Home Undersink Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Options

Hi OzBargainers, with all the forever chemicals and PFAS in the news recently and having three kids I was thinking of installing a kitchen Undersink Reverse Osmosis Water Filter at home for drinking and cooking purposes.

I was looking at some options listed in the poll, which all have metal storage tanks instead of plastic like some of the eBay options such as SHEILD.

Any idea which RO system would best fit for purpose, low maintenance, and ease of finding standardised replacement filters? SE Qld based if that helps, cheers.

Options:

  1. Watercircle 5 Stages Undersink Quality Reverse Osmosis

  2. Aqua-Pro Slimline Deluxe Undersink Reverse Osmosis

  3. PSI-021-4S 4 Stage Reverse Osmosis Under Sink Unit

  5. Water filter world - Compact Reverse Osmosis (smallest footprint for those with small undersink)

What are you trying to achieve? I thought QLD got the best tap water.

Get rid of PFAS as we live near Amberley airbase.

Edit: Just read your link, I don't think Brisbane water is supplied by Isaac Regional Council‘s Glenden Scheme water treatment plant.

I thought QLD got the best tap water

Nope, that was just a elaborate joke…

      • Do you use a RO water filter too? Any advice?

        • +3

          Nah, I'm in Melbourne.

Our water doesn't need any filtering.

  • Get one with a re-mineraliser. So definitely not a 4 stage one, but I think even these 5 stage ones don't include it. The 6 stage system from Watermark does.

Improves taste and health of the water. Bear in mind processed food and even our veggies and fruits have lower mineral value than they did years ago. When you filter water to take out the bad stuff you will also be taking out much of the good stuff in it, a remineraliser adds back the good stuff.

We got this one https://waterfilter.com.au/products/aquaco-5-stage-reverse-o… which appears a bit more expensive, but it has the items in it you want as a guide, I think they can be found at a cheaper price elsewhere.

    • My budget is $400-600, plus installation another $300 tops. Yours looks to be too pricey sorry. Just after clean drinking water, the adults take multivitamins every day or so, so don't buy into the alkaniser/mineraliser stuff.

      • I think one of the problems of not remineralising the water is that it is more alkaline, and messes with your copper pipes.

        • +1

But the RO water is piped straight into the storage tank for drinking? Doesn't go through any copper pipes if thats your concern.

          • +1

@xdigger: Yes I guess that is the case. I have been looking at the whole house ones recently. Even so, if the water is alkaline enough to dissolve copper is it really good to be drinking it? Idk, but something to consider I would think.

        • It's not more alkaline by definition, it's neutral, pH7.

        • If you have coffee machines, there needs to be a certain amount of minerals in the water for the boilers. There are sensors in the boilers that use the minerals to measure if the boiler is dry or not.

      • Definitely something will be better than nothing so yeah still a good idea to go ahead, you might even be able to add the extra bits later if you are still interested anyway. TBH I was surprised to see how much they've gone up, we got ours about 5 years ago and it was nowhere near what people are asking today. Guess it is like a lot of things though.

        • What's your setup and annual filter change costs? Cheers

How do you know that the people partaking in the poll actually know anything about the options rather than just clicking on an option for the sake of it (like me)?

    • Yeah fair comment. Here's hoping the experts will chime in at some stage, cheers

      • +1

The expert would say there is nothing wrong with tap water in Australia, but it sometimes has a funny taste due to minerals/chlorine, and that won't kill you. But you rather get info off the keyboard experts :)

You've motivated me to choose one by random. Thank you.

    • I always pick at random.

  • ohh good topic!! thanks for the info very helpful

    • Agreed, learning a lot

Hi op, I've found PSI Water Filters good to deal with over the last 11 years, still have our original unit. Filter change is yearly which you can DIY, replacement filter costs are reasonable. I'd suggest to give them a call to discuss options to suit your requirements and answer any questions, I've found them friendly and helpful. Fit for purpose, the 4/5/6 stage would all be ok IMO. If you can stretch your budget a little, I'd suggest a 5 stage unit, for example https://psifilters.com.au/collections/reverse-osmosis-unders….

    • Where are you getting your cheap replacement filters? Are they high quality and not knock offs?
Any thoughts between . Aqua-Pro Slimline Deluxe Undersink Reverse Osmosis and the PSI-021-4S 4 Stage Undersink Reverse Osmosis, both sold by PSI?
      Thanks

I get the replacement filters from PSI also. I'd get the PSI-021-4S from those two, costs slightly more but takes standard filters which are slightly cheaper.

    • I've used PSI filters for over 10 years to provide water for my marine aquarium and my CPAP machine. They're reasonably priced and great to deal with. They source quality products. I can't fault them in a field that seems to have plenty of quackery and shysters.

I'd be getting a pump and the TDS flow meter with cartridge replacement timers. The rest I wouldn't worry so much about the brand as long as they're standard 10" filters and RO membraine.
Brisbane I'm only getting 25-30 psi town pressure the pump jacks it to 80psi and the filters are meant to work better a higher pressure.

all the forever chemicals and PFAS

What about airborne ones, are you planning to wear a face filter as well?

    • +1

It's a bit hard to do much about that. A water filter isn't a terrible idea though.

The issue is, where do these filters go when they're disposed of? How do they deal with the contaminates? Are the filters also going to find a way to pollute the soil, air and water? I'd like to know the whole life-cycle and responsibility of these products in chain.

I have had PSI undersink water filters in various houses and units for many years. Highly recommended.
I strongly recommend calling them for a 'chat'. They have been honest and generous with their time and skill for all these years.
It isn't important where they are based.
They are so relaxed and friendly you'll half wonder if they want to actually sell anything!

Why do you need to take multivitamins. Is t that a scam in itself?

Why do you need to take multivitamins.

      Health reasons.
