Only using prepaid SIM card for 3G Internet

So I'm a 17 year old that barely uses the phone. I'll probably receive calls and text people every now and then. I currently have a prepaid optus sim card that's on turbo cap. I just realised I should change plans now.

I've found a way to send text messages for free through websites such as http://www.freesmsmate.com.au and smsglobal. I figured if I could just use 3G on my phone, I could access these websites and communicate with my friends through this way and it would save me money.

My question is there a particular option to make 3g without calls/texts as a staple. Also, which carrier or plan should I switch to next?

How much are you spending on the turbo cap? It would help to know for comparisons and stuff.

Take a look at Vaya: http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Mobile

It uses the optus network, and for $11 or $17 a month you get plenty of data and included value. The $17/month option also has free texts (pretty sure unlimited) so you don't have to bother with those rather rubbish online sms services (at least from my experiences, they're a massive hassle).

Edit: it appears the optus offers seem to be a minimum of $30 (not sure if you're on this or not) for pretty rubbish amounts of data.

    • I've been on this plan for years now and only realised now that I should change. I'll recharge $10 every now and then whenever I really need credit. The Vaya option seems good. $7 a month. However, I prefer just recharging whenever I feel like it without worrying about losing a certain amount of money per month. If there's nothing else, then I'll have to consider the Vaya option. Thanks

  • 3g without calls/texts

So you are looking primarily at data sans the cliched rubbish. Predated Woolworths Mob 5Gb x45d would be the natural leap: consider +2gigs extra relative to other alternatives, cost 17/m off special 9/m on discount see below. Haven't found cheaper than 2.40/Gb 3-6hrs voice +thin branding meaning in essence access to OPTUS user website facilities.

Kogone flat rate 25/month looks the next most interesting but @$4.15 GB is still way out there.

1] $15 off When You Purchase Woolworths Mobile Sim Card, Recharge and Fuel in One Transaction

    2] Kogan Mobile Plan $9.99; $29; $79; $299 'Plans' Available

  • if u don't call much then the tpg $1/month is great. includes 50mb data, use that for whatsapp and u can text for free. calls r pretty cheap too, 10c a minute I think.

  • How about savvytel.

I am not a big user of my mobile, and I have been with savvytel for years now
    Its on the Optus network.
Cheap call rates, compared to the major telco's
Credits do not expire if you choose the "smarter and prepaid" option.
Mobile Broadband options too.. not sure how the rates compare, as I do not use it, but maybe its worth checking out
