway, doesn't mean everyone else does. iPhone 14 has a price tag of a grand three years after release and no finger print sensor, deal breakers for me personally.
Just like buying a mattress, you can shop around and get something good for a decent price rather than just buying the biggest expensivest thing they have in stock.
@TheDukeOfNukem: Glad to hear you're enjoying your G54. I just couldn't get into it.
@sunday9987: Despite the comment above I just wrote, I'm not actually riding it's dick that hard (or hating the iPhone that hard either), but curiously, what didn't gel for you? I like the feel of it, everything's snappy, the NFC and finger print locations are great, camera is a bit poxy in the wrong lighting but I leave flash on 247 and stupid as that sounds, I end up with a pretty decent photo most of the time.
My first phone was a 3310 that I paid $100 for on an optus prepaid Sim card. This was in 2004
@itsmoe: Nice one! Don't say "prepaid Sim card" around me though, you're giving me war flashbacks to paying for everything with credit.
I found it hard to get the 256GB Pixel 8 that was on sale recently, $878 is $300-$400 more than what I have spent on mid-range Sony's up until recently thanks to the 3G network. I'm forced to buy something akin to PlayStation priced rather than Nintendo due to form factor considerations.
Prior to this, I had returned to an HTC One M8, before they exited the market altogether and I would have still kept using my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge had the battery not died suddenly without warning in its 4th year of usage.
Exactly, she’s in her 20s. Not that that’s anyone’s business.
You can spoil her a bit more I reckon, not my business but saying.
lol
No different to parents that buy their kids expensive shoes and other premium clothing
Every generation is to blame for the next generation being softer
You're not wrong and all, but why are we dogpiling on the guy?
They've got a kid in their 20s, they've likely got their own money, old mate being on OzBargain is probably the person their family turns to to find a deal. The daughter was likely in the boat of "hey I have X amount to spend on a phone, what would you recommend?" and then we landed here. Even though I wouldn't pay a grand for a phone, I wouldn't judge anyone else for it, I bought a piece of shit MG3 last year, I wouldn't judge someone for buying a Tesla or whatever (okay, maybe Tesla a little, but you know what I mean).
I know right! Imagine my 20 something year old kid wanting to buy her own iPhone! Ludicrous!
+$173 for the iPhone 15: https://www.costco.com.au/Electronics/Mobile-Phones/iPhones/…
+$313 for the iPhone 16: https://www.costco.com.au/Electronics/Mobile-Phones/iPhones/…Anyway, why not just buy an iPhone 13 for $787 if it's for your children? The difference for them is insignificant: https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/apple-iphone-14-vs-a…

Great debate
I have a 12, is the 13 much better/faster? I do find it can’t keep apps in memory when I’m multi-tasking
13 has the same amount of RAM as the 12. My 13 will keep some apps running in the background but sometimes when I open safari and I have too many apps open, it’ll close everything else. Doesn’t get to the point where it bothers me yet.
14 has an extra 2GB, although less bandwidth hence a very slight performance hit in some very specific (gacha gamble brainrot games) scenarios
Nice, thanks. I think I’ll probably just wait for the SE then, looks to be pretty good.
It’s so annoying when I’m on a live chat, switch tabs and come back and the page refreshes…having to queue up again. Most websites keep your existing chat but some don’t
Because she’s in her 20s and she can buy it herself. She just asked me to research it.
If you’re able to find a 15 Pro or a 16, she will potentially get more long term value out of it due to the support for Apple’s new AI stuff. Particularly the base iPhone 16.
As others have said, if she’s able to wait for a new iPhone SE that’ll likely have the A17 Pro chip in it that supports the AI for under $1000, that’d be a better buy. No confirmation about that one yet though.
But 14 has satellite rescue assistance no?
Rumour has it the 2025 SE 4 will be based on the 14. Newer internals etc and should be under $1000 ($800 SE 3). Supposed to be out in the next couple of months for anyone able to wait.
100% this, was about to write a similar comment. Might even be a bit less, I think it's $500 USD, so after GST that's still under $900 AUD.
When I was a kid I got a jumper or a t-shirt for my birthday. Now my nephews are getting ps5s and $500 cash yet I'm somewhat glad I didn't receive much. Makes you appreciate money.
Same, high 5.
Show Costco price to Officeworks with additional 5% price beat.
I'm in my mid-40s and own my own house. But it seems like most teenagers have a better phone than I do. I have a refurbished, 2020 iPhone SE with cracks in the screen and about 30 mins battery life. Cost about $220 two years ago.
If it's just got 30 mins battery life I seriously think you may need to consider a new phone!
Maybe you could use your $300 voucher to buy a phone that can be used?
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841247
Or perhaps too busy spending more money on PC's that are better than most adults?
Maybe you could use your $300 voucher to buy a phone that can be used?
Already used it to buy a CPU for this:
Or perhaps too busy spending more money on PC's that are better than most adults?
You're probably right. The money I've spent on this never-ending PC build could have been better spent elsewhere. But at least I'm gaining a bit of knowledge about computers, as this is the first PC I've built.
It might be a good deal. You however would be better off getting a second hand or refurbished. 900$is a lot of money even for someone who has been working for 20 years or less than 2 years. The phone prices don't make sense. You can get an oled motorola for less than half of the price.
The 14s on marketplace aren't exactly cheap either. Many sellers want $700 upwards.
Ah well then yes. Still those prices are through the roof. Apple made sense when you had no alternatives to turn to.
True, I'm hoping the used market prices will drop soon so I can pick one up cheaper.
This is really one of those situations where if you're already burning a grand on a mediocre, outdated phone, you should spend the extra $300 to get the 16. Huge camera and CPU upgrade, and an extra 2 years of software support will make it last longer at the other end of its life.
If you can still find a 13 for sub $800 on clearance, that's a much better buy.
Under the hood the iphone 13 and iphone 14's are near identical. the 14 was panned for this when it released as it was basically a slightly updated 13 sold for the same amount.
If you can stretch it, then the 15 is a wortwhile update since it's effectively 2 generations of chip ahead of the 14 (the 14 has the same chips as the 13) plus the updated front camera/island.
If money is concern, then get the 13 and put the 2-300$ saving towards something else.
why 14 with lightning port? wait for 15 if you can
Lucky daughter!
My kids just received 12's and are very happy with them :).
