Sell or Store Toyota Yaris?

Long story short I have a Toyota Yaris 2012 with 220,000 k's on it.

Rego ran out in September but bought a new car in 2023 so was only keeping it until either my brother took it or my partner. Battery has now died. Partner will want a first car soon but doesn't have to be the Yaris but similar hatchback is okay.

Was wondering should I sell the car as it is? Car sales or to a car buyer or should I get a tow truck and keep in storage until partner can register it. Trying to avoid council sticker on the car.

tow truck and keep in storage

Would have been cheaper just to keep the rego up.

CarSales instant offer will give you stuff all. A private buyer will screw you down because no rego and needs new parts.

    Pick your poison.

    • Lesson learnt. Looks like I may have to blue slip it or accept the lowball probably 4k offer from a car buyer.

      • $4k for an unregistered, 13yro hatch with 220k doesn't sound low ball to me!

    • Vehicle is ineligible for instant offer.

      • Even the online wholesalers don't want it. Depending how long it will be until your partner needs it I would list on marketplace for $5k as is where is. Expect to be low balled. Take the $4k and invest until your partner is ready.

      • I'll take it off you for $499

    Keep old car

    1. Is it a Toyota Camry, or another classic car

    Yes. Keep.

    No. Offload.

This is all very confusing, you have been keeping it for your partner or brother, and now your partner will want a car very soon, but you want to sell it instead?!

I mean, pick a path and stick with it.

    • Trying to decide if I sell it to help partner buy new car.

streamline it. a battery is cheap. fix it for your partner, u wont need to deal with haggling and the hidden secrets of another 2nd hand car

      • Put a new head unit in it with CarPlay, something with a bright screen and good reviews. Make it feel like a newer car.

If your partner has never owned a car before then they can do a lot worse than running a 2012 Yaris into the ground. Could get another 100,000km out of it.

If they have never owned a car before aka driven much, then a 2012 Yaris is a great banger to start to learn!

    Is this still available?

  • Just register it?

The last two cars I have sold I researched similar listings on car sales and marketplace to find the median advertised price. I then put it out for $2,000 cheaper to friends and family. Both sold quickly and easily, it felt good to give someone I knew a good deal and I didn't have to negotiate or waste time with any clowns.

How long till your partner needs a car? Are we talking 2 months or 12 months?

Realistically for the cost of 6 months rego and assuming the car is in reasonable mechanical condition, it'll be far less hassle keeping it.

    • within a month or so

        You're having a lend aren't you?

Has it been a good, reliable, low running cost car? If so, get a battery and renew or re-register it. If not, sell it.

I'll give you 2k for it
