A4/A3 Printer Recommendations under $500

Hey guys, just after any recommendations on an A4/A3 printer.

Scanner /copier would be good too, fax not important, print accuracy is important, I don't need some crazy ppm or anything, will be primarily for construction plans but with the odd office/home job every now and then. Don't really want anything too expensive as it won't be used every day (500 max).

Don't want a brand that has DRM or any of that weird modern printer stuff

  • print accuracy is important

term that usually used in 3d printing, how do you define that?

    • I want lines to be straight, not jagged as if I'd need anti aliasing. Printers are probably pretty good nowadays, last one I bought was over 10 years ago

Well just get a Ecotank as @jv mention.

I pay a nice old gentleman named Geoffrey to write out or sketch anything I want to print.

He’s a little slow so it turns out to be around 0.1 pages per minute for text or much slower for pictures.

But he works only for a cup of tea, teabags are 6 cents each so quite cost effective. He also doesn’t have much going on in his life since Martha passed away so he’s pretty reliable. Also a good chat

  • Could get an A4 laser for your heavy printing and an A3 inkjet photo printer for your occasional large format printing. Print on Canon High Resolution paper to get really high quality results.

    primarily for construction plans

Think you need A3 and also proper scaling to make sure the plans are proper scale. Unfortunately you won't tell unless you print then use a ruler to check it is correct.

A3 laser will set you back a lot of money.

If you go inkjet like (HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e A3 Wide Format All-in-One Printer) the problem is any moisture and your plans will smudge which is not very good for going on site with.

An A3 printer at that price would be costly to run, like HP.

I would go an Epson WF-7830/7840 given the budget for A3. I used a WF at work which was headed for Ewaste from @2017, till 2023, using near empty ink tanks that was destined to be recycled. I only used it for the odd photocopy, as I had a laser attached to my work PC.

But as @jv said, Epson Ecotank.
I've been using one (that was destined for ewaste 4-5 years ago) at home, and after swapping the paper feed mechanism with another unit, is still in use at home. I passed it onto my partner, who gave her 7 year old ecotank to her mother. I purchased an updated model last year on Amazon, just so I could claim some deductions. Regrettably A3 will double your budget kin an Ecotank, but the running costs are like having an EV at home, and using Solar.

Decent paper for plans will help, and A3 will no doubt cost more, and not be easy to get(off the shelf).
