Fee Free Card to Withdraw Money from ATM Overseas?

Hi all, haven't been travelling overseas for a while.

Used to have Citibank Plus account purely to use for overseas ATM withdrawals but unfortunately, it's not an option now. What other cards could you recommend using in Singapore and Malaysia for ATM withdrawal?

FYI, I'll be using my Bankwest Qantas World credit card for spending.

Thanks!

UP? I think you might need to do 5 transactions before you go

5 transactions is only for savings, unlike ING

Used to have Citibank Plus account

Would have been a smart move to have kept it, as NAB equivalent still offers this very feature.

    • Exatctly. Not sure why people rush to dump it

    • I didn't cancel it, they just closed my account. I actually purposely left $2 inside, but still get closed down. What's the nab equivalent? I do have nab loan, so probably easier to get

      • Called nab, sadly citi didn't migrate my acc across to nab.. Probably due to no usage… Shame.. It was such a good perk.

        • Then what's happened to your $2? It has to have gone somewhere.

Did you try the supposed 'dedicated' Citi > NAB team? 1300135777

          • @DogGunn: Didn't know there's dedicated number. I shall try that

        • Mine got migrated (even with zero balances), got a new card and all, but still subsequently got cancelled out of the blue.

Macquarie: great app, good rates and you can earn a little bit of internet on your transaction account (or a lot on the linked savings)

Unlike ING or Wise there is no limit on free withdrawals or hoops to jump through

    • Awesome! Just remember I have Macquarie acc from years ago.. I guess just deposited money inside, and withdraw as usual?

      • Yeah, set up PayID with one of your emails and it will be instant

        • It seems there's only option to setup payid with mobile in the app? Did you have to call?

          • @Lancerx: Upon reflection I have that one linked to my mobile and my NAB & ME Bank accounts with my email. Sorry.

          Don't worry about PayID.
Just transfer to your Macquarie Transaction account BSB and account number.

Will be via Osko and immediate from most banks (apart from the first transfer which may be delayed for security purposes).

And make sure you test out the Macquarie debit card before leaving. Try taking $20 out at a local ATM to make sure your PIN etc works.

Oh. And also have the Macquarie banking app and Macquarie authenticator app on your phone and working if possible.

          • @pencilman: Or just open the Savings Account with Macquarie - together with your Trans account. Transfer as much fund you needed before travel to the sv account, and move to trans acc when required.

The interest in Savings account is quite competitive so you wouldn't lose out much.

you can earn a little bit of internet on your transaction account

I've always wanted to earn a few kilobytes of internet!

  • Up card for a debit card is one of the best I have found. And if you use an Apple Watch it has a sort of cool watch complication.

  • Did someone hurt your fee fees?

    • Thanks for pointing my typo lol.. It was late to be fair haha

You probably know that these ATM withdrawal fee free are only free of fee from your financial institution, the ATM owner can still charge a fee which you will have to pay and it can be quite hefty. I saw one that was €4.95 per transaction in Italy last week, this is passed on directly by Up . So if you withdraw only a small amount of cash it works out to be a big percentage slug. Like in Australia, bank ATMs seem to have lower fees than the stand alone ATMs

    • Yea I do know that, and I probably only withdraw one or twice in big amount. The whole holding big amount of cash around in Asia is kinda scary though..

  • HSBC - completely fee free withdrawals at HSBC ATMs over there

Too hard to setup acc with HSBC.. One of the worst bank I dealt with..

      • Agreed. Wouldn’t bothered with HSBC card when travelling overseas when there are much better options out there - Macquarie, Ubsnk, UpBank etc. I only use them locally for 2% cashback.

        • When visiting countries where they have a presence, no ATM fees (by the ATM operator) makes it superior to the other fee free options esp when you are not looking to withdraw a large amount of cash. I don't use it in any other countries.

  • Ubank

    And NAB (old Citibank plus)

Used Macquarie Debit card and UBank debit card in last few weeks to get money out of Maybank ATM in Malaysia with no ATM or foreign transaction fees.

Selected credit withdrawal on the ATM and declined offer of currency exchange to AUD from MYR.

    • Does Macquarie use Mastercard rate for the FX conversion?

      • They've explained here
