Are there really this many couriers?

I see a fair amount of cars on the road with the sticker “courier” on the side. Often they’re obviously in use as a private vehicle (e.g. stopping with family to go to a restaurant). I have always assumed that actual couriers place these stickers on their cars to avoid getting ticketed for parking in loading zones (assuming that dropping a package off counts as unloading goods). Is this correct?

I have often wondered if non-couriers sometimes place the courier sticker on their private vehicle to access loading zones. Anybody heard of this?

A "courier" sticker wouldn't entitle a vehicle to parking in a loading zone.

There is also a LOT of couriers. It's a job many people can access and the demand is huge.

Of course they could still get issued a ticket and asked to prove that they actually had a job in the area. OTOH ticket inspectors might just not bother issuing tickets when they see it. If it doesn’t have that benefit then why even put the generic “courier” sticker on there? It’s not advertising and has no legal benefits to my knowledge.

Maybe I am naive to the true number of couriers out there.

      • If you think there's ever a situation where a parking inspector won't double check an opportunity to write out a ticket, or you think a sticker can save your ass, you need to get out more.
If there are desperate dicks who think it's a good idea to 'pretend' via a sticker, to save a few $$ ,don't lose any sleep, the court of nosy public justice will deal with the ones the parking inspector misses.

    • Depends on the state.

Victoria allows you to paint or otherwise affix a courier sticker on the side of any motor vehicle or motor bike weighing less than 3t, which enables it to park in loading zones, provided it is picking up or dropping off goods.

There's no register, and parking inspectors would rarely try and verify that a person in a loading zone with a courier stick affixed to their vehicle is actually in the process of picking up or dropping off goods.

    Hello,

Yes there are, you'd be surprised how many people are signing up for delivery jobs as a side gig to survive in Australia. I am one of them.

In order to get a magnetic sticker, one can assume they got it officially when they are hired. I mean, I don't think anyone can just ask for a magnet sticker just cause they want to be dodgy and park in a loading zone. The risk is too great and the sticker doesn't make them immune getting a ticket.

Speaking on behalf of NSW road rules, only eligible vehicles can park in loading zones BUT…. there is also the other concern with eligible vehicles parking in loading zones when they're NOT on their shift and abusing the sign just to park there just cause they have an eligible vehicle. The amount of delivery drivers I have spoke with have admitted parking in loading zones off shift cause it's easy parking and no one will question them.

In saying that, a sticker doesn't make their car an eligible vehicle to park in loading zones, it's just a possible deterrent to parking inspectors to try be lenient and not give them a ticket.

It’s just a generic “courier” sticker on the car door which I’m referring to. Presumably it’s trivial to get one online. What purpose do they serve? Just for loading zones right?

& yeah when I worked in a truck loading/unloading goods we used them all the time for loading up on lunch. Never got a ticket.

      • Load up your back seat with messy damaged cardboard boxes ( and no sticker required) .Officials will automatically assume you are an APost contractor.

  • haha anyone putting a courier sticker on any random car to park in a loading zone (without the appropriate eligible loading zone car) is a dummy

  • Stick on courier stickers under $10.

    Magnetic ones under $20.

Both are a lot cheaper than a parking ticket.

  • There are a lot of them using private vehicles. Download the Amazon Flex app and sign up, congratulations you're now a courier.

  • I'm buying a 2nd hand parking inspector uniform and getting a Parking Inspector sticker for my car door. I take bribes.
