Hire a car for the day and just buy cruise fees are best value.

Probably all full… NZ gets busy this time of year.
You need to book weeks in advance to get the good cruises (after lunch). It's pretty hard to get there before lunchtime if you're driving because there are so many places to stop and the scenery is so stunning, you will keep stopping to look at the views. If it's a bus + cruise tour you're wanting, they're probably mostly booked out seeing as it's summer. I'd prefer to drive than take a bus because you would be pretty sad if the bus didn't stop at all the amazing places along the way. Keep in mind, you can drive to Milford Sound and enjoy it thoroughly even without a cruise. There is mind-blowing scenery all the way, and right at the end where the cruise ships leave is quite amazing. Plus there are all kinds of places to swim in crystal clear water.
