Microsoft OneDrive Family Plan or Google Drive?

News of the out of control fires in LA and also the fact we are in bush fire season has made me think of having cloud storage for my precious family photos and videos. Currently I have a few physical hard drives (backups, backups of backups), but if there was a fire, it would be all gone.

What would be the best solution assuming I have a TB worth of files to store? MS Family plan ($179/year) or Google drive ($125/year)? I like the fact that MS Family gives up to 6TB vs 2TB for Google and that I can get MS office as well.

Also, are there any discounts available for either? The previous deals are all expired.

Thank you :)

    think of having cloud storage

Why? Too hard to grab the backup HDD along with passports, licenses, cash, jewelry, etc?

      3-2-1 backup rule

      • Yep, there should be one out of the system and on-site somewhere, along with one out of the system offsite …

Might not be anybody home when a fire hits, and/or roadblocks inward

Post it all on Facebook. They back it up for you

Too easy. Just leave one off site. Eg. At the office

Bummer if the cloud servers were in LA.
    Off site seems OK solution.

    Backblaze

    • I couldn't see what the storage limit is, do you know what that is?

    • +1 for Backblaze.
They are unlimited and allow you to backup unlimited amount of usb hard drives as well forever.

    Microsoft 365.

yes, even though it is more expensive, i do like the idea that ms office is included. i know there are free ones like WPS, but i still feel most familiar with ms office.

  • Get a google pixel and free unlimited original quality back ups

  • I've been experimenting with the 1 tb free plan from terabox. Haven't had any issues. I'm not sure if it suits the OP but just letting y'all know it exists as an option.
BTW there are umm…? Non playstore options for it on android that have ALL the paid options.
    Enjoy…. Maybe?
I just checked their site and they have the 2 tb plan on sale atm for $41.88/yr or $3.49/month.
    Cheers.

  • It’s so easy to backup photos with Google drive on iPhone.
If Microsoft onedrive is cheaper and can do the exact same thing I would prob go with that.
Google drive is just getting far too expensive.

  • Is OneDrive photo syncing not that great? Is it not automatic, meaning you have to open the OneDrive app and leave it open until the photos sync? Is Apple’s $14.99/month storage plan the best option, especially since the whole family can share it?

    • I'm not sure about OneDrive photo syncing, but I find iCloud photo syncing is good. I just move my photos from iCloud when iCloud starts complaining that it's out of space.

    • OneDrive syncs in the background fine on both iOS and Android. You don't have to open the app to initiate it.

  • Microsoft 365 Business Basic is $9 per month and gives you 1TB storage.

  • buy 10TB hdd and give it to your parents/mate at another house. one off cost.

  • I enjoy the google photos app and it's ability to search faces and places so I'm paying for Drive. I wish there was a good alternative to Google though

  • M365 provides an easy integration with phones and laptop/desktops (either Windows or Apple; can't say about Linux). Google's integration sucks (or at least it sucked a few years ago when I had to make the same choice).

Another product with good integration is Dropbox (I use it, but up to free limit).

    • Dropbox is actually the original and the best - but this is OzB and it is the most expensive, so that rules it out
