Not really. Apart from Dan and BWS everywhere else it is less than 200 which is the normal price these days. Around 170 would have been an ok deal as per OzB history.
Don't think anyone pays inflated rrp for these Japanese whiskies.

  • Why are these more expensive than e.g. Scotch 12 y ones?

    • +5

      Hype?

    • +3

From what I've been reading, it's mainly due to limited production. The distilleries can't make enough to meet demand at the moment.

      • +5

International popularity in past decade, these used to be like $50? maybe $60??

        • +4

Probably even $30. I was buying yamazaki 12 for $60

    • It's how they're made. I'm not sure how exactly this whiskey is made, but Japanese oaks are inherently rarer and more expensive, so it cost more to make the same stuff.
Also rarity of the alcohol themselves.

      • +5

Sorry Awesomise, you are not awesome here. There is no rarity, It is a blend of both malt and grain from different distilleries with several different casks used - American White Oak, Sherry and Mizuna casks. This is an extremely overpriced NAS whisky, that is a nice easy drinking dram at 43%. You can buy this in the states at just over $100 on sale

        • You're sort of right but Mizunara wood along with hinoki is very expensive.

Japan doesn't have as much land as UK or the states to grow these trees either

          • @KnifeEnthusiastBoi: Yes Mizunara is a rare cask , but with the young Hibiki's they sit for such a short maturation in them that is probably more marketing than than anything else. You can buy a whisky cheaper that is aged longer in a miz cask if you want ti try for tgat light coconut, honey profile. The sherry and white oak overtake any subtle flavours it brings through on the Hibiki. So yep agree the Mizunara cask is more expensive and 'rare" as they say the wood is best at 200 years.

Supply and demand. Too much hype for supply to keep up. These used to be 100aud in Japan/duty free 10 years ago.

    • More sought after and in limited quantities. This is more the inflection of supply and demand.

All the good ones I have liked have risen tremendously compared to when I first discovered them.

Hibiki Harmony (this) price I discovered it in 2015, $120~, in 2025 $180

      Yamazaki 12, similar story

      The Balvenie, 2015 - $80, 2025 - $130

      Blantons Green Label - $50-60 (2020), out of stock or $120 (2024)

This stuff is better to invest in than stocks lol

  • It's been like that since Nov last year. Thought really hard but decided not to buy it.

Just don't buy this at this price, it is such a terribly priced whisky it hurts my brain. And the fact this a NAS blend on both malt and grain.

    • 43%
      • Blend of 3 different distillery's (malt and grain)
      • 5 different casks used

It is a very easy drinking whisky and not bad either but then so is Jonny Green, which represents much better value for money.

There is so many better whiskies at this price point, where this would sit at the bottom of the list

    • +5

      I agree
I lived in Japan 10 years back, before Japanese whisky started winning global awards and the hype train started rolling, I could drink a beautiful Nikka Taketsuru 17 at $50ish a bottle. That was amazing value.
Now you're looking at ~$1k for a bottle, it just doesn't make any sense at that price. I had a couple of bottles left and some hibiki 17 that I sold at auction figuring I could buy 10 bottles of $100 scotch instead which will be sorta on par and diversify.
The global hype has ruined Japanese whisky value, even for the Japanese.

    Remember pearl harbour my friends

Iirc, and you are a member of Costco, my local Costco is selling for $178

  • -1

Go to Japan and buy them for $50 AUD instead

    • +1

Was in Japan, you can't buy it at that price.

    • +1

back then as in a decade ago. yes.
      exxie there too.

    • In Japan right now and this is ballpark the same price as what it sells for in Japan. Pre-covid price was around 100 a bottle but clearly price still going up. Agree with the sentiment that price now is driven by hype and for the same coin you can get better stuff

      • Nah, about 13000yen in Japan atm

  • +1

Totally not worth it at this 'bargain' price

  • +1

This is not worth the money. If you want to show your "baller" status. Sure.

Pure drinking, it drinks like a sub $100 whiskey. Closest i can relate to is prolly Johnny walker gold.

For the similar price and easy drinking but with character, Glenfiddich 18 small batch reserve.
