You can ask the same thing about many movies franchises. For example, when did they start taking the piss with Fast and Furious?
The movie industry is not what it used to be for many reasons.
I thought it was a nod to the orginal cheesy movies back in the 80s
We watched it. Kids enjoyed it. Didn't take it too seriously.Yer I did enjoy it still but from the first Godzilla movie Hollywood made to now is a big difference.

Have you watched anything else in the "universe" they've created?
They're all nothing movies when it comes to script, character development, story, etc, but you get big monsters smashing things so what's not to love?
That said, the Monarch TV series is alright. Still a pretty terrible script but they at least tried on having a story and got a really great cast.

Godzilla Minus one and black and white version are the best. Like the Monarch TV show tooGodzilla Minus One isn't part of the monsterverse, Toho licensed Godzilla to Legendary Pictures to make the monsterverse films, but they also do their own films (like Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One and a bunch of animated ones). Totally different set of films.
There's two upcoming Godzilla movies, this one should be great, this one will probably be terrible
