Where to Eat in Melbourne?

We are holidaying in Melbourne.

Where are some good pub meal/ restaurant dinner specials? I know the OzBargain locals would know where the good food nights are.

We used to eat $5 pizza’s at Republica in St Kilda on Mondays, but now they are $20, so something like that. We have kids so Kids Menus or ‘Kids Eat Free’ will help too. City and surrounding suburbs preferred.

Thank you in advance 😀

If you are looking for value, their’s this app - EatClub, use a random referral code and setup an account on it.

        • +2

Yep, agree with that. They've signed up loads of great places on there and on the weekdays the discounts can be quite steep.

@neil: Tried EatClub. It’s amazing, thanks

Plenty of eating options in Melbourne
Always has been as Melbourne is famous for this.

OP should explore the local pubs and restaurants

I think you might be confused. MS Paint is not the OP and is not looking for advice on eating options in Melbourne.

Question I would ask, where to not eat in Melbourne?

    • +2

Some touristy areas are best to avoid unless you have a recommendation for an individual place. Similar advice for anyone travelling to any new city.

      I'd say some of

      • Lygon Street, Carlton. Specifically the Italian tourist places. Usually they'll have spriukers outside. The nearby streets have some of the best pizzas/Italian like DOC.
      • Swanston Street. Some great places (Asian) but also some not so great closer to Fed Square. e.g. any place that has pizza/whatever sitting in a warmer at the window.

Too difficult now for a crappy food place to get by with people looking at reviews, IG etc.

    lol

  • Supernormal

    • +3

I love Supernormal (and Gimlet), but I don't think this is what OP had in mind

      • +2

Yeah this is absolutely not it, haha.

My Melbourne favourites are: Embla, Gimlet, Supernormal, Tipo 00, Bar Liberty, Cookie and 1800 Lasagne.

OP, if you’re up for a bit of adventure and aren’t strictly bargain hunting you can try Nico’s sandwiches for lunch.

        • Those sandwiches are delicious but the queues can be large.

      • Gimlet does a $28 cheese burger after 10pm. You do have to book.

        • Still not what the OP is after; most parents would baulk at paying $28 for a cheeseburger. Plus they have kids; having them eat at 10:30 on a Friday or Saturday night?

You don't have to book; they take walk-ins, however it is easier to book.

Fortress in the city has Parma/Parmi on Tuesday. $25 including a pint. It is a good one too, not one where you are thinking this is fairly ordinary.
The Heart of Carlton is a cafe where all the food and drinks are $5 or less.

    • This. Thank you

All $10-15 or less for a feed:

    Crossways, City

    Seoul Toast Bong, City
    Shanghai Village Dumplings, City

Don Don, CBD, Footscray & South Melbourne
I Love Pho, CBD & Richmond
    Very Good Falafel, Brunswick
    A1 Bakery, Brunswick & Fitzroy

    • Thanks. What are your favourites?

    • I had to google whether "Very Good Falafel" was legit the name of the shop.
It is and I am quite amused by it.

I've been there multiple times. Can confirm the name is accurate. Their food is excellent

Check out https://eatdrinkcheap.com.au/ for daily pub specials around different suburbs. I find steak nights to be generally pretty good value.

There are a lot of Parmas and steak night specials around earlier in the week. Look for ones with drinks or tie in with happy hours.

  • Young and Jacksons. It's a long time since we went there and the food may or may not be good now, but you'll get to see Chloe (famous artistic nude painting).

Just head on over to macca's or hungry Jack's

    • The Maccas at Smith Street Collingwood is next to their Melbourne Corporate Office. Things seem to run a bit tighter there.
