Timex Marlin 40mm Automatic Watch with Acrylic Crystal A$242.50 Delivered @ Timex

Timex had a sneaky flash sale recently that seems to still be going. Maybe they’re running some models out? Anyway, the standout is this Marlin Automatic in 40mm. It ticks all the mid-century design boxes, right down to the acrylic crystal, but with a modern movement (which I think is a Miyota 8000 series). I bought one of these from Watch Direct and it’s really satisfying my desire for vintage styling, and at this price it’s a no-brainer.

(If you prefer a quartz then this Q 1978 Day/Date is down to $177.50 but would be subject to the $20 shipping charge as its under $190.)

Get yourself a tube of Polywatch off eBay for under $10 and you won’t need to worry about scratches on the crystal, either.

  • The Q 1978 is very cool. Too bad the green dial model isn't part of the sale, otherwise I would've pulled the trigger. Great looking watches.

  • That is a beautiful watch. Bit of a chunky boy though.

    • Surprisingly, it doesn’t wear that big. You don’t notice the height of the crystal that much, and without a bezel and the slim sides it looks & feels like a sub-40mm in the wrist. I haven’t weighed it properly but I would not at all be surprised if it came in under 100g.

      • I just checked and it's actually the same thickness as my current HR steel. Withings HR steel is now 7 years old but still working fine. This is the first watch I've seen that matches it's dimensions and also looks classy. How are you finding the watch?

        • Probably by clicking “go to deal” above.

I’m really liking it. Despite people complaining about the Miyota 8000 having a noisy rotor I honestly don’t notice it unless I purposely hold it close to my ear and shake it. Accuracy is acceptable, certainly no worse than any other Japanese movement around the $200-$300 mark, and at least I know should it ever need servicing or replacing it’s widely available. Legibility is good in most lighting conditions with dark hands on a light background; if I had one complaint I’d say the lume is poor. The supplied strap is a nice, thick leather, and the holes are neatly spaced so I have comfortable adjustment to suit my 7 1/4” wrist. It’s still breaking in after a couple of weeks, and since it has quick-release spring bars it’s a doodle to swap out.

At the ~$400+ price point you often see it for I would not recommend, however a mid-$200 price makes it a very attractive buy.
