4GB Ram!! Come on aldi , its 2025

  • +18

    HD (1366 x 768) should be illegal in 2025.

  • +8

Doesn’t state the CPU but it’s probably a N100 if you’re lucky or a J series more likely.
With 4GB of ram despite the price it’ll probably be e-waste.

Even a refurb dell with 8th gen intel will be better than this.

    • +2

      The paper catalog said N100

  • Hahahahahahahah 4gb ram .

  • +5

This product is dead on arrive with that amount of ram.

The only way you could salvage this product is by installing linux.

  • +6

I lined up this morning for the school shoes. It was like a pack of Hyena's going in for the kill.

  • +5

you're better off buying an ex demo 9th gen intel from Metrocom..they have a tonne of deals on here for lappys for 180-250 bucks

  • +1

ive never really got under the hood in a laptop before (built several PC's though) - should the ram be fairly easily upgradable?

    • +5

Probably soldered to MB and no extra socket.

      • damn thats kinda sucky

        • +1

depends on the model, AI says:

Whether a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 14" can be upgraded with RAM depends on the model:
          * Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 1-14AST-05: This model has a standard memory of 4 GB that is non-removable.

          • @Russell Dupsumtucka: Make sure to double check directly on the product page as well. I've had some flaky results from chatgpt comparing Lenovos recently especially around whether the RAM was soldered or SODIMM.

          • @Russell Dupsumtucka: even there is upgradable, the CPU, which is probably N100, only support single rank memory. Sad :(

      • +1

        Yep, it's soldered.

  • +2

Windows 11 S mode ("shit" mode, or this computer "Sucks Mode")

    • -1

will require a rebuild with a proper Windoze version, if it even allows it.

      • +2

Don't really have to rebuild, just need to unlock S mode (free - if following standard instructions you'll need a Microsoft account) and it becomes the standard Windows, lots of the entry level laptops now come in S mode, but it's not that great as most schools want extra software installed that's not available on the Microsoft Store.

        • Runs a little slower when you unlock it, and its very had to swith back and requires a reinstall

  • -2

even at $99 i would still contemplate the purchase

    • Hell yeah, I would too.

  • +7

    Proper expensive e-waste

If you want to steer your kids away from STEM, this is the one

Shout out to the Lenovo AU product manager who hoodwinked the Aldi buyer with this POS

    • Probably my ex boss who works at Synnex (A Lenovo distributor).

      • How are the plans going to sell the 5090 in Aldi?

  • I'd rather spend my $300 on this.

    • Decent specs for price. No mention of the condition of the battery on this laptop?

Also can't see which one of the three Warranty options this unit has?

      • Product is in GREAT CONDITION, this classification is reserved for device that will show evidence of heavier use that will include scuffing, heavier scratches, dents and chips on external surfaces, wear and tear will be visible on palm rest, keyboard and touchpad.

        • +1

Sure,…..I did read that far, still no mention of the battery.

  • +3

With all these sh\t specs $299 is not a bargain …

  • +3

Perfect gift for anyone you really really hate, or yourself if you're a sucker for punishment

  • I'm not even sure if this can handle YouTube or email. Chrome and Outlook might crash.

  • Please stop falling for Aldi’s marketing. Most of the stuff they sell isn’t a bargain.

Through years of clever marketing (and A Current Affair info commercials) they’ve convinced a large portion of the population Aldi = bargain.

It’s the same technique Kogan uses.

    • +5

The food is a bargain if you need stuff that's not half price at Colesworth.

      • -6

I’ll happily pay a bit more for the convince of:
        1) Click & Collect
        2) Scan & Go
        3) Self check outs with Conveyor belts
        4) Deliveries
        5) Stock availability checking online/app
        5) Them having everything in one store compared to Aldi where they don’t have a real bakery or BBQ Chickens

Shopping at Aldi is like going back in time to the 90s. I’m sure that suits the boomer ‘cash is king’ dinosaurs, but not me.

It’s also not that much more expensive when you:
        1) Compare home brand products instead of brand names that Aldi tricks you into doing
        2) Make use of Everyday Rewards 10% off shops.
        3) Use fuel vouchers
        4) Buy in bulk when there’s specials
        5) Use Everyday Rewards $10 rewards

        • Wrong community. OzConvenience is over there. True OzBargainers will strive for a bargain.

    • -1

You're falling for Coles and Woolworths marketing.

Aldi is absolutely cheaper for the same products just in different packaging.

      • -2

Aldi is absolutely cheaper for the same products just in different packaging.

Oh come on. You can’t believe that Aldi is the “same products”. Aldi’s products are the same quality of Colesworth’s more “premium” home brand lines. Slightly better than the cheapest homebrands, but not the same as actual brand names.

Compare Aldi’s peanut M&M knock offs and tell me their the “same product”.

        • Funny you mention M&M's because an 180g bag price at Aldi is regularly $4.40 and at Coles and Woolies they are sold for $6.

          • @Ryanek: Try Aldi Soy & Linseed loafs. They're the best. That's the only one my kids will eat.

            • @ChairmanMeow: Soy & Linseed?? That's a truckload of phytoestrogens. Even if you have girls, that's a sure way to anticipate their puberty.

              • @wisdomtooth: That's the least of my worries. Surely kids are not hitting puberty earlier these because of eating truckloads of tofu and edamame… It's the highly processed food that I'm worried about.

                • @ChairmanMeow: Girls, not kids in general:

Puberty Starts Earlier Than It Used To. No One Knows Why.

Some girls are starting to develop breasts as early as age 6 or 7. Researchers are studying the role of obesity, chemicals and stress.
                  NYT

Sure, fake foods are #1 culprits. And contraceptives in recycled water 2nd. And all sorts of endocrine disruptors in plastics and non-stick coatings (including tetrapak and cans!) 3rd. But topping all that with concentrated doses of phytoestrogens can't be good. (Tofu and edamame are not to blame; the tofu fermentation digests the phytoestrogens, and no one eats that many soybeans one by one in edamame).

        • Oh come on. You can’t possibly believe that brand name products are always better than homebrand ones!

(And btw, Aldi sells brand names too.)

    • +1

Aldi products are definitely a bargain, especially with the local warranty.

That doesn't mean all Aldi products are good products. For example this laptop is technically a bargain, but not for the use that most people want it for.

      • -1

Local warranty isn’t that great compared to Amazon’s easy returns.

        • Amazon is mostly direct to manufacturer big brands and aliexpress products.

I think you understand the space Aldi plays in.

    • Whoa whoa whoa don't come in here saying AldiRRP isn't a bargain. The collective get upset because the deals are "limited" and that justifies the price no matter what.

  • +2

eMMC storage = long wait times and death.

"Noo God. No. God. Please! No. No! No!! NOOOOOOOO!!!"

  • This prob one of those e waste 2cm x 2cm full soldered crap

  • +1

This is more of a torture device than a computer. It is like selling a car with a 1-litre fuel tank. why

  • That monitor is not a good price at all, what the
We paid $99 for an LG one with the same specs recently

  • From guessing this seems matching the laptop's spec

Lenovo Slame 1, 3 series don't have sodimm slot for past few gens, so no ram upgrade unless DIY.

  • +2

    Good deal in 2015!

    • +4

I dunno… I got a Lenovo E320 back in 2011 for under $400 and even that had an i3 CPU, and a proper version of windows.

      This deal actually…

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52204

Hell, even the 10" Acer netbook I bought in 2008/9 feels like a better deal (6 cell battery lasted 10hrs… was great for my post grad studies).

      • Haha and I thought I was exaggerating when I said 2015.

        I got some crappy dell laptop with a 1366 x 768 screen for $300 around 2016 IIRC.

  • These type of deals are quite sad to see really. They prey on the parents that don't know about technology and think they are getting a good deal for a new laptop. I'm the sort of person who is happy with 8GB RAM and a old processor but this is an absolutely ridiculously underpowered laptop to be sold in 2025.

    • I noticed a Pentium laptop at Harvey Norman for $648. I didn't know they still made Pentiums.

It's predatory. They know that battlers are a big part of their customer base and they are not only flogging landfill with this junk but are doing it to the people who are least able to afford it.

      • They're forced to afford it bc schools require it. That's the demand they're fulfilling; it's a back to school item.

  • +1

Aldi has a "Full HD" bubble on the image - even advertising it wrong

    • Even the marketing guy assume it's Full HD… like who on earth will manufacture 14" HD laptop in 2025.

    • maybe if they connect it to another display

    <phoebeOhNo.gif>

  • 4gb and the emmc is the bottleneck

    N100 is quite capable.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/1avedhc/intels_ne…

    • N100 equivalent to i5-7400, but way lesser power consumption

  • I see people negging and criticising the deal, but not offering better alternatives at this price level (some offered used ones, ok). Fact is that schools force parents to buy laptops to their kids nowadays; it's a requirement, not a nice to have. So the price level is aimed at people who wouldn't otherwise be buying their kids a laptop at all.

I mean… Is it expensive for what it is, or is it just "not good enough"? Pretty sure that for doing school assignments it's ok, no?

    • Yes. For normal surfing and homework it's fine.

My bro in law is still using i5 5th gen without SSD and 4 gig ram, which is worse than intel N100.

He only used it for banking, surfing and excel. (Work related)

I'm still using the X7 z8750 …. Only 1 app at the time, crawling badly… But I like it for it's portability. If there is a tablet with N100 for 299, I would grab it. Surface go 3 is using N100 and it's 699 or more

But if you could get those with SSD/ NVme as minimum, I would think it's ok for school purposes
