You can always save money from these charlatans and achieve the same mental clarity by reading kitty litter tea leaves.

Respected secular historian Tom Holland (same name but different to Spiderman actor) would disagree.
"Without Christian faith, ultimately what is the underpinning for [our liberal values]?"

      • Christianity has been the basis of much change; we owe the people who practiced it for introducing kindness into systems and institutions.

But it’s a bygone mass delusion. We know beyond gods & magic today, we don’t need its mythology and miscalculations; they are primitive and unwise.

Today many, perhaps most, Christians aren’t followers of Christ, they’re fans. They’re into him for the magic powers and all the smite, and the insurance that heaven will undo their sins with a magical afterlife, which is terribly convenient.

The trick is to move forward with grace & kindness, new traditions and community building. What could be the catalyst I’m not yet sure, I would hope it would be Earth itself, the environment, alas… not looking good.

The question isn’t whether Christianity helped underpin liberal values (it did), it’s that, given Christianity has become so corrupted and useless as a tool of humanity today, what will be the underpinning of tomorrow’s values?

That’s the challenge we face; not mainlining more delusion.

        • Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I won't be able to answer fully, but would just say that what you call a "bygone mass delusion" has some solid historical evidence especially surrounding the New Testament as a source.
If you've never read it, Luke's biography of Jesus takes 1.5 hours to read and it may surprise you.

The question isn’t whether Christianity helped underpin liberal values

The real question is whether it's true. If it is, everything changes.

          • @Salvsum: And if it’s not, no Christian loses anything in the end. But that’s not why I follow Jesus. I am convinced, based on the historical evidence and logic + faith + witnessing Christian promises (like prayer, church, Christian values, etc) play out in my life, that God is real, He loves us and that Jesus is risen

Crossway is an excellent resource for those seeking Christian content.

I can recommend the ESV Commentaries for those looking to dig deeper into the bible.

  • Is there an app to access this or is it just via web browser? If there is an app, how is the functionality?

    • You just download a EPUB or PDF. So any ebook reader will work.
