Greenies Dog Treats 50% Price Increase

Mars Petcare Australia which owns dog and cat dental treats brand ‘Greenies’ has increased its prices by ~50% this month.

Back in. August 2024 Amazon AU was selling $46 (10% less for subscriptions) for a 60 pack of Petite Sized Treats. That’s now increased to $69 and that same pricing is reflected across PetBarn and other retailers as the RRP, with a few budget pet retailers around the $59 mark.

That’s insane price gouging from Mars Petcare. Who would have guessed a Wadonga based business had input cost inflation to justify a 50% increase!

  • There will be a recipe somewhere online to DIY something suitable, or ask your vet for a 'natural' (I mean, not manufactured) option

  • My Poodle loves her Greenies.

I was thinking of trying Whimzees but they're not that much cheaper :(

42c (costco) vs 54c Amazon Greenies.

    • same. all dogs are crazy then they see greenies

  • Greenies are manufactured in USA. Blame the poor AU$

Going on what's 'going on', nothing "ex USA" is worthy of consumption. Not even for dogs.

  • Have a talk to your vet about options.

For our cats our Vet recommended we go from Greenies treats to the Hills Science Dental care food. It is a lot cheaper, is a more complete food and my cats love it. They think it is a treat.

Colour me surprised that your vet recommended Hills

They are paid to recommend it.

      • Just offering a suggestion. The alternative is working for us.

They are paid to recommend it.

No, they're not. The two big prescription brands (Hills, Royal Canin) have vet exclusivity but there's no kickback.

    • Sorry i meant to say Royal Canin. We buy it from Pet Stock.

      • mine eat royalc since born but they are expensive i am thinking to change it to something else cheaper (now 3 years old)

  • Greenies for tooth care is like eating a peppermint lolly.

Wasn't worth it at the old price and certainly not at this new price.

The profit margin on this must be insane

No, it's not. More misinformation. Like any other dental treat like dentastix or even the off-brand ones, it's just a gummy and abrasive to mechanically debride teeth as they chew. There's no added sugar. How is that a lolly?

        Cool story.

The best thing you can do for your dogs dental hygeine is to brush their teeth. Eating a treat that costs almost $1 per use is not very effective in comparison.

        • but mine doesnt like people touch her mouth/teeth/head

We buy the bulk bags of Dental Treats from Australian pet treat company. $13.30/kg vs $60.00/kg for Greenies.

The quality of them has been really good and they are better for their teeth than the soft Greenies style treats.

We have 4 small-medium size dogs so buy them in bulk and cut them up into appropriate size lengths.

    • hmm someone should tell them to do "special promo" for ozb members - many would be interested

    • Amazing, thank you!
Do you have a referral link that I can use to join? DM me if so.
I will keep an eye out for discount codes.

      • Where do you see referrals bonus exists ?

        • I don't, so was hoping they would have something that an existing user would know about

These “dental treats” for dogs are absolute marketing scam.
Contrary to what you would think, vets get very little training in nutrition. They are going to sell you whatever brand of crap they are getting kickbacks for selling in the waiting room.
Best thing for cleaning your dogs teeth is a raw bone with some meat on it. Depending on the size of your dog, anything from lambs ribs to turkey necks are ideal.
Barking Good in Ivanhoe will have anything you need. If not in Melbourne talk to local butcher

The amount of ignorance in this thread is astounding. Vets don't get kickbacks for selling greenies or dental treats. It's not prescription food. Get them at a pet store or buy online. But sure, it's all a marketing scam.

Their statement about getting kickbacks for selling stuff isn't wrong though.

You think Hills diet is in every vet "just because" ?

        • I have only seen vet diets for illness at the vet.

I usually order from PetCircle for pet supplies. Just checked their price and it's at $53.99

    • combined with new user promo, if still exist. last i remember is $30 off cap or $20..

  • Clear Dog Treats. Their specials/bundles require a large outlay but are good value.
