with ai noise suppression condenser microphone are more usable, but if you can afford it, go a dynamic if you're looking at doing voice work specifically.

i do a lot of instructional stuff, and since getting a rode dynamic mic ive gotten a lot of comments on the quality of the audio. this is more expensive: https://rode.com/en/microphones/usb/podmic-usb?variant_sku=P… but you get a 10 year warranty, and is australian made.

alternatively this is a good older dynamic broadcast mic : https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235883316270?_skw=rode+usb&itmme…

for $100 2nd hand you get excellent noise rejection.

    • What dynamic microphones can be used for work video calls without having to have them so close to your mouth (can be put further from the camera)

      • Geez getting negged for asking for suggestions?

        • I'm also curious as to your question, if you find a microphone that doesn't sound like ass, pick up sound from a speaker and works well with teams/zoom, hit me back with a reply :P

          • @Xetrok: Yeah, i did try a condenser like Blue Yeti X and it didn't sound good and could easily pick up noise. I bought new on clearance and when i sold 2nd hand i only lost $10.

I tried a Fifine dynamic and it sounded good but i had to put it so close to my mouth. Luckily i bought from Amazon so i was able to return it.

@meong: yeah that's how dynamic mics work, close to the mouth.

condensor mics are more sensitive, but will pick up more sound- but can be further away.

ive seen some use a shotgun mic for off camera use.

but in general a big fan of rode. the sun will fry all circuits, except rode mics- i swear.

              • @StorminNorman: i might try looking for a budget shotgun mic… any recommendation?

                • +1

@meong: the issue with shotgun mics is they generally won't be USB. Rode's one: https://rode.com/en/microphones/shotgun/ntg1 is XLS, which then increases the cost.

i have found though- if you are running a PC with a gtx graphics card 2050+ the noise suppression should work enough with a decent condenser mic in a moderately quiet and carpeted room.

If things like bird noises, keyboard tapping, other people making noise, tv on loud in another room etc aren't a problem then a condensor mic will suffice for thigns like skype meetings and general audio.

its only for recording where you want a clean background where dynamic mics are vital.

but in general, stick with rode, 10 year warranty on everything. theyre slightly more expensive but they don't (profanity) around and last forever.

Rode shotgun https://rode.com/en/microphones/shotgun/ntg1 (XLR connection) probably looking at $300 cheap, then the xlr crap to plug into. (i just saw this one that is usb: https://rode.com/en/microphones/on-camera/videomic-ntg)

I'm a USB person, sure it mightnt have the final 5-10% shound quality, but 100% easier. I have this https://rode.com/en/microphones/usb/xdm-100 which i got for $275 and it's magic (also doubles as a self defence weapon, this thing is HEAVY and metal). listed at $440, you can see how much lower you can get it for,

Also try 2nd hand. they have 10 year warranty, and will honour it. https://au.webuy.com/search?stext=rode One of the rode NT's seems like itll go fine.

but what you are asking for is generally the tradeoff. close to mic and rejecting of other sounds, or away from mic and picking up all sounds. but if you dont need perfect background noise removal and can run NVIDIA noise supperssion a condensor should be good. The shotgun is kind of the middle one, where it is sensible but directed at a point.

                  hope that helps :))

                  • @StorminNorman: Unfortunately my work laptop doesn't have nvidia 😅

                    Thanks for your detailed review.

I too have been eyeing Rode products for a while.

What do you think of this one?
                    https://www.camera-warehouse.com.au/rode-videomic-go-ii-shot…

Looks like it can be use as a podcasting microphone as well.

@meong: I reckon that sounds like what you've been leaning towards. I've never used a boom mic. Have a youtube session looking up about them- cause they're deffo a thing and people with more experience will know.

But that looks like a good price for the mic and it seems to match what you were looking for :)
