Can anyone compare this to the TCL C755 (which now comes with full array lighting)?

    • +2

      or c855, gaming wise.

I checked online and this does seem to miss the oled/mini led features but seems to be just as popular in its own price range so curious to see what aussies think

    • I've had my TCL c755 for less than a week. Coming from a plasma HD tv, I have no major complaints so far.

I turned off the motion enhancing setting - it's not for me. We notice it glitches sometimes and it's distracting.

I also bought it from appliances online. They price matched, delivery was free and I got it the next day! Amazing service.

  • Is that an ATL for the 75? I think I paid close to that 6 months ago.

    • Not sure about the 75, but for the 65 it's roughly on par with the best I've seen.
ATL I think if you can get some extra deals with price matching.

Is full array led = mini LED?

    • +1

      No

      • +1

        Which ones better?

        • +8

Here's a comparison between Full Array LED and Mini LED:

          Full Array LED:
          - Pros:
          - Better contrast control compared to edge-lit LEDs due to local dimming zones.
          - More uniform brightness across the screen.
          - Cons:
          - Fewer dimming zones can lead to blooming (light halo around bright objects on dark backgrounds) compared to Mini LED.
          - Bulkier design due to the placement of LEDs behind the entire screen.

          Mini LED:
          - Pros:
          - Offers more local dimming zones because Mini LEDs are smaller and more can fit behind the screen, leading to better control over contrast, less blooming, and higher peak brightness.
          - Can achieve deeper blacks and more vibrant colors.
          - The technology allows for thinner displays while maintaining or improving upon the performance of traditional Full Array LED.
          - Cons:
          - Generally more expensive due to the complexity of manufacturing.
          - The technology is newer, so availability in mid-range models might be limited.

          Which is Better?
          - Performance: Mini LED generally provides superior performance in terms of contrast, brightness, and color accuracy due to the higher number of dimming zones.
          - Cost vs. Performance: If budget is a concern, Full Array LED can still offer a very good viewing experience but with less contrast control.
          - Future Proofing: Mini LED is seen as a step towards OLED in terms of picture quality but with the benefits of LED technology like higher brightness and longevity.

In summary, Mini LED is typically better for those prioritizing image quality, but Full Array LED remains a strong contender for its balance between cost and performance. The choice depends on your specific needs, budget, and how much you value the incremental improvements that Mini LED offers.

        • +5

They both mean that the TV backlight comes from a bunch of LEDs behind the screen, as opposed to the older method of edge-lit where the lights are all around the edges.

Mini-LED generally means there are more LEDs packed closer together.

You can't say based solely on full array vs mini-led which TV is better.

In theory, mini-LED is better, but there are other factors involved, like local dimming algorithms, so you can't just say that all mini LED is better than all full array.
For example a low end mini LED may not be better than a high end full array, which makes comparing across brands, or even different levels within a single brand, is not as straight forward as you might think.

There are also other factors outside of local dimming, like motion handling, colour reproduction, etc. to consider when buying a TV, and which ones mean the most to you.

          • @rooboo: Yep, it's a real cluster-fk and I would hate to be someone in the market for a TV with NFI about all the different types of tech.

          • @rooboo: Which is better for reduced blooming? I have about 500 dimming zones and I hate the blooming so much on my hisense

    • No, traditional LED can also have FALD. They're simply smaller in size to allow for better black uniformity.

  • How does this compare to LG C4?

    • +7

There are plenty of reviews on websites and YouTube.
A lot of it is presonal preference and budget so you have to decide for yourself which one is better for you.
On paper the C4 is probably the better TV, but they're not in the same price range you you have to weight that up.

    • C4 is better its OLED with very few possible screen issues. Whereas LED can have various different issues. The C4 is also a beast in terms of gaming performance etc..

  • -4

There's no chance you'd even consider this over the C755 or C855 based on the rtings reviews..

    • +6

I disagree, but everyone has their own preferences.

      • +1

Why would you choose this over a C855?

        • +2

Better motion handling and upscaling as far as I'm aware. This is important to me.

The main complaints people have about the Sony (viewing angle & reflections) don't matter to me for my use case.
I also think that its blooming is acceptable for me, with Sony's tradeoff of not risking over-dimming or black crush due to blooming mitigations.

I've had very good luck with Sony products in the past, although I'm not against TCL in any way. The C855 was in my shortlist and I think it seems great.

Also, this is cheaper currently. Not by too much but price is a concern for me since I likely won't be keeping this TV long term and I want minimal waste. Related is resale value, which I am guessing is better with the Sony (not provable at this stage obviously).

          • @rooboo: Why oh why doesn't Sony go back to their excellent anti-reflection LCD coatings of 2010?

I have a Sony EX500 from 2010 still going strong that has low reflections and deep black panel, which I am prepared to sacrifice a little maximum brightness for those advantages.

          • -3

@rooboo: You could just say you are a Sony fan and be done with it.

Is resale value really something people think about with TVs these days? People were complaining about two year old OLEDs at excellent prices on a deal a week or so ago. Hardly think anyone is going to want a used 5-10 year old Sony in 2030-2035.

      • -7

Preference doesn't mean it's better, just means you prefer the Sony TV over the vastly superior TCL C855.

        • +13

Of course. Your preference doesn't mean the TCL is better either. It just means you prefer the TCL.
          They're both excellent TVs reallly.

Even if you take the measure of RTings X90L vs QM7 (which falls somewhere between the C755 and the C855 based on specs), the TCL doesn't win every category.
The TCL wins some and the Sony others.
QM8 is better but negligibly, not vastly. Also QM8 has better specs than C855.

So you take your preferences for which aspects are more important to you and you choose which one is better for you.

For you it's the TCL, for me it's the Sony.

I'm not saying either is objectively better (I think the C855 is good, and it was in my shortlist), just that I prefer the Sony for my current needs, and that's taking into account RTings reviews and the reviews of at least a dozen other sources, and viewing the TVs in store.

I don't care about the extra brightness TCL has. There are tradeoffs on both sides in relation to blooming, but from my viewing angle, with my brightness settings Sony's blooming is not a concern for me.
The only negatives for the Sony that I might care about are viewing angle and reflections, and neither of those will be issues for my use case.

I do care about motion handling and upscaling, which most (maybe all) reviews say the Sony handles better.

I also care to some extent about resale value as I will likely have to sell it in the not too distant future due to moving overseas. But that's a gamble too since the X90L is already an older model.

Anyway, your opinions don't matter to me and mine shouldn't matter to you.

    • +5

There's no chance I'm ever buying a TCL/Hisense/etc again. Learned my lesson once

      • what happened?

      • Why? My Hisense 55Q8 4K Ultra HD ULED 2020 is still going strong without an issue

        • I have a 65Q8 and overall i'd say it's been great value for what I paid, but lately i get random screen freeze (at least once per week) and remote becomes unresponsive.. The only way to solve it is by switching off/on at powerpoint..

        • Same, I kinda wish it would brick itself so I could justify a bigger mini-LED, but it's a perfectly good TV.

Especially since I had a samsung before it that has gone through two new panels (fortunately under warranty)

      • 100%. We've had a few Hisense and tcls - all have had issues under 5 years. As much as the reviews and raving on ozb tell me to get mini leds. Nope.

    • +2

This is one of the better tv out there.
It’s more than the sums of ‘rtings’

    • +1

You clearly know nothing about TVs 😂

    • +6

There's no chance you'd even consider this over the C755 or C855 based on the rtings reviews..

      Nope

If you're upgrading from a budget Chinese FFalcon or Hisense, a TCL does look good

But if you're side-grading from a Japanese or Korean TV, the most important visual elements of a TV that cannot be brute forced - colour science, colour accuracy, motion handling, SD/HD upscaling quality - are all lacking on TCL

Even in Vincent's glowing review of the C855, he explains this reality at the end of the video

Also, this 2023 X90L still runs a better MTK chipset than the C855 and this is even before the superior BRAVIA XR image processing on the Sony

    • +4

The TVs reviewed on rtings are North American/European versions, not APAC. Nobody knows what TCL and Hisense are selling here.

  • I wonder if Sony will price beat when this is already out for delivery for me?

    • They will price match, yes and should raise a partial refund request for you, to refund the price difference.

  • ETA from 13th Feb.

    • Yep. ETA differs slightly depending on size but still Feb.
Better off price matching somewhere with stock.

  • I'm torn between this or the samsung frame tv for the Matt screen. Not for the main tv (we have a g1).

    • +4

There is no comparison. This every day of the week…!!!!!!!!! One of the best TV's on the market unless you after an OLED. Samsung TV's are pure trash now and rely on marketing.

    • Samsung is trash do not do it. Cheaply made and unreliable.

  • Once the item is in the cart at Sony, where does one find the price match button?

    • +1

Price match is on the product page. Not sure if you can do from the cart.

  • An extra $200 be real good 0n 55 " . Maybe later this year ?

  • +1

I have this TV in 75 inch. You can't go wrong at this price - I paid about $2.2K delivered in Novmber 2023. It's not an OLED or a mini-LED, but all I know is that it to my eyes it looks great.

    • +1

It's not an OLED or a mini-LED, but all I know is that it to my eyes it looks great.

      100% feel the same way

I have this in 75 inch, and the prior X90F model in 65 inch.

Somehow I can make my 30fps switch games (TotK, Astral chain, Xenoblade 3, amongst others) FEEL and APPEAR smooth and fluid like 60fps.

      • What settings?

        • +1

By default the animation setting (under picture setting) enables the motion flow to ‘smooth’

          Alternative

Go to Picture setting > advance setting > motion > motion flow > smooth.

Much better (at least for me) playing TotK and BotW with this on. Smooth and judder free whilst still being clear.

Adjust the motion smoothness according to your taste.

Just asked for a price match on this through sonys website for the 75” model, wish me luck!

    • +1

Let us know how it goes

      • +1

They approved mine for the 65"

      • +1

price match was just approved, $1951 for the 75”.

  • +2

Good prices but be aware with price match:

Cash rewards Sony store 10% cash back.

Recent CR T&Cs exclude discounted price from store listed price. This was discussed in several previous Sony posts.

Sony store 5% new user signup.

When Sony price match, they disable the field for discount code.

    • Could you do an auto price match on good guys and have the 3% cashback?

      • Yes works fine on 2 transactions I made last month, both approved and in the bank now.
Those were done with the auto price beat.

        • I recall seeing previous comments saying same for TGG auto price match.

    • I just used my 5% welcome discount and it worked

      • Did you have Sony price match as well, because the discount code field is usually disabled every time
I got price match in recent months?

        • Just ordered the 65" for $1355 after price match on Sony online, even though appliances online were OOS. Sony gave an extra $50 off and I stacked it with the 5% Welcome Sony discount.

  • Great price for the 85”. I have had mine for 4 months. Couldn’t be happier. Moved from a 100” 4k Epson projector 9400

  • This or or spend a bit more and wait for a good deal on Bravia 7?

  • So this 65" would be on par with TCL 65" C745 right? As that is not Mini led. Genuine question

I'm looking for a new tv for my parents (coming from a 10+ year old tv) and I do like Sony as a brand but the TCL 65" C745 is cheaper / budget-friendly from them

    • +1

The C755 is cheaper at the moment and Mini LED so wouldn't even consider the 745.

It depends what your parents watch, the Sony is supposedly much better at upscaling free to air.

See LeonC's comment below, I have the same thoughts and think I'll take the Sony over the C755 or C855.

  • JB Online refused to price match.

    • I just got a price match at JB's on the 85".

  • +1

I chose this one over TCL C855 for the following reasons:
    - Motion blur is better on the Sony. TCL C855 demo's I've seen where amazing, but watching actual content you notice the motion blur more (especially FTA live sports)
    - TCL C855 have this mirror like finish on the glass, so it's super reflective, which isn't good in a room with a lot of downlights or direct sunlight (imo)
    - I've read mixed things about Google TV longevity on TCL, so I preferred the Sony hardware (irrelevant if you use a third party device like ATV)

I would have chosen the TCL over this one because:
    - Colours are better on the TCL, they are more vibrant and "full". Some people may not like that (i.e. doesn't look real) but in my eyes it's beautiful
    - TCL has a much better warranty (3 vs 1)
    - TCL costs less usually
    - Sony because of the Full Array setup has shadowing on the corners, which is noticeable on bright screens (like the intro of Bluey), TCL does not
    - Screen panel technology is newer and better

Personally I think neither is the bad choice here, and anyone saying otherwise can go back to 2006 and join the Xbox 360 vs PS3 wars.

  • +3

$100 off with Ebay Plus, $1851 for 75inch

    • I didn't expect to be able to anyway, but JB couldn't price match the $100 coupon discounted price, only 1951

  • Cashrewards is offering 10% cashback of Sony. Will that work ?

    • It tracked for me but not expecting it to be approved judging by previous comments.

      • Fingers crossed.

  • No mention here of the C845 ?

    • +1

Like the C855, they're both Mini LED. Mini LED is going to display much better black uniformity than traditional LED.

  • +1

Decent price, but it's $1477 not $1447 as the title suggests

  • +3

Just ordered the 65" for $1355 after price match on Sony online, even though appliances online were OOS. Sony gave an extra $50 off and I stacked it with the 5% Welcome Sony discount.

    • How did they justify giving you an extra $50 off before you used the 5% discount?

      • +1

Gave me the option of offer 1 - additional discount or offer 2 - another remote worth over $60

        • +1

Best they can offer me is $20 additional discount or the remote!
As I already had the 5% loaded up on the page perhaps that's why I didn't get the full fifty :(

          • @cristobaljamesy: Did you guys do it through the online chat? Did mine via email and wasn't offered a remote or any extra discount. 5% welcome code still worked though so $1400 ish for the 65"

            • +2

@haych: Online chat. Still excellent price!

            • +1

@haych: Correct, couldn't find the chat till it popped up though asking if I wanted a price match..

    • +1

Damn, I could only get an extra $20 off. Plus 5% to $1384.15 for the X90L 65". Good price imo.

    • I got offered- either $20 or free remote. With the free remote I noticed, you could increase the quantity and the price would still be zero, who needs more remotes eh ?

    • How did you use the 5% discount? My cart has disabled coupon codes

  • Price matched with the TGG and even got free delivery.
After waiting on the my order for TCL C855 85" and changes in timeline, I gave up and got this instead. Would have loved to have Bravia 7 but that again is on backorder.

  • Price matched the 85’’ with JB, including free delivery. Called the number on their website. Initially, both TGG and JB refused when I tried in-store.

    • If they are just price matching, is there any reason not to order through Appliances Online directly, avoiding the hassle of requesting a price match and delivery? The only exception being if stock is ready for immediate delivery at JB or The Good Guys?

      • Yeah, these stores have stock for immediate delivery, with Appliances Online you’ll have to wait till Feb.

  • Was considering this model as another upgrade, but the drawback is still the 2/4 'fast' HDMI ports. Next years models are purported to have 4, so you can finally have eARC and 2 gaming consoles.
