Seems like a decent deal if you’re after Sony a7cii with a small zoom 24-50mm.

following the Black Friday deals, this seems good as deal still. Still have few days until Sony cash back ends.

      they think they are Leica

      • errr this price is not even close to get a leica Summicron 50mm f2 lens, let alone a proper leica body.

You can get a used summicron ASPH for this price, with like 1k left over lol.

          proper leica body.

Granted if you don't mind used, Leica SL Type 601 is about 2.5k~ now, Q1 is about 3k or maybe a bit below

I really wanted it as a replacement for the RX100-M* line. But…:

The lens coming with it is a waste of money, add 1k for a decent G-Sony.
The video is not as stabilized as Gopro 8+ or from gimbal.
It still going to overheat after 15+ min of 4k videos.
    No flashlight
Add any non-pancake lens and it's not a pocket camera anymore.

Unfortunately, expensive cellphones are cheaper, and make good enough videos and photos for everyday use.

24-50 2.8 is a G lens and great for travelling. It's not the kit lens that many comes with.

      • -5

This lens and body are about 1kg combined. I don't know what is not great for travelling if this is. Even with a strap anywhere and without any other lens, this is 5 times weight and size of an average cellphone that will make comparable if not better videos, and in many cases comparable stills.

        • an average cellphone that will make comparable if not better videos, and in many cases comparable stills.

What mobile phone specifically? I ask because my A7III (and even 1st-gen A7) takes better-looking pictures and videos than my Pixel 8, especially in colour depth and contrasts.

          • @ddhar: Xiaomi Mi*T Pro line. I can't speak about the colours without professional monitor properly calibrated. From my human eye it's about the same. My point is not how many stops in each spec we get on paper, my point is that specifically for travel the main specs are weight and dimensions, which with 5 times difference are very hard to beat because there's nothing 5 times worse in a good cellphone camera.

            • @Ozzster: I just realized that in those cellphones often installed a top Sony sensor, which gets annually upgraded. So, at the end of the day we get even more recent technology from the same Sony.

For stills, especially when you combine the body with the actual lens sizes, I don't see much of an upgrade over the A7III.

    • +4

Autofocus and IBIS probably the most substantial differences for stills depending on your scenario. The new menu is a nice quality of life improvement and a few more MP does help a little more with cropping. A7III still great though and there have been some deals for the low 1k mark for it.

    • I just moved from A7III to A7CR.

There are some major advantages but not worth the premium necessarily, unless you know what you are getting.
I have never wore my A7iii on the neck, even with small primes, but I wore my A7CR with a 24 2.8mm whole day without issue.
And another major advantages is without the EVF hump, it fits into a lot more bags and camera cube.

I do travel and general street photography, it's a massive improvement especially with the flip screen. (though it's not as good for street)

      • Is that the super compact 24 f2.8 G ? I run a 50 f1.2 on my a7cr but wouldn’t mind a light compact setup when image quality isn’t the priority

  • the C cant not replace any normal alpha line in terms of ergo(size/shape). if you say it is not much smaller, well, the mirror-less isnt that much smaller to DSLR either if you have to say that. It is noticeable smaller.

the problem is the price. even at 2500$ right now, the Cii still not a decent buy consider SONY deliberately left out the dual-card, joystick, and still left it with a very very average EVF(almost outdated compare to any camera from other brand), and even a much worse LCD screen, which is going to be the main form of display you gonna be using on this camera since the EVF is just to tiny and awkward. But ofc sony doesnt want to eat into the normal alpha line, understandable, well then, it has to be cheaper. sub 2000$ before next big releases.

    • Very true. This is a year old camera that was on par with the A7IV gen. The Sony A7V will be on market between January and March 2025. Then we should expect CIII and discounts for CII.

      • A7V has been recently rumoured to have the new 44MP sensor. I think it is a happy medium between it and the A7R line. Higher resolution for cropping and still reasonably good noise performance.

I’d wait for that in case anyone has GAS.
